Newcastle Fall 1-0 To Stoke In Final Pre-season Friendly

After tasting victory in our first two friendlies, Newcastle have consecutive defeats with the season kicking off at West Ham next Saturday.

This is the team Steve Bruce selected for the final pre-season warm-up against Stoke City. The squad has just 16 players named with 12 Magpies missing.

Bruce had a few players unavailable due to international duty in Jeff Hendrick and Emil Krafth. Also, Jamaal Lascelles was suspended due to his sending off at Middlesbrough which I had completely forgotten about.

The lads played in their new yellow away shirts for the first time. To be fair, they actually look a lot better than I had originally thought.

Here is how Stoke City started this match.

The Potters took an early lead on an 18th-minute header by Sam Clucas. Newcastle had a few chances to level the score but were unable to find a breakthrough. The half ended 1-0 to Stoke.

Newcastle made no changes to start the second as they pushed for an equalizer. Allan Saint-Maximin had an effort saved in the first minute of the second half.

Jacob Murphy had a shot saved in the 69th minute after being sent through on goal with an amazing pass from Dan Barlaser.

A few minutes after Murphy’s golden chance, Newcastle made the following three changes.

Barlaser was also brought off for Henri Saivet in the 81st minute. The young midfielder has had his moments this preseason. Whether he’s done enough to secure a squad place is unclear as Newcastle will have a surplus of players and it may be best for Dan to spend at least the first half of this season out on loan.

Unfortunately, Newcastle were unable to get that elusive goal today and have once again lost to a Championship side that struggled last season. However, looking at the squad from today, it’s not an unexpected result.

Hopefully, these past few weeks of pre-season will push the Newcastle hierarchy into closing at least three deals in the next few days.

If Wilson signs I really hope he gets the number 9 shirt some way, but can’t see it.

    Shelvey-esque pass from Barlaser that.

Would like to see him be given a chance ahead of Matty.

Not putting any stock in that result. Had the better chances and didn’t take them. Makeshift back 4 with a few sitting out as precautions.

One week to West Ham and hopefully some morale boosting signings in the run up.

I don’t think I have ever been less optimistic during a preseason.

The current squad isn’t anywhere near as good as the one McClaren got relegated.

The overall morale and friendly results are extremely worrying; Bruce went 12 months at Sunderland with only three wins — this coming season has very much that feel about it — some of us left wondering where the wins are going to come from.

We really look hopeless, but to give a bit of positivity, I wouldnt be surprised at all if they are playing to loose to try and convince Ashley to spend.

Think about it, if we had won our last 2 most people would be saying we look decent. But these losses to such weak opposition put massive pressure on Ashley to spend.

Wudnt be too worried yet. That squad/team needs 4/5 new players. And I’d have Bruce ahead of Schteve.

Lejuene is probably the best player is the squad, but he’s injury prone. That’s his problem.

Not an unexpected result? Unfortunately, with Bruce coaching it isn’t but that team should not have lost to a team that was on the verge of League 1. We can pretend that they weren’t trying but that’s no excuse

Yes, me and others comment that we won’t get x and y because we won’t pay salary etc.

    But are we wrong?

I know you’re missing someone to come to your rescue when your in a corner, but fear not, there’s a small number who post happy clappies who’ll pull you out when you’re really stuck.

I’d bet that every other EPL team is trying out their youngsters in pre-season games, can’t see why we don’t.

But I cant even remember the last time we started the season strongly even on the easy start outs. We are historically horrible starters.

You really must know nothing about football if you listen to Bruce’s opinion. If Bruce comes out playing the crap football we were burdened with last season I’m just going to quit watching and wait until he’s gone. I’m not staying up to 2am to watch us play like Burnley/ Hull etc. We’re even poaching the Burnley rejects now.

That Stoke line-up is what we are rapidly becoming. Players with EPL experience who can run and/or are strong but are utterly sh** and out of date in the modern game. Half their team are types that get described as ‘can do a job’ or ‘battle hardened’ or ‘can hit the ground running.’ All these dscriptions really mean ‘sh** 80s throwback.’ One per team is useful. Get too many and you’ll be Stoke, near the bottom of the championship. Bruce still thinks he can replicate his ancient tactics in the modern era.

I have to say that Lejeune did look majestic at times under Rafa. Don’t know if it’s Bruce , injuries or lack of confidence but he looks a shadow of his former self now.

I was wondering how Ashley could sanction Wilson aged 28, almost 29 at 20M when he wouldn’t Rondon at 16M and now we have our answer, he wouldn’t.
Not too disappointed as Wilson has been extremely injury prone. Would love to see Ineanacho come here.

20m for Wilson is stupid. Can anyone name a striker in modern times who relies on pace and has been injury prone (Wlison has had several big knee injuries) that was still at the top by the age of 30. And Wilson has only scored 3 goals since 6th of October (almost a year). Joelinton possibly got as many in that time from less chances. He’s clearly a spent force and it will be a miracle if he doesnt continue his downwards trajectory. At least Joelinton can only get better and has no pace to lose. Big slow target men don’t peak until later. Wilson can only get worse. How will we ever sell him?

Wilson will comfortably score 10-14 league goals given a full season, with Fraser and ASM and Shelvey – statistically 3 of the PLs top 20 chance creators per 90mins.

    Ctommo, from this morning

Jamal Lewis has got prem experience, but so has every player in every relegated side. That alone doesn’t guarantee he is good enough to be worth £13m

He’s also played at international level, but not at one of the top sides. Again, that alone doesn’t guarantee he’s worth £13m.

You could pick up a similar standard of player from Eastern Europe or South America for less than £5m.

This is an average option for a side trying to avoid relegation with a hefty price tag. It’s not a particularly ambitious signing and it’s not a cheap deal for a player who was a bit better than average in the side that finished rock bottom last season.

We could do worse, and it’s certainly a better deal than we got on Joelinton, but at the same time it’s not particularly exciting news.

If we do sign these players we are linked with we will be a much stronger side so unless brucie finishes top 10 it will be classed as a failure.
He will have the tools to do the job a much stronger outfit than our ex manager the top 10 is a must or else its will classed as failure .
