Newcastle were recently linked with Bologna right-back Takahiro Tomiyasu. The interest in the 21-year-old was confirmed by local reports.
Newcastle are currently trying to trim their squad of excess players. Of which they have quite a few at the moment. That’s definitely the case at right-back where there are three on the books.
DeAndre Yedlin is the odd man out and it’s suspected he will be moved on this summer. He finds himself behind Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth while entering the final year of his contract.
Even if Yedlin gets moved, adding another right-back this window seems unlikely. Bruce recently stated it wasn’t ‘healthy’ to have three at the club. Though Newcastle really seem to like Tomiyasu.
Sport Witness have cited a report from Columbia that Newcastle, Wolves, and Everton are interested in Atletico Madrid’s Santiago Arias (pictured above).
Like Newcastle, Atletico have three right-backs on the books with Arias now deemed to be surplus. The Colombian is reportedly available for just over £14m though, at 28, we can’t see Newcastle making a permanent move for him. Especially when the younger Tomiyasu could be snatched for just a little bit more.
Arias joined Atletico Madrid two years ago from Eindhoven but last season made only 18 appearances. He finds himself behind Croatian international Sime Vrsaljko and former Spurs right-back Kieran Trippier.
Arias has 53 caps for Colombia and could strengthen the right-back position. However, he’s been heavily linked with a move to Everton to join fellow Colombian James Rodriguez.
We just don’t think a right-back is on the cards for this summer though either Tomiyasu or Arias would be solid additions.

A fact: if you read rumours that your club are interested in signing a player, and the purported transfer doesn’t happen, it does not automatically mean that your club has failed in their attempt to sign said player. The vast majority of rumours are rubbish or complete guesswork.

Comment #5Not sure it’s a worthwhile move. We have 3 competent right-backs, no point bringing someone in who isn’t really a significant upgrade. Not sure Arias is much better than what we have.

Comment #6Chuckleworthy assessment that Mike would only clear a paltry £25-30m on the Saudi takeover. Even the £90m is a very simplistic take on how much actual money by various means Mike has made from the club.
The “Interest free loan” is a lodging of his own cash which in actuality has been highly likely to have been paid back in profit and earnings years and years ago. It’s a mule to keep the books afloat and the amount of money that has gone sideways in affiliated Ashley concerns and thereby enriching him by other means, merchandising, advertising, lovely company dividends etc will have more than alleviated the discomfort of having to use the club as a non-interest bank. If it didn’t he would simply have raised the cash elsewhere and let the club revenue pay the interest and he could keep his own money invested elsewhere with interest – he obviously makes appreciable gains to justify foregoing bank interest on that money hence why he put it in.
No, when Mike takes his £90m profit out that will just be a tiny little cherry on a massive, ever-giving cake he has been devouring for over a decade. If NUFC had been no more than a break even millstone around his neck he would have pulled the plug and dismantled us and sold us to a scaffolding firm to take us into league one years ago. No doubt about that.

Comment #11Some fans can not handle the fact that we as fans of Newcastle United and the owner Mike Ashley are adjoined in the same battle.
All these years has corrupted a lot of fans way of thinking and anything mentioning the owner has to be a negative it can never be a positive.
Mike Ashley thinks little of us fans and has treated us as much for 13 years. That’s a fact.
But for once in these 13 years our ambitions are aligned and we want new owners to be born into a new era and Ashley wants out like never before.
Someone’s you have to look past your anger and frustration to see

You mean Ashley wants £92M as there are uncertain times ahead financially for the club, league and the retail industry. Yes we are conveniently aligned but if he were so adamant that he wanted what was best for the club, there are plenty of alternatives.

Like what? Let’s not forget I’m saying this time not mentioning any other time.
He wants rid it’s a simple as that and some fans can’t believe or see it.
Even when it’s unheard of with a premier league partner calling out the organisation and naming masters as the incompetent fool, fans still can’t see or will believe his agenda now lines with ours.
Think what you want of him and I’ll agree but one thing I will say is he is a ruthless businessman who doesn’t give up easy.
That statement was a war cry nothing more nothing less

If Yedlin’s off to Turkey on free, there’ll be quite a saving on getting him off the payroll. Asking a fee might be a step too far.

It’s a good point but we’ll have to wait and see if we don’t end up covering a chunk of his wages anyway. There’s not a huge amount of money going around Turkish football at the moment.

You may well be right but even getting some of his wages off the payroll’s better than paying for an overhead that’s a liability.
We can but wait.
