Top Marks Across The Pitch In Our Player Ratings For Win At West Ham

This was the side that earned Newcastle a resounding 2-0 win at West Ham on Saturday, including our three second-half substitutes.

Here are our player ratings for the match:

Karl Darlow – 6.5

A very professional and solid display from our back-up keeper. He didn’t have to make any stops to save the day but didn’t have any blunders either. Karl keeps a clean sheet in his first league appearance in two and a half years.

Javier Manquillo – 7

Manquillo put in an effective performance at right-back. He provided an outlet down the right flank while Hendrick tended to drift inside on occasion. Part of a back four that kept a clean sheet.

Fede Fernandez – 8

Fernandez, like Manquillo, continues his rise from obscurity to stalwart after coming in from the cold last season. Another dominating display from the Argentine. He’s become our most reliable center-back and put in another warrior-like performance.

Jamaal Lascelles – 7

Lascelles was outstanding leading a backline that kept West Ham very quiet. Jamaal did make a mistake advancing the ball forward that almost cost Newcastle when he was dispossessed. However, he and Fernandez make a stout Premier League pairing and that was on full display this evening.

Jamal Lewis – 7

Lewis grew into the game very well and will be a joy to watch down the right flank. He played a few too many unnecessary back passes early on and was beaten on occasion. However, Jamal grew in confidence after his first bomb down the left resulted in a Callum Wilson header just wide of the goal. A very promising performance from the youngster.

Jeff Hendrick – 8

Hendrick was quiet but effective in the first half as Newcastle concentrated much of the attack down the left flank. However, his quality came to the fore in the second half for all to see. An outstanding flick in front of the net led to Wilson’s opening goal. His patience and composure was all class as he calmly stroked home his second-half goal. After the big signings this week, Hendrick has been a bit of an afterthought. However, he put in a Man of the Match type display as he showed his quality on and off the ball.

Isaac Hayden – 7.5

Hayden helped control the midfield with his physical play. He did well moving the ball forward while also shielding the backline. It was an astute sliding tackle by Isaac to dispossess Declan Rice leading to a Callum Wilson break in the first half. It’s a relief that his future is now sorted.

Jonjo Shelvey – 7

Shelvey dictated the tempo of the match from the midfield. He sprayed the ball around and also kept possession well. Took some decent set pieces and also put in a few crosses. Not everything came off but Jonjo played a big part in this victory.

Allan Saint-Maximin – 7

Allan didn’t have much of an end product but was also fouled 8 times by a frightened West Ham side. His pace was electric and his trickery caused the Hammers problems as he constantly tried to create chances. The Frenchman found a willing cohort in Jamal Lewis who bombed forward on occasion and created some chances of his own.

Andy Carroll – 7.5

Andy Carroll announced his presence in the first minute with a leading elbow into Tomas Soucek just after kick-off. The big Geordie didn’t get that elusive goal but was a battering ram all evening. You just can’t deny his impact on this game. It was immense. He also looks like he’s getting very close to full fitness but Bruce will have to handle him with care as he’s no shrinking violet on the pitch.

Callum Wilson – 8

What a difference a proper striker makes. Wilson’s movement was otherworldly as he kept finding space in the box. He had three efforts in the first half but couldn’t get any on target. However, his presence in the box posed a constant threat to West Ham. Showed his predatorial instincts with his quick reaction for the goal. Last season, we were crying out for a striker with his skillset. An excellent debut for what could be a transformative addition to this team.

Joelinton – n/a

Big Joe came on for Allan Saint-Maximin in the 75th minute. Not enough time on the pitch for a rating.

Miguel Almiron – n/a

Came on for Callum Wilson in the 85th minute. Not enough time on the pitch for a rating but did get an assist soon on Jeff Hendrick’s goal.

Sean Longstaff – n/a

Came on for Andy Carroll in the 88th minute. Not enough time on the pitch for a rating.

We looked way better as a team today, big balls Brucey going with a 4-4-2.
We still have Fraser to add into the mix, yes I know itโ€™s only one win but against West Ham away, most had us losing that game, so great result.

    Rom,

Weโ€™re heading back to Michigan….I just wanna make sure the apartment is ok (I havenโ€™t been there for about 2 and half months).
Weโ€™ll get there and stay for a week or two, explore the area and then head back to New York

More worried about ASM than AC as a candidate for the treatment table unless he gets more protection from refs.

He was targeted from the off by WH and the ref just let it happen.

Most fouled player in the Prem. today with twice as many as anyone else.

    Excellent result
Centre of midfield we lacked a bit link up to forwards who had to drop. Ack to much.
Man of he notch to me was Manquilla was excellent
Wilson impressed with his movement in and around the box Always looking to get in front of defenders and a goal which we have lacked.
Only thing is we have to move the ball quicker

Darlow had a good solid game, I think there were a few on here who thought he’d be a weak link in defence but he weren’t! What he had to do he did well and I reckon he had that first ball to hit the bar covered.

A lot of peeps seem to think Hendrick played out of position tonight.

However for any Fifa connoisseurs out there will know his main position for Burnley is RM then CAM then CM.

So its probably why Brucie was keen to get him in due to his versatility.

Judging by his great debut not a bad freebie ๐Ÿ™‚
