MP for Newcastle Central Chi Onwurah has launched a petition that demands from the Premier League ‘accountability’ and ‘transparency’ on the Newcastle takeover deal.
They never even came out with a decision and nobody really knows what happened in the four months the deal was being considered in their owners’ and directors’ test.
But there have been recent reports they thought that Saudi Arabia would essentially be the Newcastle owners, because they saw no difference between the PIF (Public Investment Fund) and the Saudi government.
That was the big point of disagreement and contention with the Amanda Staveley led consortium that led to the breakdown of the bid.
But that was reportedly back in late May, and they then seem to have held out for two months doing very little, but waiting for the consortium to get fed up and withdraw their bid.
They were successful in achieving that goal on July 30th.
Newcastle MP Chi Onwurah and Premier League CEO Richard Masters
But the CEO Richard Masters and the Premier League have come out of this looking weak and subservient to the top clubs in England, who never wanted the takeover to happen from day one.
The last thing they wanted was more competition at the top of the league.
Here is the petition in short:
“The Petitioners therefore request the House of Commons to take action to review the way in which the Premier League assessed the recent bid, and provide accountability to fans and local communities of clubs subject to takeover bids with particular reference to Newcastle United, and to commit to a timescale for a fan-led review of Football, as promised in the Government Manifesto.”
Here is a new petition for Premier League transparency from MP Chi Onwurah that she will present when Parliament returns.
