Newcastle Subpar But Lead 1-0 Over Rovers At The Half

Newcastle started in a 4-4-2 once again with Almiron and Joelinton upfront. Matt Ritchie, taking the captain’s armband, was on the right with Ryan Fraser down the left.

It was all Blackburn to start with 80% possession in the first ten minutes. However, they did not manage to threaten Newcastle, who were content to sit back.

Lewis Holtby got away the first shot of the evening and should have given Rovers the lead. Right-back Ryan Nyambe put in a cross that found the German unmarked in the box but his effort was not on target.

After 20 minutes of awkwardness, Newcastle grew into the game a bit winning a few set pieces but nothing to threaten Thomas Kaminski in the Blackburn net. Dan Barlaser settled down and started to ping a few balls around the pitch while Almiron and Fraser started causing problems for the Blackburn defense.

Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with another debut goal from one of our new boys. Miguel Almiron gets his second assist in as many games. The Paraguayan played a ball through to Ryan Fraser who slots it away to give Newcastle the lead.

It wasn’t exactly coming, but we’ll take the lead. Here’s a look at Ryan’s first goal for Newcastle.

After a poor start, Newcastle take a slim 1-0 into halftime. Ryan Fraser has been very lively along with Miguel Almiron. Joelinton, once again, is proving that he is just not a striker. The drop from Wilson’s performance on Saturday has been astronomical.

Bruce needs to keep the lads focused to see this one out. Blackburn have not had many chances despite having over 60% possession. Tony Mowbray also has Adam Armstrong as an option on the bench.

Hopefully, the improved play to close out the half continues for Newcastle in the second. Except for a few of the performances, this has been a subpar effort thus far.

Woeful but we got the win pretty much the same game as we played 90% of last season

Maybe it was because our 2nd string is poorer but that was a big worry that we still can’t handle/press a passing team and just end up sitting back all game

Well that was a shocking game to be honest but we’re through and some players who (desperately) needed minutes, got some. Just shows we’re only a couple of injuries from being a god awful team.

OP Bruce knows how desperate things can get I reckon he’s just pushing as many onto the pitch to get match practice as much as possible and he’s still trying to find his best 11. Difficult to tell I’d he’s any closer to knowing though TBF 😐

Poor match we were lucky to win, a bit of quality from Almiron and Fraser did it for us.

Think Krath will start RB on Sunday in our only change.

Will be fresher having played CB. Manquillo done a lot of running up and down again tonight.

    After watching this.

Barlaser and Gillespie passed their tests.

Longstaff worried me. Could become a victim of the trendy new 4-4-2 formation. Hasn’t had a good game at CM since his first injury and was looking like he was going to play more advanced behind the ST in a 4-2-3-1 – just not mobile enough aware of his position, got run ragged.

Still need another ST at the very least and Joelinton to go elsewhere.

Thanks for the Twitch link. Watching the match through it was my first venture into streaming and it was much appreciated.

A good result and a pity that Joelinton’s ‘goal’ was rightly chalked off

Catchy was that a master class in subtly understated game management by El Brucio?

Quick write up, Blackburn easily the better side but Brereton is woeful up front luckily.

Gillespie 7, solid debut, decent double save
Yedlin 4, awful, get rid please!!
Kraft 7, thought he did well, no nonsense display
    Clark 7, like Kraft
Manquillo 6, did alright but clearly better on the right, sign a left back on loan Brucie please as cover for Lewis
Ritchie 5, tried as usual but no influence on the game
Longstaff 4, poor, looked off the pace
Barlaser 6, got better, certainly tried hard and good range of passing
Fraser 7, offered pace and linked up well with almiron
Almiron 7, MOTM, worked hard, tracked back right up to last min when others were fading badly
Joelinton 5, needs to play out left, offered very little

Murphy 6, showed glimpses that he can be useful this season, i think he’s worth keeping
ASM 6, not involved that much
Atsu 5, hardly involved, sell him

Tough decision to make on Barlaser, on this performance, he looks like the one to keep over Sean Longstaff, will probably end up on loan but he’s certainly getting close to the making the squad.

Another striker needed, one to replace Gayle and two so Joelinton can play on the left when he plays.

Tempted to say loan out Sean though, go get Loftus-Cheek in on loan.

Understated game management it was. Brucie’s given Brighton something to think about and having done that, they’ll plan their game accordingly.

    Sheer genius on Brucie’s part.

    Geordie,
Thanks for your judgements. I must say, signing another striker, as you suggest, has to be top priority, I’m sure all fans would agree.
