Bruce Reveals Two Magpies Injured In Win At Bournemouth

Yesterday’s 4-1 thrashing of Bournemouth was just what many Newcastle fans needed after our tepid departure from the FA Cup on Sunday. The lads scored four terrific goals and came ever so close to bagging a couple more.

It was the best the lads have played all season, and it was with somewhat of a makeshift squad. However, from front to back, the whole team played their part.

Unfortunately, there were two injuries, and the one to Sean Longstaff looks like it’ll keep him out for a bit. It’s a massive blow to young Sean, who was stellar playing in the number 10 role.

Javier Manquillo, our fill-in left-back, also suffered what Bruce calls a strain. Hopefully, he’s only suffered a knock and won’t miss too much time.

This is what Bruce had to say about the injuries suffered yesterday.

This should not have too big of an impact on our match at West Ham. Longstaff was in to give Miguel Almiron a break, so Miggy should be ready to go on Sunday. The Paraguayan even bagged his seventh goal yesterday in relief duty.

As far as Manquillo goes, Emil Krafth was in at right-back and was excellent yesterday. Javier filled in for Danny Rose, who also was rested. So if the Spaniard is unable to go on Sunday, Krafth has likely earned himself another start with Danny Rose back on the left.

Just a shame with Sean tho. Looked really lively chasing balls putting himself on the line and getting a goal then injury forces him off.

Rose would be starting LB at west Ham anyway, so if Kraft can play the same again Manq won’t be a huge miss.

It’s not so much about being wrong about a player
It’s realising the PL is a major step up for players coming
in from foreign leagues and they have to be given time to
    adjust
Jail was on Emil Krafth’s case after the Norwich game
when it was his first game in the PL and he clearly wasn’t a Wingback

Well Krafth and Bentaleb are back in the maybe bracket after I’ve wrote them both off.

Was really disappointed in Bentaleb after being excited about his arrival but he showed his class last night.

Bruce has done fantastic, considering Rafa was God with most up here. Seems like all the players like playing for him. Huge difference in attitude from previous seasons.

A great performance last night and I’m still buzzing. However I always think you have to try and not get too carried away. Yes Bentaleb and Krafth probably had their best games for us but then I don’t think we had any poor performances last night – however the real test comes when we are not dominating a game – can they still do it then?

Incidentally I like Eddie Howe and I hope Bournemouth improve now we’ve played them however something doesn’t look quite right – maybe he has lost the dressing room?

Jib from earlier, I actually have a funny feeling he will stick with the 433 even against city. We have nothing to loose now by setting up against them like we did in the cup, and we know it doesnt work anyways.

If he treats the City game as a gimme and lets the lads off the leash
it could end up a cracker

IrishRob – We were kind of in a 433 second half against city in the cup and we played much better. I suppose most will say it was 451 or 4231 but i think its a fairly flowing formation, very easy to vary

On Bruce, I think he’s handled the transition in the team very well indeed. He’s taken a Rafa-built solid defensive team playing on the back foot and transformed them over the course of the season into a team playing with confidence on the front foot with a still-solid looking defense.

He’s also achieved this with no pre-season to speak of and without being able to influence the Summer recruitment drive.

There have been one or two mis-steps along the way, notably trying to transition to four at the back too quickly / too soon at Norwich, but he realised that he’d made a mistake and rolled things back until the lads were ready and comfortable.

All in all, with the Cup run thrown in, it’s been a very satisfactory season. We just need to keep it up to the end now.

That’s not to disparage Rafa and the job he did here, for which I’ll always revere him, before anybody jumps down my throat. I was hoping to see Rafa carry on and develop the team the same way over time, which I’m sure he would have done.

On Longstaff, I’ve always said if he was pushed further up the pitch or given license to roam there we’d see the true worth of him, he’s an excellent prospect and always has been, however a defensive midfielder he’s not.

I think his muscle injury last night was actually caused by the knock he took when he was clattered robbing the ball ahead of Gayle’s goal. He took a kick to the left hamstring and it looked like that was the one that popped when he sprinted later on.

There’s people on here with proper sports physio knowledge who will tell me if that’s possible or not.

If Bruce keeps them winning I could genuinely see a scenario where the Saudis give him a half a season at least. I mean you cant deny they like playing for him, that has to count for a lot.

I just have a sneaky suspicion results wont go as easily his way come the autumn/winter.

There is also no denying it anymore that they are playing far better without our crowd, you can only put it down to the pressure the crowd my be putting on the players psychologically, because the City game aside we havent looked this good all season, they look very relaxed.

Northumbrian, sorry but it’s a nothing story – MBS was never going to be a director of NUFC and was therefore never going to be subject to the F&P test.

Just wish they’d get a move on and announce the bl00dy thing….

Great to see the lads knock it around and score a few goals last night. They actually looked like they were enjoying themselves.

St Max is just getting betting with every game. His confidence levels and composure are improving and his final ball is far more refined now. This kid is a special talent.

I know there is no scenario where Rafa gets no credit in your vocabulary. He was meant to be a world class coach, which would suggest he had many ways of coaching.
He had one style of coaching
He had one style of managing
Everything else was someone else’s fault.

Bruce is a breath of fresh air

The current SJP lot lack patience. It’s resentment at Ashley deep down but it ends up being taken out on individuals. Definitely playing with more pizazz but we’ve also secured safety early for the first time in a while which is part of it. Lazaro is mint – get him signed.
