Bruce Full Of Praise For New Lads But Admits Performance Was Lacking

Steve Bruce has faced the press after his team unconvincingly squeeked by Blackburn 1-0 tonight. The visitors had the lion’s share of possession but couldn’t make it count. Instead, it was one sequence of quality from the Magpies that sees us through to face Morecambe in the next round.

At the 35 minute mark, Mark Gillespie booted the ball up the pitch which ended up with Miguel Almiron. The eager Paraguayan dinked a wonderful through ball to Ryan Fraser who timed his run to perfection. The new boy then slotted the ball home for the only goal of the match.

Bruce, to his credit, was honest that his side were lucky to advance. The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder has tweeted the following comment from Bruce.

All of our new signings have now played a massive part in our winning start to this season on two fronts. Callum Wilson, Jeff Hendrick, and Jamal Lewis were outstanding in our league opening win on Saturday.

Tonight it was Ryan Fraser and Mark Gillespie who were probably our two best players in this cup win. This is what Bruce had to say about Fraser as he works his way back to full fitness.

Bruce also acknowledged how well the Gillespie played in his Newcastle debut. It was a dream night for the Geordie keeper.

Bruce has decisions to make for Brighton on Sunday but unfortunately not as many as he may have liked. Too many Magpies did not take their chances this evening.

However, Bruce will be hard-pressed when deciding on next week’s team with Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron pushing to break into his first eleven.

    Tsunki, from previous,

Alan Partridge was hilarious, and i`ve still got that series including the Irish Bloody Sunday episode.
Doubt you would get away with anything like that now, but hey, still so fkin funny.

If there’s one tactical weapon Bruce has at his disposal it’s to have a fit Carroll tenderise the defenders for 60 minutes then bring on the likes of almiron for speed to run against yellow carded and heavily bruised defenders.

    Oh by the way.

We play Morecambe in the next round this time next week.

It’s going to be a thriller, I’m sure.

Now Bruce needs to take advantage of the fact we have 2 extra days prep on Brighton as they don’t play their cup match until Thursday.

Pretty sure it will be the same team as against West Ham, with the possible exception of Krafth for Manquillo.

How many armies does it take to change a light bulb?

At least six. The Germans to start it, the French to give up really easily after only trying for a little while, the Italians to make a start, get nowhere, and then try again from the other side, the British to do most of the work, the Americans to turn up late and finish it off and take all the credit, and the Swiss to pretend nothing out of the ordinary is happening.

    Unfortunately we jinxed Watts.

After praising him for scoring Plymouth’s 2nd tonight, putting them 2-0 up, they collapsed in the 2nd half and lost 3-2.

WLtoon the problem is that humour is stifled by lack of intelligence now, as ignorant self publicisers jostle to become the next pious focal point of righteousness. Anyone with sense laughs at that Partiridge absurdity because it highlights the ludicrousness of bigoted views. It’s more powerful than simply shouting it down. Ridiculing such people is much more devastating.

Play who you like Steve but just leave Joelinton and Longstaff miles away from any action.
Got nothing against Joe personally but whoever told him he would have a successful career in football?

HWA “Pretty sure it will be the same team as against West Ham, with the possible exception of Krafth for Manquillo.”

I think you might be right, or at least a very close facsimile of the West Ham team.

People will want to see Fraser and Miggy in the line-up, but honestly with the matches coming so thick and fast if we have any desire to progress in the cups we’ll have to keep some of our attackers fresh for Morecambe.

Stick with Carroll, Wilson and ASM for Brighton.

I voted Gillespie as MoM, I thought I might be in a minority but it seems not.

A very capable performance, dominating his area and capably dealing with the shots which came his way.

I think he’s as good as if not better than Darlow, though there’s not much evidence to go on yet.

    Article from last summer:

After two years on loan at Austrian side Rapid Vienna, he has broken through this season under Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim, proving a handful for defences with powerful runs into the box.

The centre-forward has scored eight goals, and set up seven more, in 17 games, including a late equaliser off the bench in last month’s 3-3 draw at home to Lyon in the Champions League.

He also bagged a hat-trick in the 6-1 thrashing of Kaiserslautern in the German Cup first-round last August and netted twice, then set up a third goal, in this month’s 4-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

“The bloke is an animal. He’s a machine. It’s hard to stop him,” said Nagelsmann early this month after starting Joelinton nine times in 11 league games and bringing him off the bench in the other two games.”

Nagelsmann is arguably the best young coach in europe, how he saw joe and what we have got this past 12 months, its impossible to imagine its the same player.

Tsunki…….. I saw this and thought of you. Not trying to dob you in don’t worry, I’ll be responsible for any backlash. Reminded me of the Camp Harrison stuff.

The British are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats in London and have raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross”. Brits have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when Custard Cream supplies all but ran out.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout loudly and excitedly” to “Elaborate military posturing”
Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Peeed Off” to “Let’s get the Barstewards “They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide”. The only two higher levels in France are “Surrender” and “Collaborate”. The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France’s white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country’s military capability.

The Germans also increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose”.

Longstaff was looking lost in CM before Bruce arrived. I remember when it was the links to Man U that were getting the blame for his form.

It’s like his brain cannot process the action around him quick enough.

His first injury seems to have really taken a toll physically and mentally.

Fraser on the bench against Brighton for me, and given some minutes as a sub. Looks like he needs a bit more time based on tonight. Only reason for changing it would be if ASM picked up a knock.

Miggy to come of the bench against battered defences.

Can’t see why anyone would be looking to drop Hendrick. Time to change it up will come soon enough when we meet the stronger clubs and look to counter more.

If there’s a straight up decision of keeping Sean longstaff or Dan Barlaser it’s an easy choice to make for me.
