When talk of new contracts emerges at Newcastle, the name of Dwight Gayle rarely comes up. The striker will turn 30 in October and like 13 of his teammates, is entering the final year of his contract.
The talk around Gayle generally involves moves away from the club but that likely won’t be the case this summer. After an excellent finish to the last campaign in which he bagged 4 goals in the final 8 games, Gayle has established himself as Newcastle’s top striker.
There will hopefully be more competition for that distinction by the start of the season. However, Gayle is now a valued member of this squad and if he can keep fit, could finally get the chance to prove he is a Premier League quality striker.
There’s no talk of a new contract for Gayle just yet, and rightfully so. He was injured for the bulk of the last campaign and has a lot to prove. However, there’s also little chance that he’ll be sold this summer.
Both The Telegraph and The Shields Gazette have reported that Gayle will stay on Tyneside to see out the final year of his contract.
That makes sense with the limited funds available to improve the squad this summer. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if Dwight hits the ground running that an extension could be in his future.
But that’s all up to him and how well he does this season. Though he has a big fan in Steve Bruce, who said the following when asked about bringing in more firepower at the top of the pitch this summer:
“I’ve got to look at all areas of the squad.
“I was really impressed with Dwight at the end of the season, the way he finished. He had four in seven games when he was getting a bit fit. He’s come back and burst on to the scene. He’s looking in tip-top shape. He had two bad injuries last year.
“I know it’s a pivotal part of Newcastle’s folklore. If we can improve in any position, then I’ll try, but certainly, the forward areas are always the most mouth-watering ones and the ones which get reported on.”
Bruce seems to be echoing his comments from January when he said he’ll only bring in players that will improve the team. He ended up adding no strikers to the squad. Hopefully, he’s learned his lesson and will push to get at least one more quality forward in.
But it’s very good news that Dwight Gayle is in top shape as he’s the man to get the goals right now. A full season from Dwight in which he performs like he did in his final 8 games would solve a lot of Newcastle’s issues.
However, Bruce has to know he can’t risk that Gayle will remain fit and reproduce his productive patch after the lockdown. So another striker has to be brought in and Newcastle will likely have to spend some money to get one.
Here is a petition for Premier League transparency from MP Chi Onwurah that she will present when Parliament returns.

You say people are abusive to you. Might be an idea to read all your charming comments back some time. You could be gone a while.
if you really want a chat about – – – , fair and balanced and all that, I suggest you look at their respective CVs over 20 years, not one stilted season where we actually got less points, conceded way more and scored fewer while picking up a shed load of injures, with miggy all season, willems, st max for Perez and a 40m strker for rondon who pulis and pardew couldn’t get a tune out of.
It may make you more informed if not less biased. Fair and balanced, I’ve never known anyone be further from it. But hey you’re not stupid, I think you probably do realise this really as it’s pretty black and white and incontrovertible. You’d have to be a real dumbass not to, but but as you say you like winding people up and you’re predictable enough to guarantee you will say the same thing again tomorrow and the next day….and the next day….and the next. I feel a song from Frozen coming on.

Comment #5Just had a look over every clubs completed signings and no one has really moved much apart from the big clubs besides signing their loans from last season up to deals.
I think for every club bringing in 2 or 3 decent signings is as good as it will get

I’ve lost count of how many times you’ve told us that Brucie has done the same/similar to the legend…. if Brucie gets 40 points this season with 35 scored and 60 conceded, are you still going to keep telling us they’ve achieved the same.

Comment #12I wonder if we might look at someone like Claude-Maurice from Nice. We seem to have done a fair bit of scouting at their games the past 18 months, has pretty much come through to replace ASM within the team. Good pace, good dribbler.

Comment #13With all due respect to everyone, why waste your spare time on here discussing transfers for the upcoming season when you could spend that time much more productively by hammering the Prem League, Barclays etc etc on social media???
You cannot influence the clubs purchases before the new season starts but you can certainly influence the Premier Leagues decision making on a takeover.
Has everyone given up on that dream or what?

Comment #17Dwight Gayle. Still here. I like the lad, a great championship striker but sadly not up to the PL. And no way will he magically pull the golden boot out of his rear this season. That’s without being third choice striker In a Steve Bruce outfit.
I reckon he will be the same as last year.

Comment #22We still have the age old problem at NUFC – a completely clueless & disorganised midfield incapable of moving the ball around effectively or stopping us getting cleaned out in our own half. No cover at all for our central defense and no product to get the ball forward. ASM and Miggy aren’t really part of a midfield, they are lone guns making what they can out of scraps.

If PiF or Stavely made a statement saying the deal was still on but the PL need to do this or that then there would be 100K signatures in 2 days. But they haven’t said anything and most have given up rather than prolong the agony.

Comment #33The players who have been featured so far in club photos are the following:
Miguel Almiron, Christian Atsu, Dan Barlaser, Andy Carroll, Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow, Martin Dubravka, Paul Dummett, Federico Fernandez, Dwight Gayle, Mark Gillespie, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, Florian Lejeune, Sean Longstaff, Javier Manquillo, Jacob Murphy, Matt Ritchie, Henri Saivet, Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey, DeAndre Yedlin, Kelland Watts.
Fabian Schar is still recovering from injury, so whether he has been left at home or is with the squad and doing recovery work on his own behind the scenes at the training camp, is unknown.
Two other missing faces are easy to explain, as Steve Bruce has said that Achraf Lazaar and Rolando Aarons have no future at Newcastle. Quite ironic as the pair were with Bruce on loan at Hillsborough before he walked out on Sheffield Wednesday to join NUFC.
However, two others missing Newcastle United players aren’t as easy to explain, if they indeed aren’t with the squad for the training camp.
So far there is no sign at all of Joelinton or Yoshinori Muto.
Which considering it is only two and a half weeks before the season kicks off and you’d imagine Steve Bruce would surely have wanted everybody at this pre-season training camp, especially with Mike Ashley seemingly blocking any spending on transfer fees this window.
Checking the government list of countries where if you are returning from you have to self-isolate, Japan isn’t included at the moment but Brazil is, so potentially that could be a reason for Joelinton to be missing, though not Muto.
In previous close seasons, Newcastle United have published a list of players who are included in pre-season training camps but not this time.
Steve Bruce has said in recent days that Fabian Schar is currently the only player out injured, so no explanation for their possible absence there.
At this afternoon’s friendly, Steve Bruce has stated that he intends to play two different teams of eleven players, in an extended match format of around two hours against Crewe, so if Muto and Joelinton are there, they will surely be included.
Hopefully Muto is getting fixed up with a new club, whilst as for Joelinton, who knows. Spending £40m+ on the Brazilian was a massive Mike Ashley disaster last season and you would think that surely the former Bundesliga player would be needing / wanting every single minute of pre-season training and friendlies he can get, if he hopes to hit the ground running when the season kicks off.
Hail Wor Staveley

Comment #34Gayle will reliably score at a rate of 1 in 3.
Problem is he won’t stay fit all season to get circa 12 league goals and we don’t have any other ST capable of scoring at half that rate otherwise. Muto might have been if he actually was given a chance when he arrived, but I imagine his ability has atrophied and confidence has been shot given his marginalisation since he arrived.
Second problem is, our football DNA has become such that we need a Ba/Rondon type to have a more cohesive attacking threat, bringing ASM/Almiron (and a third supporting attacking player of good quality we don’t currently have) into play more often and enhancing their contribution. A ST who can do the Gayle stuff and more.
