Well, where do we start? That was a very solid and professional display by Newcastle United. The team was well set up and looked a continual threat going forward. Kudos to Steve Bruce with his ambitious team selection having two strikers on the pitch away from home.
Callum Wilson’s movement and striker’s instincts made a massive difference from the start of last season. Andy Carroll was a beast all evening and announced as much with a crunching aerial challenge on Tomas Soucek in the first minute of the game.
New boys Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick also had their moments. Lewis worked well with Allan Saint-Maximin down the left flank and put in some excellent deliveries. Hendrick Was a little quiet on the right in the first half but was outstanding in the second with a goal and an assist.
Speaking of Saint-Maximin, it was another electric display from the Frenchman. The Hammers were once again terrorized by the winger. It wasn’t as bad as a year ago when he torched Pablo Zabaleta but Ryan Fredericks did have his hands full.
The defense was disciplined with some excellent displays from our stout duo at the back, Federico Fernandez and Jamaal Lascelles. Javier Manquillo continues his rise from last season. The midfield pairing of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden were also once again at the top of their game.
While Karl Darlow wasn’t forced into any dramatics, he gets a clean sheet in his first Premier League match since February of 2018. This was a very promising performance for a team that should only get better as they continue to gel.
