When takeover fever was still raging on Tyneside, Newcastle were linked with an interest in Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik in early June.
It wasn’t the first time the Polish international was on Newcastle’s radar. Back in 2015, when Milik was just 20-years-old and plying his trade at Leverkusen, he was reportedly scouted by former-Newcastle chief scout Graham Carr.
Milik is now entering the final year of his contract with Napoli and looks no closer to signing a new deal. Just after news of Newcastle’s interest resurfaced earlier in the summer, Napoli Sporting Director Cristiano Giuntoli said the following about his star striker’s contract statemate:
“The desire is to renegotiate his contract, so we are talking with his agents.
“The objective is to resolve the situation, one way or another. If he doesn’t want to remain, then he will go on to the transfer market.
“Players can remain as long as they do so with the right mentality. Napoli will go forward, with or without Milik.”
Serie A is due to kick off their new season this coming weekend, and Napoli will likely want the situation with Milik to be resolved. Early in the summer, they placed a lofty price tag of around £45m on him despite his contract situation.
Sport Witness is citing a claim from Italian newspaper Tuttosport that Napoli’s asking price has dropped significantly and Newcastle have made an approach for the 26-year-old.

The report claims Newcastle, Tottenham, and Roma are in contact with Napoli over the player. His valuation has now dropped to around £18m plus bonuses. However, there appear to be two obstacles to Milik landing on Tyneside in our opinion.
The idea made sense when Newcastle were about to be taken over by the Saudi-backed consortium. With the takeover currently off, it seems a stretch that Newcastle could persuade Milik to come to Tyneside.
There’s also the notion of Mike Ashley opening up the coffers to add a second striker at close to £20m. We don’t think Steve Bruce’s powers of persuasion are quite that mighty.
