Kelland Watts was the only Magpie out on loan on display this evening in the Carabao Cup. The 20-year-old made his second straight start for Plymouth Argyle as they took on Lleyton Orient.

It was a night of highs and lows for Watts. The center-back got off the mark for his loan club with a goal in the 34th minute to put the Pilgrims ahead 2-0.

However, Lleyton Orient clawed their way back into the game with three second-half goals including one in extra time to advance to the third round.
Goalkeeper Jake Turner was on the bench for Morecambe who defeated Oldham 1-0 to become our third round opponents next week.

Comment #41Our only chance then is maybe a loan to buy with RLC. However you’re probably right he’ll be used sparingly by Lamps and never fulfil his potential.

Comment #42Hopefully he thinks better of himself and gets out. This lad has got it all I really believe that but has no chance making a dent in that Chelsea side

Comment #43I was actually impressed by Barlaser last night. Can see him making a squad if he keeps it up. As for Longstaff he looks a different player and not in a good way.

Barlaser really impressed me kinda the same way S.Lobby did when he was introduced by Rafa.
Lobby has got this season to convince me he can make it here and rubber stamp his spot and if he don’t do that then I’ll doubt he ever will.

Agreed. Think we will regret not selling him to Manure for 30m. However at the time he was playing so well and looked a future star. Maybe he’s just been Brucied lol.

Comment #50you have to remember for most of the lads last night that was the first competitive game of the season, others returning after injury or long lay offs,
i didn’t think individual performance were that bad but we lacked cohesion as a unit,

Fraser and Almiron linking up and some of Barlasers play was worth the money but Blackburn dominated us no other way to put it

Comment #60“”a thoroughly disgruntled looking Joelinton – who had just shot tamely at Kaminski – was withdrawn as Blackburn created a litany of late chances, the most inviting a Williams volley. “Joelinton’s always worked his socks off,” said Bruce. “But he’s got to dust himself down and get on with it.”””

Comment #61People talking about Almiron being played out of position. He was scouted as a No 10 but clearly played oop on the wing when he arrived. I think, from what we’ve read that Perez had decided he wanted to leave as early as that January (who could blame him the way a large swathe of fans boo’d him) and that Almiron was going to be his natural successor with a winger brought in. Also, is the only reason Ashley forked out for Almiron because he knew we’d be getting big money for Perez?

Comment #62Good morning everyone, ive been saying Joelinton is totally useless for quite a while so iam on the same page as Mund, he is just a big carthorse and should have been shipped out the door, this is the reason we really need another striker this window as if Callum Wilson gets injured we are screwed end off. Comment #63Oldgit, I wish I could say it was a pleasure, but the football was hard to watch. I think Bambams put the same stream up as me just after, too.
I do like to watch that Blackburn team, Tony Mowbray has been getting them to play some very nice football, but they were lacking a cutting edge last night, thankfully for us.
If Arma had been on from the start I doubt we’d have won that match.

Comment #67Tom, good luck to the lad – never got a look in here, must have been frustrating for him, he had a good reputation but just never looked like making it in this league, in the few opportunities he had.
His goal to game ratio must have been better than a certain Brazilian ‘striker’ I could mention, though.

Comment #68The thing which did worry me most about last night was we went into a similar pattern of play like last season
Whenever we come up against a team who can pass, move and press us we go into a mode where we defend so deep and can’t get out with Bruce unable to change it!
West Ham didn’t really pose that kind of threat but Brighton might make it very difficult for us
Hoping with Wilson up front we can get out of that mode though as we would have the counter attack with a ball over the top to get us out of trouble!
Having Joelinton play as the striker causes a lot of issues as he just loses it pretty much as soon as he gets it putting us under constant pressure

Comment #71What I liked about last night from Fraser last night was his willingness and eagerness to run into the Centre Forward channel behind Joelinton. It’s something that ASM and Miggy have done from time to time, but Fraser did it numerous times yesterday alone.
It means if we do play with one up top (Wilson, likely, Joelinton too as last night) then he can drop off, pulling a defender out of position, and Fraser will fill the gap.
It’s something we saw a lot of Fraser at Bournemouth and something I had hoped to see from him here, too. It looks like it’s something we’ll be able to look forward to.
I also think he’s a better finisher than Miggy and ASM and will get more goals than either, but they’ll not mind if their hard work ends up with more assists than it did last time round.

Think we should do a Colback and just loan him out evey season till his contract runs out. Do an option to buy just in case some mug offers around 10m for him.

Comment #73Sad to see Bruce destroying S Longstaff’s game by telling him to stay back and cover the back 4. He cannot play that role as we saw last night and many other times when our CMs are continually bypassed as if non-existent. He’s telling Barlaser to do exactly the same. Horrible to watch and we made Blackburn look like Man City.
Joelinton is just crap. No pace, weak shot, falls down too much, gives away cheap fouls, offsides, zero work rate.
If we sign another RB then we can play 4 RBs at the back. How we can only have 1 CH after just 1 game is pathetic.
On the plus side our new signings all look very promising and Fraser was a breath of fresh air. Miggy has been very good.

Comment #75I managed to watch the first 18 or so minutes of last nights game using that stream (found on Twitter) and noticed Rob had shared it earlier, from what i saw i am pleased it went off – but i should not be complaining, we won 1-0, would of taken that – but it was a difficult watch. Our whole team are so far back, not wanting to concede but to me it just encourages the opposition to keep going.
Our defence has far too much of the ball for my liking, but we cannot keep a hold of it and just tend to play counter attacking football.
I still on occasions speak to a couple of former players, they rate Bruce but agree the football is dire and far too defensive. Believe or not, it has been said before, but their take on it is ‘ good defensive players are generally cheaper than good offensive players ‘ and we go back to Ash not wanting to spend money on the more expensive players. But that seems to have changed a bit recently. Not that £35 million is anywhere near big spending and according to the craic there is a lot more in the coffers but will it be spent – i doubt it.
But those ‘SD Slazenger multi-gym systems’ are not cheap, add this to the new ice-machine, new carpet tiles and lick of paint to the training ground (decorating only finished two weeks ago) and it all adds up !

Comment #76Fraser showed that directness to go for goal which we are sometimes missing
His runs are perfect for someone like Almiron who used to play passes like to Martinez at Atalanta all the time maybe 8 or 9 times a game
Lazaro made some good runs like that when he was here in games but never received the pass ASM needs to do it more and finish better when he gets in
A front 4 of Wilson, ASM, Almiron and Fraser could be potentially awesome if they all stay fit and play together

Comment #77Last night we played with inverted wingers, to cut inside picking up the ball from the CF. Which worked for the goal, via Miggy, but not for most of the game. Joelinton seems to favour carrying the ball into space, which he usually finds on the left hand side and is where his two shots on target came from. Unfortunately he is struggling to make those attributes work for him in the middle of the field, or only deeper, when away from the attention of centre backs.

Just seems to need too many touches on the ball as well

Comment #79I do not see why people want to see Saun Longstaff played as a #10, he does not have the technical ability. He has been succesful as an attacking midfielder as a consequence of his youth and energy, doing lots of running, intercepting and being the ‘Jonny on the spot’ when it comes to goals. He is more naturally a central midfielder but needs to curb the youthful enthusiasm to just follow the ball all over the pitch. His best game was against ManU when he had the responsibility of man marking Pogba, this restricted his inclinations and should be a lesson for him.

Comment #80Linton is turning out to be one of the clubs worst buys ever, he’s literally a waste of a squad space in any position – club should try and sell him and get whatever they can for him – problem is that nobody will pay his current wages so likely we’ll be stuck with him for four more years 🙁
