Here is the team Steve Bruce has selected for tonight’s Carabao Cup tie against Blackburn at St James Park. It has a whopping ten changes from the 2-0 win at West Ham with Javier Manquillo the only holdover.

As Bruce declared he would during his press conference, he’s made wholesale changes for this match. It comes just three days after our opening Premier League win at the London Stadium.
This is not as strong of a team as we had hoped for but hopefully, it’ll be enough to get past Blackburn. Both Mark Gillespie and Ryan Fraser get their Newcastle debuts while Dan Barlaser is handed a surprise start in the midfield alongside Sean Longstaff.
This is who Tony Mowbray will send out for the visitors. Former Newcastle striker and local lad Adam Armstrong is on the bench to start off.

Newcastle have been handed a generous draw to advance in this competition. A win tonight will see us pitted against one of two League Two clubs in Morecambe or Oldham away next week. Let’s hope this rotated team can get the job done against Blackburn this evening.

Comment #2Barlasar is getting another chance in the starting line up tonight, if he does,nt shine against this lot then he ain`t worthy of a squad number imo.

Comment #3Apart from yedlin at right back
And Kraft at centre back
Not a bad line up
Rooting for Fraser and Linton to have good games
Hopefully Ritchie doesn’t stink up the joint

Comment #5One off the Brucey bingo full house!
Good selection aside from Manquillo, not sure why we’re asking him to play from the start again and nobody else, especially with Murphy on the bench who could come in and I’d like to see.
Ritchie at LB and Murphy on the RW with Fraser on the LW. As it is I think it will be 4-4-2 again.
Yedlin_____Krafth______Clark_____Manquillo
Fraser_____Longstaff_____Barlaser_____Ritchie

Comment #6Should be a toon win, just hope the side gets on the ball and attacks.
Looking forward to seeing Barlaser if i can find a stream….wink wink
Blackburn missing Dack and Armstrong on the bench. Travis is a good player, Holtby would imagine is still decent too.

Comment #7Odd back 4 too, although to be fair, Clarke does play CB regularly.

Comment #8Good point Hail, that one change and Murphy gets a chance, Ritchie at lb and Manquillo gets a rest.

Comment #9Happy to see Barlarsar getting the nod, playing with Sean in Midfield. But that’s a lot of changes.
I hope this doesn’t backfire, it should be good enough to get past Blackburn, well Big Joe of you don’t score against this team then, Houston we may have a problem.

Comment #10hope its a 4-3-3 with the double pivot of Longstaff and Barlaser both sitting deep and Miggy in the hole
I dont like seeing Longstaff playing out of position as an attacking midfielder
@Geordie157 it would be suicidal to play Matt Ritchie as a LB in flat back 4

Comment #11Really no need for 3 right backs in that team, forcing Manquillo to play on the left after he played so well on the right on Saturday.

Comment #33toobrother, fair point but have you not seen Manquillo at lb, not sure he’s much better there than Ritchie would be
Hope Joel scores, he’ll get stick if he doesn’t and yet again he’s being made to play out of position.
Def need one more striker bringing in.

Comment #34Do we really not have any left backs in the U23 worth a shout? Manquillo so crucial for how we play now for the weekend. He manages to stay quite healthy though so hopefully the case

The key here is that he isn’t playing a lone No 9, he actually does quite well as a paired striker as he has someone to play off closer to him and is able at times to go pick up the ball in a No 10 position
