Newcastle started in a 4-4-2 once again with Almiron and Joelinton upfront. Matt Ritchie, taking the captain’s armband, was on the right with Ryan Fraser down the left.
It was all Blackburn to start with 80% possession in the first ten minutes. However, they did not manage to threaten Newcastle, who were content to sit back.
Lewis Holtby got away the first shot of the evening and should have given Rovers the lead. Right-back Ryan Nyambe put in a cross that found the German unmarked in the box but his effort was not on target.
After 20 minutes of awkwardness, Newcastle grew into the game a bit winning a few set pieces but nothing to threaten Thomas Kaminski in the Blackburn net. Dan Barlaser settled down and started to ping a few balls around the pitch while Almiron and Fraser started causing problems for the Blackburn defense.
Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with another debut goal from one of our new boys. Miguel Almiron gets his second assist in as many games. The Paraguayan played a ball through to Ryan Fraser who slots it away to give Newcastle the lead.
It wasn’t exactly coming, but we’ll take the lead. Here’s a look at Ryan’s first goal for Newcastle.

After a poor start, Newcastle take a slim 1-0 into halftime. Ryan Fraser has been very lively along with Miguel Almiron. Joelinton, once again, is proving that he is just not a striker. The drop from Wilson’s performance on Saturday has been astronomical.
Bruce needs to keep the lads focused to see this one out. Blackburn have not had many chances despite having over 60% possession. Tony Mowbray also has Adam Armstrong as an option on the bench.
Hopefully, the improved play to close out the half continues for Newcastle in the second. Except for a few of the performances, this has been a subpar effort thus far.

Just didn’t see the point in us playing him up front our coach should be playing a youngster ahead of him or trying to get us another striker on loan as if Wilson misses games we will be in trouble

Comment #95Would like to see Murphy get another go next week along with Barlaser before making a decision
Barlaser for me looks more ready for the first team than Longstaff currently does seems like could come on for Shelvey when he tires and do a similar type of role has a great passing range

Comment #118Well you can moan about not having control of the game, or one being rusty, the other poor but let’s face facts here, Blackburn are a tough bit of opposition, as tough as we faced in the cup last season tbh, and with a second string and match – laggy legs a win is a top result and gives Bruce a nice look at what he has in reserve. We aren’t winning any cups this year, the league is our priority – and our only priority again, so this is valuable training, training you can’t get in reserve matches. Getting Fraser up and running on its own is a big box ticked.

Comment #119Cant understand why you’d play 3 CM on Saturday to play 2 unfit fringe CMs tonight.
Team selection was odd to say least and subs not much better.
Simply awful and Bruce hss no excuse, looks like he has no idea how to use asquad.
People claimed we have strength in depth, not on this showing.
