ESPN is reporting that USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie is open to a move away from Schalke this summer with German outlet Bild naming Newcastle as a possible destination.
The ESPN report has a comment from Schalke director Jochen Schneider in which he says a move away for McKennie ‘cannot be ruled out.’
However, it is Bild that says the 21-year-old dreams of playing in the Premier League with Newcastle and Everton listed as admirers.
McKennie (shown above) joined Schalke from the Dallas Academy, he was born in Texas, in 2017 on a free transfer. He’s since made 91 appearances for the Bundesliga club, which is managed by former United States international and Huddersfield boss David Wagner.
While he’s usually deployed as a central midfielder, the versatile American often is asked to fill in at center-back or even on the right side of midfield.
McKennie has been a full US international since 2017 and has 19 caps with 6 goals. He’s got four years to run on his contract and is valued at just over £20m by Schalke.
The midfielder has bags of experience at such a young age, he turns 22 in August. He would be a decent addition to Newcastle’s midfield this summer at an equitable price.

Comment #1Please just get the takeover done so
I can actually believe these reports and dream of new players .
Because to me it’s all media nonsense.

Comment #2While I’m sure Weston McKennie is a fine footballer and probably worth £20M surely this is the sort of signing NUFC would make if Ashley were staying ?

Comment #4All nonsense anyways because if we have to start believing these reports we have to believe we will have Bale, Mbappe and Cavani as our 3 next season…..

Comment #12Yes, linked with Ashley type signings, and seemingly truly good young players, which of course has too rarely been the case.
I think we are actually gradually building a decent squad. It’s as if right at the very death, Ashley has finally and pointlessly started to almost twig.
It is of course too little too late.
He’ll surely come to deeply regret his failed ownership of Newcastle United, one of the truly great English football clubs.

Comment #18Agree Nicky, Ashley was at his worst years ago. We had started to sign decent players and spend a few quid. He was so stupid not to employ a decent DOF and get the basics right. We haven’t made any transfer messes except for Joel and that just seems fishy.

Story is that the name Berghaus evolved in a discussion over a few beers in the Crown Posada which was popular with LD staff.

So, please direct such comments as @13 to him otherwise you’ll be hauled in front of the Politbureau!

Comment #23City put down a marker for sure. We did OK second half against them. First half was like rafa’s first game, ridiculous blanket defence but maybe that’s the tactic by both managers, that it’s just too risky to try to front up for 90 mins.

Comment #29Leaked stories of no contract talks for Max and others is mischief making by the media, no doubt leaked via player Agents. The Longstaffs haven’t penned any new deals and keeping Carroll on the books for the rest of this extended season is at best prudent.
Talk that Poncettino has rejected Benfica might suggest that he is hoping for the top job in the Premier League.
New owners., new contracts, new beginning.
