Top Liverpool Defender Showers Praise On Steve Bruce For His Development

Newcastle were after Andrew Robertson, before he was signed by Liverpool from Hull City, in the summer of 2017.

Robertson has since gone on to become one of the best fullbacks in the Premier League.

Of course at the time, Newcastle were dallying and dallying, as usual,  about whether to sign him or not, and the chance was lost.

How many times has that happened under owner Mike Ashley?

Tottenham forward Dele Alli comes to mind.

Robertson was signed by Steve Bruce from Dundee United in 2014, when Bruce was the Hull City manager.

And Robertson has plenty of praise for the current Newcastle boss in his new book ‘Now You’re Gonna Believe Us‘.

Here’s what Robertson has said about Bruce (shown above with Robertson) , as reported in the Daily Star today:

“Some managers have a knack of saying the right thing at the right time to get you to respond in the right way,”

“Klopp is obviously like that and another is Bruce, who was a big influence on me at Hull City. This time, as manager of Newcastle, he wouldn’t be giving me any motivational speeches to spur me on.”

“‘Hey Robbo, any chance you could stop running?!’ I turned around and there he was, grinning from ear to ear.”

“I couldn’t stop myself from bursting out laughing. ‘Sorry gaffer,’ I said, before launching the ball up the line and racing forward to join the attack.”

“He played such an important role in my career, bringing me into English football with Hull City and helping me improve my game to such a level that a club like Liverpool ended up signing me.”

“Hull came in for me when I was at Dundee United and, to be honest, English football scared me a bit at that time but Steve convinced me, telling me I was definitely good enough and that he would look after me.”

“I genuinely think that if he had not been so positive and encouraging, I would have stayed in Scotland.”

“Some managers have that ability to get you on board just through their own integrity and Steve definitely falls into that category.”

Steve Bruce has signed a number of top players in his time, who have gone on to become big stars.

He also signed center-back Harry Maguire from Sheffield United for Hull at the exact same time he signed Robertson.

Maguire has gone on to become an England regular and captain of Manchester United and was a Newcastle target under Rafa Benitez.

We hope Steve Bruce can do the same thing at Newcastle,  as he did at Hull, and certainly his transfer business for Newcastle this summer has been simply superb.

We have a much better squad now than when he arrived at a Newcastle club in complete chaos a year last July,

“An ultracrepidarian (19th century) is one who consistently holds forth on a subject they know nothing about.

“…there is also a verb for it: to venture far beyond your understanding is to ‘ultracrepidate’.”
