The race is on for Newcastle to offload their fringe players. Thus far, they’ve only managed to find season-long loans for Florian Lejeune and Yoshinori Muto. With just 12 days left in the window, the club need to shift a handful more.
The Northern Echo is reporting that Bruce is hoping to offload DeAndre Yedlin, Dan Barlaser, Christian Atsu, and Jacob Murphy within the next week. However, it appears that all four will be making the trip to Morecambe this afternoon.
Yedlin has been strongly linked with a move to Besiktas over that past week. It was reported that he wasn’t involved in first-team training as Newcastle tried to reach an agreement with the Turkish club for the American.
The following comments from Bruce may shed some light on what is going on behind the scenes at Newcastle as they work to move some fringe Magpies:
“I have to try to work on the size of the squad because we can’t just keep collecting players. We’ve got five or six training with the Under-23s, and that’s not healthy at all for anybody.
“That (moving players out) has to be a big part of the remit between now and the end of the window. We’ve brought in some really good additions to the squad, and at the moment, only two have gone. So, we have to try to make room.
“It’s always a difficult one. If you remember last year, (Jack) Colback and (Henri) Saivet missed out (on the squad), and if you look at somebody like Jack, he’s playing regularly now for Notts Forest.
“There are always difficult decisions to be made, and I’ve gone on record to say that two or three players, in particular, need to go and get fixed up somewhere and find a new home if they can. It’s not healthy that they’re training with the Under-23s.
“I’m not sending them down there as a punishment, it’s just that we want to work with a certain number, and once your numbers start to get towards 28, it’s very difficult. We don’t want to work with that number – if possible, we want to work with 20 outfield players every day.”
So Bruce has sent some of the squad to train with the U23s to narrow the numbers at the training session. This could also serve as extra motivation for them to find new clubs.
What happened last season with Saivet, Colback, and Jamie Sterry spending the year at Newcastle without a squad number needs to be avoided this year if at all possible.
It won’t be difficult to move Jacob Murphy or Dan Barlaser out on loan. However, both are in the final year of their contracts and Newcastle could be hoping to get a fee for both of them.
Bruce suggests that their could be no more signings if new clubs aren’t found for these fringe players. However, we appear to be close to two signings at the moment. Though neither may have an impact this year.
The Sun’s Alan Nixon is reporting in an exclusive that we are close to signing Deportivo Municipal playmaker Rodrigo Vilca for £120k, which seems a low fee compared to other reports.
Sport Witness is claiming that French triallist Florent Indalecio is impressing on Tyneside and could be offered a contract.
Bruce is likely hoping for more than just those two when talks about additions. The squad could use another striker and a versatile defender. However, it appears, he’s been told that space must be made before any more are brought in.

Comment #1No surprise at all to see St Maximins injury is not bad at all. We all know he checked out of that game after getting dominated by young Lamptey.
He needs to put in a performance or two to gain back respect after that.

Comment #2We have a top 12 squad on paper, with Bruce it’s relegation dogfight.
Effin dinosaur needs to go, he can keep being polite and Effin bigging up the opposition all he likes, he is shocking.
Unfortunately no manager in their right mind would come unless ashley has sold, not going to happen.
We will be the new Leeds, going down under Bruce and no hope on the horizon
Happy Wednesday

Comment #3Never been so disinterested in transfer news about us before. I don’t even care who comes in.
Bruce is so bad and clueless about how modern football works, we can have lewandowski upfront but will be made to look joelinton.
Freaking 442 bloody dinosaur. Its going to be a long season. Rather save the money and hire a new young manager.

Very insightful read on carr, we’ve always scouted ggod players. My problem has always been why the club buys the players it does. According to Mark Douglas after we finished 5th carr wanted to kick on and urged moves for kevin gamiero and blaise matuidi and told the club to pay whatever it takes to get Rafael varane to Newcastle. The scouting reports on riviere said he had neither the noise or ability to hit the ground running and urged a move for Alexandre lacazette who was available for 15 million. We were quoted just over 10 million for luke Shaw when he first broke into the Southampton first team, but the club baulked at both deals and bought riviere and haidara instead as they represented better value for money.

Comment #5Maximin should not start against Spurs, for both his ongoing niggling injury and ducking out.

Comment #7whilst i get Aarons, Lazaar and Saivet are on good money, so can see why they would be happy to run down contracts.
Aarons is 24, surely even with an agent in his ear, he should be chomping at the bit to find a club and play regular football. I thought he’d have gone a while back, dropped down to league one and been a good championship player by now.

Comment #8That squad under Pardew was potentially the beginning of something. With a relatively small spend we could have bought some quality to keep us up challenging for Europe consistently, instead they spent nowt and the chances was wasted.
Ashley just has no clue about how to run a football club. If he’d invested twenty million then, he could be looking to sell for £500 million now.

Comment #9Is anyone else here worried about the Spurs game at the weekend? I’m afraid that if Lewis can’t play because of that injury, we face the idea of having Krafth playing up against Son which will just be horrible to watch.

Comment #10After the Burnley match its clear to me that it doesn’t matter who we buy because Bruce can not get us playing as a team.. And that’s why last season it was all down to Saint Max on his own most the time.
