We’ll likely find out sometime this week how accurate the reports are that Newcastle will bring in Arsenal defender Rob Holding on a season-long loan. While he’s a very good young player, Newcastle are currently overstocked with central defenders.
With that in mind, there’s another link to a center-back that has recently emerged which seems very dodgy. Sport Witness is citing a claim from Turkey that Newcastle have bid an initial €22m for Galatasaray center-back Marcao.
However, Galatasaray wants a sell-on percentage added to the deal so Newcastle have revised their offer to €19m plus 10% of any future sale.
The report maintains that an agreement is very close but we just can’t see Newcastle bidding half of their summer budget on a center-back.
Marcao (pictured above) is a 24-year-old Brazilian who primarily plays as a center half. However, he can also do a job as a defensive midfielder.
He moved to Galatasaray for €4m in January of 2019 from Portuguese club Chaves. He has since made 60 appearances for the Turkish club, including 39 last season.
Marcao is a ball-playing defender who can bring the ball out from the back. If these reports are accurate, which we just can’t see at the moment, it could mean that either Fabian Schar or Florian Lejeune are on their way out.
Schar is entering the final year of his contract while Lejeune has just two years left on his. Both appear to be down in the pecking order currently with the shift to a flat back four.
We just don’t see much in this report due to the transfer fee involved. That is especially the case if Rob Holding is a serious candidate for a season-long loan.
Here is a petition for Premier League transparency from MP Chi Onwurah that she will present when Parliament returns.

That’s definitely another way that it can be took and nobody could argue with that. It’s hard for me to argue with that but it’s not because I’m an optimist it’s because I think logically and I believe there’s stuff going on in the background and if it is true and Ashley is working with the consortium he will be tighter than ever on the purse strings because he wants rid.

Comment #9If we are trying to sign CB why are we not trying to get Kurt Zoumba from Chelski? They have signed new CB’s so surely he would be available?

All of a sudden journo’s bollix transfer nonsense clickbait…
Is the God’s honest truth…
ie., we are interested in Ibe.
Cue the doomsters who then proceed to blast the idiocy, blah, blah, blah of going after a £15M flop of a disaster signing by Bournemouth.
So, so predictable and so, so boring at the same time.

Comment #12In a way you could actually see the logic in getting new CBs which would allow us to play a high line and be better in possession
Holding and this guy would be better coming out with the ball allowing us to start moves where Shelvey doesn’t come short to collect the pass…..
Look at our CB’s just now:
Lascalles great defender , decent pace, leader and organises so well but not the best on the ball
Fernandez good defender , decent on the ball not very fast and older
Schar good on the ball , not the best defender, not fast and doesn’t want to be here?
Clark decent on the ball and defending , not that fast and is older
Lejuene great on the ball , really slow and injury prone plus not that great a defender
Dummett Great defender , pacey , scared of the ball sometimes and is injury prone
Most of them could be upgraded if we are looking at changing our game but again all that extra possession and being more open without a goal scorer will just result in us getting smashed on the counter all the time

Yeah I can see the logic in upgrading or defence, but we desperately need a goalscorer or two and a creative midfield player

Some statistic or some other evidence to that comment #12 and you have written a very good article / opinion piece. However, all I see is an accumulation of dead wood with Penfold in absentia / in charge.

Was it only having CB playing across the back four because of injuries / overworked full backs.

Comment #27Peter Kenyon is partners in a company called quality sports investments. They specialise in buying portions of ownership rights of south american players. This crowd were involved in the Joelinton deal too you can be sure of. Its all very shady, 40 million for Joelinton was never for the player only it involved lots of other things like exclusivity, agents and brown envelopes etc. Rafa knew the score but wanted no part and was probably the straw that broke the camels back.
