We are still waiting for a definitive decision on 20-year-old Matty Longstaff and whether he will stay on Tyneside.
And it has again become a long, drawn-out saga at Newcastle.
We’ve had this kind of circus too many times over the last 13 years, with some good players.
The club offers the player a contract, and then stubbornly refuse to increase their offer,
It happens in the transfer window too.
It’s a reflection of the man at the top – Mike Ashley – and his stubborn and thrifty ways.
Hopefully, we will soon have new owners.
And if that eventually happens, we expect Matty to stay on Tyneside with his brother Sean, but probably be sent on loan to a top Championship club for next season.
Matty Longstaff – still undecided about staying at hometown club
In his press conference today for the tough game at Brighton on Monday night, the Newcastle manager has talked once again, about this potential star player of the future:
This is some of what Bruce said, as reported in the Shields Gazette today:
“For the last few weeks I’ve been answering on Matty Longstaff.”
” I think I’ve made my stance pretty clear – we’ve done everything we can to keep him here, it’s up to him now,”
“We think a lot of him and his progress was fantastic up until Christmas. Then it’s got into far too long with negotiations and football shut down for four months.”
“It’s up to Matty. We can only ask that question and see. In the next week or so, we’ll find out if he’s going to stay or if he’s going to move on.”
“Of course I’d be disappointed to see him go,”
“I put him in and his progress was fine up until Christmas. “
“He’s a young lad. I hope he stays, I’ve made that pretty obvious.”
This is simply Steve Bruce behaving himself on camera and toeing (yes, it’s toeing rather than towing) the party line.
If Bruce was in charge of the finances at the club, maybe he would be willing to match the £30K/week Matty’s reportedly been offered by Italian club Udinese.
We don’t even know if that’s true, but Matty also wants first-team game time.
And it really is about time the Premier League made their decision on the Amanda Staveley led takeover of the club
But we’ve monotonously been writing that line since late April!
What do you think?

Comment #4Not sure why you are hanging Bruce for “toeing the party line”. This kid is average and he can quite simple hit the road if he doesn’t fancy 30k playing for his home town club.
