After Takeover Disappointment, Newcastle Need To Keep This Magpie On Tyneside

With the sad news of the takeover’s demise still setting in for many fans, the focus is now shifting toward next season where we’ll likely find it hard to make to much improvement on our 13th place finish.

Without the injection of Saudi riches and the damage the coronavirus has wreaked on club finances, Newcastle will have limited funds to make the necessary improvements in the squad.

Much of the reported £30m or so should be used to get in a couple of strikers as that’s the pressing issue that needs to be sorted. So that will leave little for other areas of need like the midfield and at left-back.

Newcastle are reported to be in negotiations for two free agents in midfielder Arnaud Lusamba and winger Ryan Fraser. Both would be good additions in the current climate.

There’s also Danny Rose, who Steve Bruce is keen to get back on a permanent deal after his half-season loan spell.

There was a report yesterday from Sport Witness who cite a German outlet that Schalke’s hopes of selling Nabil Bentaleb took a hit due to the takeover failure. However, we would think the opposite to be the case.

Whether Newcastle still want to pursue Bentaleb on anything other than another loan deal seems highly unlikely to us.

That leaves the situation with Matty Longstaff. Newcastle must redouble their efforts to keep the youngster at the club. His options are likely to be plentiful as he’ll be a very good bargain for some clubs with limited budgets.

There are reports West Ham, Southampton, and Burnley are monitoring his situation along with interest from Udinese in Serie A.

It would raise some spirits on Tyneside if Newcastle can convince Matty to sign a long term deal.

I’m still here, think my comments are being moderated though so not sure if you’ll see this.

I never really got the whole twitter thing to be honest. Seems like an incredibly limited format and just a hassle to navigate around.

Also too many fakes, shills, “influencers” and various other posers and liars.

Each to their own and I’m sure there are plenty of interesting people on there too, but it’s not for me.

Pulisic looks really hurt here. Hamstring I think. He won’t have long to recover for next season if it’s a bad one.

Can anyone remember when we had a good few months of us going to buy PEA? Actually I think we were “interested in him” for a few windows.

    Tsunki,
It was over a couple of seasons, we then went from Gomis which was also fairly protracted to the French Riverie who helped relegate us.

It was more the money you think we can get for our players and the general volume of ins and outs at one time.

the players to bring in are generally improvements i agree.

Just got back from a visit to the smoggy in-laws (a term they are not particularly fond of). Got on about the petition, explaining about PIF investing in Starbucks, Facebook, Uber, Marriott, Twitter and $500m in Disney amongst other things, also the arms trade deal with U.K. government to the tune of £260b. That the PL had no actual legal way of blocking the NUFC takeover. Anyway they detected the whiff of corruption and fair play I got a couple more signatures.

I think Arsenal could be an interesting proposition next season if Arteta is given a bit of money and some freedom in the market. Not gonna upset the title race but i think they’ll make the top 4 race a lot more interesting. There’s a lot of scope to cull deadwood within their squad.

Still entirely unconvinced with Lampard as a manager. Has a team packed with quality, great depth and apparently some of the best young English players ever produced but he doesn’t seem to have the know how to change a game when it’s getting away from them. With them spending big, i wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t make it through the season if they’re as unconvincing again next time around.

Not been Chelsea’s day here. Injuries all over the place and Kovacic sent off. Shame when cup finals are decided by those kinds of things, didn’t really care who won it out of those two though.

    The corrupt cartel in action.
In big games when they play their first teams the cartel can only beat each other.
It’s the law of the jungle.
    Nothing will change.
But it’s gradually killing the game

Highlight of that cup final was undoubtedly Aubamayang thinking he’d broken the cup by picking it up, then dropping it on the floor 5 seconds later.

We have been trying to get rid of Gayle for years but is now first choice.
Do you think arsenal would swap Aubamayang for Carroll and joe?
You know what, they would not swap him for our entire team less Maxim
That’s the unbridgeable gulf and arsenal were 8th but play in a different league. They were obviously not playing for emri

    KV,
The criteria for passing the O+D test is readily available online. Have a look.

It is a clear set of criteria that you can pass or fail. The bid either fails on the criteria or passes. No decision is not adhering to their processes or criteria. It is a clear pass/fail. I don’t see what fails it personally, but if it was failed on the test, then fair enough.

Champions League – Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United (all group stage)

Europa League – Leicester, Arsenal (both group stage), Tottenham (second qualifying round)

    Eight in Europe?

If the Saudis were playing games over the ultimate ownership of the club I’d say the PL gave them a fair chance by keeping the deal open and giving them a chance to make amendments.

The Saudis did themselves no favours by continuing their war with BeIN and banning legal broadcasts. Masters had already made it very clear that this was an area of concern for the PL.

The Saudis shot their own feet on this one. If they wanted to buy the club they really should have played ball with the PL and met them half way.

It sounds like they tried to bludgeon their way through the test and wanted everything done on their terms, which was never going to make them popular.

What do people expect the change.org petition will actually do? I mean seriously, it was made on one of the most ineffectual petition sites around, and they were hardly a bastion of justice before either.

It’s also bloody disappointing to see people saying “oh it’s amazing that it’s at 30 odd thousand” – ffs man, SJP can hold 52k and the petition hasn’t even got that in over 24 hours.

    carltoon,
That’s exactly what they done, the PL just put their heads in the sand knowing that they would eventually have to walk away or inherit a sinking ship. The Saudi’s have basically walked away to save us from being in limbo, the PL have acted disgracefully and would have sat back and watched us sink.

Where’s the glamour of the cup when it’s them every year, with an occasional smaller team getting beat off the big boys. It was fitting to see it played out to an empty stadium, it’s just the usual, not that I watched it.
