It’s very early days but the lads have gotten off to a dream start with an away win at the London Stadium marking the first time Newcastle have won their first match since 2012.
There were some terrific performances throughout the team. In fact, no Magpie had a bad outing. Our three new lads really looked the part with Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick opening their accounts on their debuts.
There’s not much rest to be had before Bruce and the boys go again. On Tuesday evening, Blackburn come to town for the second round of the Carabao Cup. Bruce has made a point to prioritize the cups so we expect him to name a rotated but very strong side.
However, Newcastle have started the season with a great win and that was a theme from some of the lads who took to social media after the game to express their joy with the excellent start to this season.
Great start to our @NUFC premier league season, two top goals and clean sheet. Start as we mean to go on. Let’s focus for the next match. #NUFC pic.twitter.com/HNV6XzCEQk

Comment #41I’d love to see Leicester continue to struggle like they did the second half of last season. Can’t stand that arrogant Rodgers.

Comment #43I liked the 442 fluid formation. It seemed to be changing to 433 at times with ASM pushing forward and Wilson playing wider. It might be something we see away from home as it gives us an extra protective dimension with someone like Hendrick on the field. I was surprised at how well the tactics seemed to work. Credit where its due.

Comment #45Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Hendrick was bad at all. Just not MOTM for me.

Comment #46I think to be fair the polar views on Hendricks performance are equally valid, depending on which parts of his game you were concentrating on he went from extremely cold to extremely hot. It has to be down to a combination of lack of match time and playing in a mostly unfamiliar setup of new players around him. It’s important that a player covering that wing position not only knows his role but also that of the players around him, particularly with Manquillo, what was the overlap arrangement, how were they going to conserve energy between them and make sure there wouldn’t be a gap opening up at the right back position. For a bit of the first half I was relieved that West ham weren’t good enough to exploit some of the slow and unco-ordinated understanding but that gradually got better, and confidence ensued. Some really intelligent balls forward by Hendrick (that turn and punt up the line for the runner was actually my favourite because he knew where his man was before he turned around), and I think he came into his own when he started to impose on Manquillo just who would go forward and when. Manquillo can get forward and put crosses in but his product is a bit lacking. Hendrick I think will be an asset if he is allowed that forward and just cutting inside role a bit more.

Comment #47While an admiral performance by Leeds it was pointed out on MOTD that they sometimes had 6 players in and around the oppositions box. That is a receipe for exposure to break away attacks and with our wingers and strikers they might find that difficult to sustain.
Our lads are clearly bonding well as a group which bodes well.

Comment #48No not MotM. ASM all day for me he drew so much attention that he made it easy for the rest of the midfield by creating space and exhausted their defenders.

I’m fairly certain it’s the exact same thing that was being said about Norwich last season.. And we all all know how well that worked out for them.

Comment #50Good deserved win but things could’ve gone differently.
MOM AC, debutants did very well. Must start Almiron!
On bets, shouldn’t have paired our win with Azarenka.
Anyway, got another. Newcastle win, Palace win, Leicester win.
Thought the third was a banker! Watching this, West brom the better side.

Comment #51Everyone has their own opinion, but I thought Jeff Hendrick was MOM yesterday. (Could have easily picked Callum Wilson too).
I am not sure if some people think he should be making mazy runs, besting 3/4 players at a time, but that is not his game. We have Maxi for that. He broke up play, didn’t really give the ball away and I thought had really good debut. A goal and assist, what more can you ask for.
It is also so nice to have a striker that knows how to be a striker. Wilson was class tonight. If he stays fit we have a great centre forward on our hands.
Held the ball up, can beat a man and has pace. Don’t think we have had a forward like that for ages.

Comment #54Wilson was my MOTM. It was exciting seeing a hungry forward who wants to score and and absolute day light robbery for 20M.
Hopefully next year big Joe gracefully gives him the number 9 shirt as Wilson empathises exactly what that shirt means to us fans.

Comment #56One of the best deals we’ve made under Ashley, is selling ayoze to Leicester for 30mil.
Hes worth 30m as much as joelinton is worth 40m. He’s completely useless in attack for them.
Lol. Great business that.

Comment #60Would sign Willems on loan, Sissoko for £10m and Marega for £14m. That’ll be good enough until January where we can probably sign a right back and playmaker/striker.

Comment #65As regards who was man of the match its all about opinions, the most important thing is most of the lads played well yesterday when you consider most of the players are still a bit rusty and not match fit as its only the first match for both teams, but the new players all played very well and made a huge difference to the over all balance to the team, and we carried a mutch bigger threat going forward in the final thrid. A lot of us Irish who follow the toon wont be to surprised at Hendricks performance as we have watched him play quite a lot for Ireland, he is a very good professional and i expect him to be a great addition to the squad, as will the other new players. Steve Bruce said lots not get carried away as its only the first match, wise words by Bruce as one good day doesnt make a summer, i think with the players we have now we should hopefully not be involved in a relegation battle this year, in my opinion we will finish somewhere 10th to 15th. Make up your mind, you called me an imergrant. I said I was, and gave the criteria which was set for me to move.
Then you change it to refugee Dr’s from Syria.
I’m all for protecting those in immediate danger, but the last time I Checked, it’s not Syrian Dr’s that are flooding our shores, if they are, how poorly educated are we in the west.
Is France at war? Last time I check that one to, it wasn’t.
These people have passed many safe countries to get to the uk, Sweden, Germany, Norway, they come for the free benifits, that numpties like you had out for free.
Thats a fact.

Comment #70Despite my bigging up Hendrick I went for AC as MOM.
He was the classic big hold up player with some very deft skilful touches and made it possible for our lads to get up the field in numbers.
Him and Wilson will scare the sh!t out of a lot of defences this season, fitness allowing!
