Who Was Newcastle’s “Player Of The Season” – Plus A Look Back At Past Winners

The final league game of the season is over and we are into the summer transfer window.

And if we are to believe the news today, then Steve Bruce’s summer transfer budget has been halved to £35M my current owner Mike Ashley, plus whatever money he can get from players he sells this summer.

It was a strange and difficult season with the coronavirus pandemic, and since late March we have been anticipating new owners being approved by the Premier League.

But the Amanda Stavley consortium are still waiting for a decision from the Premier League, and it’s taken far too long and left Newcastle in limbo, once again.

Out first winner back in 2007-2008 – Senegal right-back Habib Beye

As a reminder of past winners since we started the blog back in April 2007, here first is a look back in time.

    Very rare repost
BSIB perpetuating the myth that we were relegation favourites, we weren’t.

    =8. Newcastle United (9/2)
    =8. AFC Bournemouth (9/2)
    =8. Southampton (9/2)

    5. Brighton & Hove Albion (2/1)
    4. Aston Villa (13/8)

    3. Burnley (7/4)
    2. Norwich City (10/11)
    1. Sheffield United (4/6)

We weren’t anywhere near favourites to go down.

I believe the gist for most was “relegation at worst, lower to mud table at best”

Sadly the latter part is being seen by some as a remarkable triumph and has exceeded expectations. How that has come about I don’t know but at the start of the season I think it was consensus that not going forward was a definite backward slide and that Ashley’s appointment of Bruce was designed to do just that.

Even in August after the turmoil of the summer.
    Sheffield United – 8/11
    Norwich City – 11/10
    Brighton – 13/8
    Burnley – 2/1
    Newcastle – 2/1

Whichever way the club tries to spin it, 13th for the season is not good enough.

The takeover will be used as an excuse for the continued lack of investment this summer, and we’ll be stuck with the same we had this year, minus the loan players and plus a couple of cheap options to fill in.

    Rinse and repeat.

Your verbosity hides a simple fact…

Unlike you I don’t spout prejudiced any-Bruce views just for the sake of it or to curry favour with the other Bruce haters and doom and gloom ‘relegation certainty’ brigade.

I am no Bruce lover as you would have it…

Just a fair minded fan who gives new managers and players the benefit of doubt to start with and then judges them on performance for NUFC not what they have achieved or not achieved in the past.

Considering he lost last seasons strike force and got AC and Jo in return, plus not having Diame replaced, Bruce has done far better in having us safe with games to spare than you and a host of other fans forecasted.

    And…

Don’t give me that he got ASM….

You knew that at the start of the season when your bile and negativity towards Bruce was at its height.

    Simple fact is….

Bruce proved you wrong and your fatuous arrogance can’t take it.

Bills son, previous thread. You are wrong on so many levels. I’m anti-Bruce appointment because he is a lacklustre championship manager who can be entrusted to not break the squad and do as he is told as a coach. The result is the competitive stagnation of this club. How are you saying that’s worth defending?

And as for predictions at the beginning of the Season, this thread is a a highly embarrassing spotlight on your rhetoric and misinformation. Keep it down before you do yourself an injury.

Give up with your spinning the facts…

You’ve missed your vocation as a weaver.

I’m not wrong on my assessment of Bruce this season on any level.

He’s no great manager but he has done a very decent job in difficult circumstances keeping us up.

There are plenty of independent professionals in the game who have said exactly that.

The likes of you who don’t give him an ounce of credit just shows you up as vindictive for the pure sake of it.

    Grow up man.

    BSIB,
We’ll have to see the results of martoon’s poll to verify that, it will be out soon.
As for AC, he could have put his foot down and said the lad is knackered, I need a fully fit striker to help bed in Joelinton, but he was never going to say that because part of the job description is to do as he’s told. Does anyone believe for a minute if Churnley hadn’t of given the green light to go for a cup he would have said no.

The worry for Newcastle next season is we are relying on a lot of players who pick up injuries to get us through:

Dummett always misses chunks of the season
Clark always gets an injury of some sort
Lejuene will he ever be the same player again?
Gayle gets into a groove starts to do well and then gets some kind of injury
Carroll pointless keeping him on another year he has done nothing since the restart teams can deal with the aerial threat these days
ASM well Bruce is going to keep rushing him back and overusing him so expect that he will get injured again
    Longstaff is always getting injured
Shelvey is always struggling for fitness
Lascalles never seems to get a chance to get back to full fitness either
Then you have Muto , Atsu , Schar, Yedlin who Bruce would rather not play

That’s a lot of the squad to go missing and we don’t have the quality to replace

    BSIB,
He never relegated us, there, I give Brucie credit for not relegating us. He took over a team bang on form with the 7th best defence in the division and a minus 6 GD. All but one of that defence is injured and we go in to next season near the bottom of the form league and the seventh worse defence. He signed off on the recruitment and like I said had ample opportunity to voice his concerns over an untested Brazillian kid given the number 9 shirt with no competition or support, instead he licked his lips at the thought, an unfortunate sight we’ve had to get used to. Rafa kept us in the league with that defence as a foundation to build on, Brucie seems to have broken it. We’ll soon get to see the extent of the marvellous job he’s let himself in for when Lee Churnley starts picking his own players.

For the final 19 games of the previous season (after Almiron signed) we picked up 27 points. Continuing that form would’ve seen us hit a total of 54 points.

Bruce managed to knock 10 points off that porojected total this season.

You say we lost Perez and Rondon and gained AC and Joe, but we also added ASM, Lazaro, Willems, Krafth, Rose and Bentaleb this year so Bruce had a lot more depth than we had before.

Performances are more of an indicator than results though. Bruce’s shortcomings as a manager have been obvious for much of the season, and when you look at how rarely we were the better side on the day, the results have flattered us somewhat.

Newcastle United FC is expected to start next season under its current owner, the takeover bid is expected to be completed. The source played down concerns that the lack of movement from the Premier League and the negative publicity around the takeover would make the Saudis think twice. “The decision making-process [leading to involvement in the sale] was very deliberate. They [the PIF] do not make knee-jerk decisions.”

At this point in time I wouldn’t be against having Watts, Murphy and Barlaser being allowed to stake a claim for a place in pre season within the squad!

Murphy has turned it around at Sheffield Wednesday and is looking like the player that we signed would take him over Atsu who just seems done here

Barlaser is an exciting player could he offer more than Bentaleb?

If Bruce doesn’t want Schar and he isn’t wanting to be here anymore should we move him on and replace with Watts to free up budget for other areas?

Jail’s point about ruining that base of the squad is the most damning. We did have a structure on which to build. We could actually see it, feel it going into this season we just needed one or two more players and we were going upward.

Bruce took the chassis and went demo derby with it. Aye he finished the course but look at it man – the squad is a mess of uncertainty and I reckon if Bruce stays around and we have a lacklustre window the heads will drop. Them you can take your relegation poll in February.

Regarding the takeover, just been thinking, it seems weeks ago that the PL replied/answered NUST but asked they kept it under wraps, NDA etc….., seems strange that nothing was leaked after all this time. I believe the PL will pass it probably 1 week or so before the transfer deadline ends so we can’t spend loads of cash quickly and upset the rest of the PL etc…
