Report: Only Two Teams Graded Higher Than Magpies – Steve Bruce Has Done As Well As Rafa

We think Steve Bruce did a commendable job last season in keeping Newcastle in the Premier League.

The Geordie manager also managed to keep us free of the relegation zone, so it was an easier season for Newcastle fans to handle.

There was less anxiety than in the previous two seasons.

Given the very low bar we set for Bruce at the start of the season, we thought we’d be struggling all season with relegation, Steve did very well.

And that’s what Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas thinks.

The former Scottish striker has graded the Premier League clubs and Steve and Newcastle get a respectable “B” grade.

Only Sheffield United (B+) and Liverpool (A+) got better grades than Newcastle for last season, which is surprising.

Steve Bruce – did well last season

This is what Charlie wrote in his Sky Sports review of the PL teams:

“Some Newcastle fans are questioning how dare we suggest Steve Bruce has done as good a job as Rafa Benitez, but come on guys, he has.”

“A lot of people didn’t want him there, didn’t like the style, but I think he’s been more attacking than Rafa.”

“Not as well-drilled defensively, but for what he had, and what he’s done, Allan Saint-Maximin’s been a good signing, Miguel Almiron has enjoyed himself, Joelinton’s been a bit of a disaster though.”

“He ended up playing a decent attacking style which Newcastle fans would, if they’re sitting over their beer in the stadium, say he did a good job but not as good as Rafa – you’d say really?”

“The position he finished in the league? There wasn’t even one bit of sweat on the brow about going down, which you got with Rafa.”

We finished in 13th place – about the same points and position as we finished the previous two seasons under the great Rafa Benitez.

[table “84” not found /]

Steve Bruce will not get the plaudits he deserves for last season, because as he is only too willing to tell you – he’s not everybody’s cup of tea.

But he kept us in the Premier League and out of relegation trouble and that enabled the takeover to go forward, so it was a job well done.

What do you think about Nicholas’ grade for Newcastle?

Charlie needs to lay off the booze during the day I think

Apart from 1 or 2 games we have been terrible the games have been more entertaining for the NEUTRAL because they have got more chances against us

What’s all this “B+” racket about?

That was a “D” of a season if ever I’ve seen one. Just about enough to avoid a fail.

I bought a car at Fawdingtons BMW the same day they were trying to talk Stephen Glass into buying a 6 series that had just come out. Not the most interesting claim to fame story. Better stick with my Mary Hopkin one 🙂

Bruce’s reign so far has been a combination of “just happy to be here” and “it’s the taking part that counts”.

I never expected to see our manager come away smiling from ear to ear after a draw with relegation candidates.

Talking about the club not stagnating when we finished in the same position, with 1 fewer point and a worse GD.

Ashley HAS to go, but Bruce HAS to go with him, if not sooner.

What a joke! We are embarrassing for a club our size.
What motivates these pundits? Would Charlie fckin Nicholas like Bruce at the Arsenal? NO, so why should we be happy?
I’m sick and tired of supporting this shit!
    Takeover now please!

When I did network training I found out a fundamental truth. Technically proficient people do not necessarily make good teachers of their subject. Impatience at perceived incompetence and assumed prior knowledge are two basic faults. Plus it’s totally thing different practising something to passing it in. Which is why relatively few players, even gifted ones, make it as coaches or managers and as second choice careers become pundits. After that it’s setting up their own business or driving for UPS.

    Dear oh dear oh dear
    Third best performance?!!???!!
    “B”?????????
    As good as Rafa???
    More attacking???

    Wow Charlie. Wow…

    The Citeh debacles
    Thumped by Norwich
Thumped by Leicester when trying non-Rafa setup
Limping past TWO league one sides and WBA b-team in the cup
    Giving 4 points to Villa
Needing insanely lucky results for points (Lejeune against Everton and Hayden against Chelsea for a start)
    Awful clueless football
    Defence gone backwards
    Way worse GD
Some of the fewest goals scored
    Injury record abysmal
No guidance to players during games

The water breaks after restart really showed him up – opposition in a group/huddle/circle with their manager giving advice/orders/observations, then our lads wandering around separately no points from the “coach” no guidance nothing.

Give over cabbage lickers please. . .

    BRUCE OUT
    TAKEOVER ASAP

    Hit Man

    Madness isn’t it?

We finish 13th in our third season in the prem, having spent most of the last 30 years in the top flight.

Newly promoted Sheff Utd finish 9th. They were just getting promoted from League 1 when we came back up to the prem, and have only had a few seasons in the prem throughout their history.

Apparently the PL are unsure who’s in charge of the PIF.
Do they know who’s in charge at Spurs? Who runs Chelsea? Or Wolves or Villa.
The bloody ownership was never questioned before so just bloody get on with it!

    @Moonraker
I do believe the PL on this. The Saudi’s know they won’t pass the O+D test so the application and responses to questions would’ve been answered in riddles to throw everyone off.
The PL have their own auditors and when it comes to this and a brand to protect. If the requirements aren’t fulfilled or done correctly, they will be fined a hefty fee and shamed further
If the would be owners cannot be forthcoming and honest, I don’t see this going in their favour and rightly so.

Bruce will be loving the praise he is getting but doesn’t realise that this will backfire when asking Ashley for money for players

“Oh Brucey boy you are doing a great job better than that Rafa clown got you a few players on loan and a few youngsters from France to tide you over”

Wow, you really are a bunch of idiots, Bruce would not have been my choice, but not to accept the truth by you lot is crazy, Charlie forgot to add the squad looks happier under Bruce than Rafa too. Rafa is a poor coach, full stop, and you love his name more than anything. Bunch of snobs and bullies.
