Wow, what a display from the lads tonight. And with a somewhat makeshift team no less. Sean Longstaff was outstanding playing as a number 10 like he did in win at Oxford in the FA Cup. It’s a real shame he was forced off in the first half with what we hope is not a serious injury.
Dwight Gayle and Joelinton were also thorns in Bournemouth’s side with Gayle getting his second goal since the league resumed. Joelinton looked bright early on before being taken off for Isaac Hayden as Bruce tried to preserve the lead.
The midfield duo of Jonjo Shelvey and Nabil Bentaleb were terrific as they bossed the game. Bentaleb had his best outing as a Magpie. Shelvey had a terrific assist on Lazaro’s goal.
Martin Dubravka and the defenders did their part as they came ever so close to capturing another clean sheet. However, a lapse of concentration in the closing minutes allowed Bournemouth to get a consolation goal through Dan Gosling.
However, Allan Saint-Maximin may have topped them all with his display. It was a risk to play him from the start but it paid off big time.
The Frenchman put in another star turn and added three assists to bring his season total to seven to go with his three goals. What a signing he’s turned out to be.
