Newcastle fans are hardly in a good mood right now and in fact, depression seems to be the name of the game.
Newcastle fans are either really upbeat, or the sky is falling in – and at this time, the sky is falling in, and quickly too.
But if you take things in context over the last fourteen months, we haven’t done too badly.
And if Steve Bruce can get in a couple of (very) good strikers, then we should have a better team than last year.
But of course, the 5-1 hammering at Middlebrough last Tuesday in the penultimate game of preseason didn’t help things.
Miguel Almiron – one of Newcastle’s star players
And today one of Newcastle’s star players, Miguel Almiron, has talked on nufcTV, and seems to try to cheer up the Geordie fans:
“I think it was a difficult result for us to take in that game.” “We were never at ease in the game, really.”
“But as we all know these are friendly games, and we are in the process of getting ourselves ready for the new league season.”
“We need to improve in a lot of areas.” “But I don’t think that we should be panicking really.”
“It’s more about continuing to work hard like we have been doing already so we can up our game.”
“I think that performances will get better as we get more games under our belt.”
“Yes, those kind of games can sometimes leave you feeling frustrated.”
“But like I was saying they are friendly games, and as such they are useful workouts where we can discover exactly where we are up to.”
“What we need to be looking at to improve as well as seeing where we are performing well, and of course, not so well.”
“I think the key is to keep a level head and keep putting in the hard work.” “I think it was a difficult result for us to take in that game.”
The way to look at friendly games is that if we win – a win is a win after all – and that’s just terrific.
If we lose then it’s time to say – well it’s only a friendly game and the result doesn’t really matter.
🙂
But the 5-1 defeat at Middlebrough has to be a wakeup call for the lads.
And in our last preseason friendly game at St. James’ Park against Stoke on Saturday – a win would be welcome.
What do you think?

Comment #1A mate of mine goes into the Kissing Cousins pub in Newcastle and asks for a pint of bitter with a head on it. He gets one from the barman, and then asks him to keep an eye on the pint whilst he nips to the toilet. Barman agrees.
Matey comes back from the toilet only to find the pint is still there but the head is missing.
“What happened to the head on my pint?!” He asks the barman, to which the barman replies, “well, see that large athletic looking lady over there? ..While you were in the gents she came over and farted on your pint and blew the head right off it”.
“Right” says Matey, “I’m going to have a word with her!”.
He storms over to the lady and asks, “Excuse me.. you fart in my Whitbread?”
..and she says…wait for it… wait for it…

Comment #6A fully fit Ryan Fraser would more than compensate for losing Richie
Fraser has similar workrate and tenacity but he actually can beat a man and has pace
The lack of a left back in the squad is just as much of a freakout as the lack of strikers! Manquillo will no doubt be dumped in that position first few games with Yedlin/Krafth on the right

Comment #7I don’t think Fraser would fly up to Newcastle unless he’s really keen and he wouldn’t be invited if it wasn’t gonna happen!
Now we need a good centre forward to convert his chances.
I think Fraser is a brilliant signing; I can see him and ASM reeking havoc!

Comment #8Mund if Bruce convinces Fraser to sign, then fair play to him. Anybody who thinks Bruce hasn’t got a role to play right now is naive.
Mind you, if Fraser walks, Bruce will get pelters.

Agreed I want to see more from Almiron he should easily be capable of 10 goals and as many assists even under Bruce!
He missed so many good chances last season in games ASM should also be producing more goals this season

I honestly don’t think Miggy is good enough for the Prem! I’m sorry as he’s got a great attitude but…..
Not Joelinton by the way.
I would be happy with Wilson though!

Comment #14This is great if true and hope it goes through.
Fraser adds a good bit of quality to our attacking third for sure and is exactly the type of player I hoped we would bring in. Get him signed and then the Striker and Left Back

Remember Arsenal were looking at him not so long ago. Top assist maker in the Premier League a year ago. This would be a good signing IMO if Newcastle can complete the deal. Fraser is impressed by the size & stature of the club
…and our world-beating facilities.

Comment #16Tsunki maybe Mund doesnt want to engage with you because you’re a full-of- yourself nasty troublemaking bullying twat? Seems reasonable. 🙂
No doubt we can expect some vicious comments now. Usually a mix of comments about intelligence/ireland/green/irish sea/my son/Liverpool.
Followed by another comment (because you forgot a bit in the first one).

Comment #17So the journo`s reckon Fraser is in talks with Bruce, well lets see how long it takes for this DEAL to get done, maybe he will have his medical just before the new season, then another club nips in with a better offer.
Villa have had a 15M offer knocked back for Wilson by Bournemouth APPARENTLY, but where is the proof of that?
IF that is true then we can assume the selling club will want at least 20M for him, in which case we can kiss goodbye to his services.
I am convinced Ashley won`t part with a penny in this window unless he sells one or more of our more valuable assets.
Rumours that we had 30M+ to spend? That will include wages no doubt, it always does with Ashley.

Bruce is the only one with any knowledge of players. He might be weak on coaching but I’m sure he recognises a good player!
So far that’s Kendrick to bolster the midfield and Fraser to add punch up front! Now for the big one! CF! We can’t risk an unknown foreigner; it’s got to be a premier league player.
Callum Wilson, would be my favourite but I would get Charlie Austin from West Brom as backup on a one year contract. Daft as it sounds he’d be a better bet than Joelinton!

Comment #19Fraser’s a Scot and nae daft
Free flight to Newcastle saves pounds on petrol and cut his journey time back to Scotland for a wee nip of whisky with his family up there.
Sign the man, he’s got style
P.S keep RitchIe and sign Callum Wilson . It’ll be like Bournemouth on Tyne

Comment #20Lee, his finishing improved last season ( shh under SB). His goal v Bournemouth was v good. He is better off playing centrally ( possible kudos to bruce there too) but I think he may go through a career in England never knowing what his best position was. His passing and control is poor but I love his energy.

Comment #21Fair play to Charnley and Nickson if we do get Fraser the package they offered must be a good one .
Not very often id prasie Charnley but if he gets the figures right on this one fair play.
Just hope now he doesn’t get brucied and ends up going backwards.

I know Ashley includes wages in the transfer fee but that’s wrong if he’s selling someone then the wages have already been accounted for!
It also means Fraser isn’t on a “free” as you have to count his wages, say £10 million over his contract.

Comment #27I think Almiron had his best spell when himself Rondon and perez all settled together he new what to do they all worked together.
Last season the poor fella looked at bit lost didn’t no if he was a central midfield a number 10 or a winger .
But we can’t blame him for that.
Another good signing though and our ex manager fought to get him .

It depends who our competition is for Fraser, can`t see many showing interest atm.
We might get a free run at signing him and still screw it up, time will tell.

Comment #29I genuinely think Almiron might do better as a deeper midfielder, playing more as an 8. He’s got a great work rate, he can run all game and he’s a surprisingly good defender. He would give us progression from deep as he’s so good at breaking the lines and carrying the ball but it would perhaps take away some of the pressure on him having to finish/create as many chances.

Comment #31Newcastle should always be able to cherry pick players from Burnley and Bournemouth its been because of Ashley that its viewed as something that we cannot do until we sign Fraser that is!
I wonder if this is Bruce actually saying to Ashley look I need premier league proven players here if you want another season without relegation as last seasons gambles from abroad just did not work I need guys who know the league?
Or does anyone think buying British this season is because next year we will be out of the EU so domestic players will soar in value?

Comment #32Good signing if we get him, but we still need 12 new players. We need the following:
Left back x2
1 Right back
2 Wingers
2 Holding midfielders
1 Playmaker
4 Strikers
