If Bruce Has His Way, Squad Could Have Room For Two More Additions

After Newcastle’s flurry of transfer activity at the start of last week, the focus has shifted to offloading a handful of fringe players. If successful, it could open the door to strengthen this squad even more, which is likely the end game for Steve Bruce.

Newcastle have already sent Florian Lejeune to Alaves for a season-long loan. Yoshinori Muto is reportedly very close to doing the same with Eibar. The 28-year-old is due to complete the move in the next 24-hours per Keith Downie, with Sky Sports.

During his press conference for Blackburn this morning, Steve Bruce mentioned the move for Muto. He also stated that both Henri Saivet and Christian Atsu needed to find new clubs as well.

There is speculation that DeAndre Yedlin, Jacob Murphy, and Dan Barlaser could also be moved on to make way for new additions. Both Rolando Aarons and Achraf Lazaar were not handed squad numbers and recently rejected pay-outs but their days at Newcastle are numbered.

Below is the squad Bruce could have in mind as it leaves room for a couple more additions. Matty Longstaff will not take up a place since he’s just 20.

Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow, Mark Gillespie

Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth, Javier Manquillo, Paul Dummett, Jamal Lewis

Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick, Sean Longstaff, Matty Longstaff*

Callum Wilson, Andy Carroll, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle, Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, Ryan Fraser, Matt Ritchie

If Bruce names these 23 players that leaves room for two more additions before the window closes in October. We expect one of those to be another striker and possibly a versatile defender.

However, Bruce will have to be successful in offloading Saivet, Atsu, and Yedlin. We suspect that Murphy and Barlaser will be easy to move out on loan.

If he can’t clear all of these players, there’s still the option of leaving Dwight Gayle out as he won’t be available for four months. He could then be added in January once fit and whoever didn’t get moved could then be shifted.

Bruce appears to be working to clear all of the dead weight this window. If he is successful while bringing in two more players, even on loan, that would be an outstanding accomplishment. This would truly be a window where he stamped his authority on the squad.

All my buddies are playing this but I’m too biased (and lazy) if I’m honest. Can’t be arsed with the rest of em.

Just give me wins NUFC, I’m alright.

Good luck to you boys and girls.

I’d like to see some of the kids in the squad for the Blackburn but It’s good to see that we can put out a strong team without them.

We’ve been packing for our short 5 day break, the missus has managed to pack all she need in the steamer trunk and I’ve managed to fill up my Aldi carrier bag so we are all set to go!

    …….Fraser………..Wilson…………..St Max.

We get that extra mid, we can consistently set up like this in certain fixtures, and have a bench with players that can just slot straight in.

Obviously you’d also then have the depth to go 4231 or 442.

Ideally you want the depth and quality to be able to mix it up depending on the opposition and if it’s home or away.

Set up more expansive when the points are there to be won, and tighter against the senior sides, for example.

No way that ASM, Wilson or AC should be risked in this game, plenty of other strong options!

The most important player in this tie, if he plays, could be Adam Armstrong.

He’ll be licking his lips at the prospect of playing against us.

Toby Mowbray “these are great tests for our young players, the likes of [Lewis] Travis, [Ryan] Nyambe and [Adam] Armstrong”

    Sounds like he’ll be playing.

I wonder if Sheffield United are going to be found out this season?

We did the double over them last season with a fairly average side. They’re no great shakes IMO.

Does anyone know why Bruce was saying he needs to pic 22 players for his squad, on his Sky interview?

I thought it was 25 man squad.

He’s referring to outfield players. 3 GKs pick themselves.

Spot on. We can also go from 433 to 4231 with that same team if we need to have more protection in defence.

I agree our midfielders are good however we could really improve those areas to push on into the top half.

On actual football, thought we were impressive on Saturday, but not impressive enough to get carried away. We were up against a team who struggled last year, and will again.

A lot to be happy with, but we will definitely get sterner tests in at least 75% of our games.

Good solid debuts, good first game.
