Newcastle Subpar But Lead 1-0 Over Rovers At The Half

Newcastle started in a 4-4-2 once again with Almiron and Joelinton upfront. Matt Ritchie, taking the captain’s armband, was on the right with Ryan Fraser down the left.

It was all Blackburn to start with 80% possession in the first ten minutes. However, they did not manage to threaten Newcastle, who were content to sit back.

Lewis Holtby got away the first shot of the evening and should have given Rovers the lead. Right-back Ryan Nyambe put in a cross that found the German unmarked in the box but his effort was not on target.

After 20 minutes of awkwardness, Newcastle grew into the game a bit winning a few set pieces but nothing to threaten Thomas Kaminski in the Blackburn net. Dan Barlaser settled down and started to ping a few balls around the pitch while Almiron and Fraser started causing problems for the Blackburn defense.

Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with another debut goal from one of our new boys. Miguel Almiron gets his second assist in as many games. The Paraguayan played a ball through to Ryan Fraser who slots it away to give Newcastle the lead.

It wasn’t exactly coming, but we’ll take the lead. Here’s a look at Ryan’s first goal for Newcastle.

After a poor start, Newcastle take a slim 1-0 into halftime. Ryan Fraser has been very lively along with Miguel Almiron. Joelinton, once again, is proving that he is just not a striker. The drop from Wilson’s performance on Saturday has been astronomical.

Bruce needs to keep the lads focused to see this one out. Blackburn have not had many chances despite having over 60% possession. Tony Mowbray also has Adam Armstrong as an option on the bench.

Hopefully, the improved play to close out the half continues for Newcastle in the second. Except for a few of the performances, this has been a subpar effort thus far.

Good debut from Fraser, played really well considering how long it’s been and grafted hard too.

    Howay Murphy, make your mark.

Richie is such a passenger on the wing now just not got the pace to play in that role

Was good as a left wing back but its like a man down then you add Joelinton into the mix and its certainly lacking quality in 2 major areas

Sitting too deep again so frustrating one day our luck is going to run out

    Toonbrother,
It’s acceptable to criticise Joelinton because he’s had an entire season, picked from the start 95% of the time, to show what he can do. What we want, he can’t do. It may well not be his fault that somehow he wore No9, but a number 9 he ain’t. Therefore, he can be justly criticised. Over to you, toon.

HWA I admire your enthusiasm, but Murphy hasn’t got what it takes. There is nobody, anywhere, who can dispute this judgement with evidence to the contrary. By-bye, son, and good luck in the (non-NUFC) future.

The stats are saying we’re getting absolutely ripped about 4 or 5 separate new bum holes.

    Is this definitely the case?

Deantoon, calm down and talk sense. Arma better than Joelinton – spot on, who isn’t? As to the rest, take more water with it mate, I would kindly suggest.

I’m just going off him showing signs at Sheff Wed after lockdown and in pre-season.

He had a better goals/assists to minutes ratio than golden boy Watkins in the Champ.

Just can’t seem to do it in competitive matches for us. he should have started tonight really, to give him a fair crack, instead he’s been brought on when our backs are against the wall and we’re not playing well.

    It’s hope rather than expectation.

This is pretty much following the same path as last season the other team doing the attacking and us just parking the bus and hoping for the best

Just as well we have good defenders

Will be a similar story against Brighton unless we learn some lessons

HWA I repeat, I admire your enthusiasm, We all wish NUFC players to do well. From what I saw a season or two ago, he totally lacks the confidence to take on and beat Premier League defenders, Much as I, too, wish him well, I’m far too long in the tooth to expect him to have the personality transplant which would make him a winner. I know we’re all entitled to our opinions but I’m really struggling to see what you can advance in support of the lad. Over to you, fellow NUFC fan. HWTL
