Steve Bruce made ten changes for our 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Blackburn on Tuesday. It wasn’t an easy watch as the visitors asked most of the questions.
But it’s a win, and after last season, getting a result after a poor performance is nothing new. Though it was a disappointment coming on the heels of the outstanding win at West Ham.
While a few of the performances were lacking, there were some good displays to get excited about. Ryan Fraser looked inspired to play in the black and white shirt. He got the game-winner on his debut in his first match since March.
Ciaran Clark made a triumphant return from his ankle injury. He was very solid at the back partnering with Emil Krafth, who put in an admirable performance as well.
Miguel Almiron notched another assist with his deft reverse pass to Fraser. Bruce has a decision to make for Brighton on Sunday. Will he stick with a Callum Wilson and Andy Carroll partnership? Or go with Miggy as the number 10 behind Wilson.
Then there’s the returning Geordie, Mark Gillespie, who claimed a clean sheet on his Newcastle debut. The 28-year-old was not offered a contract twelve years ago as a teenager but returned this summer.
Mark put in an inspired performance playing for his hometown club. Our readers have selected him as the top Magpie. He joins Jeff Hendrick as the second new signing to win our poll as the Man of the Match.
