Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan still thinks the Amanda Staveley led takeover will be approved by the Premier League.
He said so last week, and he’s repeated his views today in the Chronicle, but surely it’s got to be a long shot, but we haven’t given up hope yet.
The Premier League does not seem to have been straight with this takeover, and they should be judging it by their current rules.
There are some rumors they will change the owners’ and directors’ test for future cases like this (very complicated and political) – but Newcastle shouldn’t be punished by the Premier League moving the goalposts.
This is what Simon Jordan (shown above) said when asked if the deal is dead:
“I don’t think so.”
“It’s interesting that Mike immediately put a statement out because what is being briefed to the press now and is coming out is that Mike tried to change the deal,”
“He tried to ramp the deal up and get a bit more money out of them. That’s not been said before now.”
“Newcastle fans are up in arms – and rightly so to some extent – but the challenge I have is if the EPL are exceeding their reach and remit.”
“We have three things on the table.”
“The regime (Saudi) and their human rights, we have got the piracy issue and the nation-state control. “
“The piracy issue is a real live issue, the human rights issue – well, this country deals with Saudi Arabia, so we can’t say football deals to a higher standard.”
“I don’t understand how a deal breaks down when the buyer and seller are in accord.”
“And the Premier League seem – in the eyes of the Newcastle fans – to be acting out of a sense of blocking it because they don’t want it and maintaining the status quo.”
“We must also remember that if Sheikh Mansour tried to buy Man City now, or the Glazers tried to buy Manchester United now, there’d be more resistance from the Premier League.”
So there you have it – a good explanation of why the Premier League should wave the deal through.
If they now want to change and make it more difficult for owners to come in and buy a Premier League club, via a changed owners’ and directors’ test – so be it.
But Newcastle United FC, the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, the Geordie fans around the world, and the north-east region in general should not be the ones to have to pay the price for the Premier League overstepping their current authority.
Comments welcome.
Note – here’s a petition to sign to get an independent review of the EPL Takeover process – please sign it – thanks.

No mate I made the decision not to sign it as soon as I saw people were trying to cheat it by signing up people who weren’t eligible or who didn’t know they were being signed up.
UK petitions are for UK residents, and all signatories should be willing. There should only be one signature per person.
If these basic rules aren’t upheld, there is no point in having a petition in the first place.
I won’t put my name to anything fraudulent, which sadly this petition was.

Comment #7Not to mention the fact that it was calling for action that is outside of MPs’ remit, so it was essentially asking the government to step in and get involved in a process that is outside of its jurisdiction.

Comment #15Should report the EPL and the top six PL clubs to the Competition and Markets Authority as they are running a cartel and acting together behind closed doors in an anti competitive manner to keep NUFC from being the force in football it deserves to be. Let the UK government investigate them as between them the account for circa 40% of the wealth of the EPL.
The text below is taken from the CMA website, it reads:
Businesses abusing their ‘dominant position’
This is another major type of anti-competitive activity by businesses that you can report to the CMA.
A business might have a ‘dominant position’ in the market if:
it has more than a 40% market share
it’s not affected by normal competitive restraints
It might be abusing a dominant position if it’s unfair to its customers or other businesses.
Tell us about any anti-competitive activity you have concerns about, by emailing general.enquiries@cma.gov.uk with the following information:
your contact details
the business you have concerns about and a description of the issue along with any supporting evidence
details of any other organisations you have contacted

My words were:
“I won’t PUT MY NAME to anything fraudulent”.
Illegal streams are anonymous: they require no sign-up and my presence goes undetected, hence I do not “put my name” to it.

But you’re willing to stream, just as long as your name is clear? But stating that this is a purely UK based petition signed only by UK residents doesn’t make sense since the Newcastle Utd fanbase is global, and without the Irish, South African, and the rest of the international fanbase, the petition would have taken a massive it. After all, this is supposed to be a united club so I won’t continue to push anyone to sign it

The top 6 are all seperate businesses. We can’t just lump them together to get to that 40% total unfortunately.

Non-UK residents are excluded from UK petitions for the same reason they don’t get to vote in our elections.
We have political self-determination, and preserving that is of paramount importance to the democratic process we have in place.

Comment #32Jib, you’re suddenly an expert on the CMA, I don’t think so. Have you actually ever dealt with them?
KV, fully appreciate that the top six are separate businesses but the point is that if they have colluded with the the EPL to block this deal then that is anti-competitive behaviour and is not allowed as they have formed a cartel. As fans we will never in a million years get to the bottom of what has occurred (nor will the media) but the CMA could and would be able to access private correspondence between the top six clubs and the EPL which might prove this to be the case. Let’s face it most football clubs are not first rate businesses and nor are their management teams.
If you want to learn the truth and uncover potential corruption within the Premier League then this actually is a good option. The government will do nothing with the petition, might just get a mention in parliamentary time but that will be the end of it.
