Steve Bruce is getting a lot of plaudits for coming out against the stupidities of VAR, even through the weird decision in added time yesterday at Spurs gave us a point, which was undeserved.
Steve talks about what VAR was for, and how it has veered off track and must be fixed.
Those are good and sensible points made by the Newcastle manager.

Comment #1Mund – from previous – for goodness sake mate it’s only a game and a bit of fun. I was playing against Jail in the H2H bit he still gave me some good advice. I bet you were the type of kid who tipped the board up if you were losing 🙂

Yes that rotation is a positive. Good teams have way more than 11 players who feel they are directly involved and match ready.
On rules being around for hundreds of years. Well, just no. The game has been adapted hundreds of times.

Comment #5How many times did big teams get the right call, Ed? I’d argue we’ve been relegated, twice, because of certain unfair calls.
Bring on var.
But keep fixing it till they get it right. Needs work (E.g. now ref approaches the screen himself.)

Comment #6Cyprus…..just to add to the negatives.Since 1998 when brucie managed Sheffield United up to now in 2020 when he is Head coach of Nufc he has learned nothing its still the same lack of tactics, dame excuses, and so on .

Comment #7Did anyone else notice after Wilson scored the Penalty that Carroll seemed to hit his arm against Wilson way overly aggressive as he went in for an embrace, you could even hear the slap it made on tv and for a split moment you could tell by Wilson that he was annoyed and didnt like it, almost like Carroll was pissed at him for not letting him take the penalty initially before Bruce stepped in.
Carroll then kinda knew he shouldn’t have done that and quickly pulled Wilson in for a full embrace to kinda brush over it.
It seemed very very odd to me. Am I just imagining this or what because I dont think I am. Watch it again on YouTube just after he scores the penalty.

In the US, video assistance has been around since the early eighties!
The tennis controversy was ended by hawk eye.
Technology, one way or another, will keep “intruding” and helping the poor, mortal referee. If you’ve ever refereed you will know that many times, even with the best of intentions, you ask yourself, “what the hell happened there”?
Think about offside. The linesman need four eyes and two of them must be thirty yards away from his head 🙂

Comment #11Martoon your 100% right I was one of those kids. I hate losing and I hate being allowed to win. End of the day it’s H2H one vs the other and Dubai wouldn’t it had Vardy in and his points if it wasn’t for jail.
Do you realise he changed the game? Like I said don’t want to go on about it just answering you but it should be I choice alone imo I’m playing Dubai not jail

Maybe. I’ll be honest, I haven’t been concentrating on Bruce’s career before NUFC.
Only thing in his defence, he hasn’t exactly managed Barca and failed.

Mourinho, to his credit, said he admired these coaches because they’re fighting in a different league.
And you know what big Sam said.
Would you have a good record with Messi et al in their prime? We’ll never know 🙂 but I’d bet on you winning more games than losing, no matter what you did 😉
Scouting is so important, especially for smaller teams… It’s not just the coach, though he does play his role, granted.

Comment #22Cyprus…..I genuinely believe if brucie manage Barcelona with Messi in his prime he wouldn’t win the league or get near it .
Managers like him and big Sam ,Pulis etc have a level thats why they will never get the opportunities at bigger clubs .
Yes Scouting is important but what’s the point in having good players if you dont no what to do with them .

Comment #24Still thinking about that penalty, there’s no way it should’ve stood but what’s done is done.
The FA will have to change that rule like yesterday, every striker will be aiming at a defenders arm everytime they’re in the box. I’m just wondering if they decide to change that rule immediately could they take our penalty away? I mean we hadn’t had one shot at goal, posed absolutely no threat. I’ve seen decisions being changed after a game joey barton i think was punished after video evidence a while back if it’s gonna happen it would definitely happen to us.

Comment #25Be interesting to see where we are at by the time the window closes we are still needing 2 or 3 players to have a competent squad
Newcastle never seem to look at what business other teams are doing but I would be wary of teams like Villa, Palace and Leeds who are improving their squads with the signings they are making
We have just done enough business to stand still under Bruce we need a quality midfielder at Kante level who can do the job of 2 midfielders to be able to work under Bruces tactics

Comment #26Morning all, the morning after the night before, a full day of football and some strange results ,including ours.
How poor were we, our performance looked out of place in the PL, 4 games with 8 teams involved yesterday and we looked out of our depth, because of Bruce.
We have better players than that performance suggests.
The dinosaur has to go, and sharpish.

Comment #27Mund, all i went on was having Aguero on the bench, that was it, i didn’t know you could still sell them out. It was my decision to buy vardy, he was my second choice too, I wanted someone else but they were 100k too much, he was my second choice.
You’ll win the return fixture – I was at home.

You would have lost anyway even if he had Aguero on the bench 😀 in fact you would have lost against about 17 other players this week with that measly score of yours 😀

Comment #31Bruces comments on the penalty were= Its total nonsense, its ruining the spectacle, that part was correct and honest. But Bruce there was no spectacle all because of you sending our club out to play the most embarrassing negative boring football ive seen for many a day, Bruce and spectacle are not part of the same universe, the man is a born loser, way way out of his depth in modern football, he is a throwback to the way football was played in the seventies and eighties, even though we all love Newcastle with all our hearts, its become an endurance test watching our club play under this dinosaur who is belong to a bygone world in my opinion.

Comment #32Well, that was hilarious, then
😉
I didn’t watch the game so can’t speak about the performance generally, but from what’s been said it was pretty poor. That needs to change, it seems we’ve learned no lessons from the last 12 months and this is becoming a concern.
However, this game is a 90-minute team game, with no points awarded for merit. Therefore, as an integral part of our team, Darlow is as important as any striker and by playing a blinder for over 90 minutes, he kept us in a position to get something from the game. Full credit to him.
Also, having had apparently no service all match, Wilson had to step up with tired legs and bury that penalty, so full credit to him too.
As for the penalty, the rules have changed. Fans can carp on about what’s right or wrong, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is how consistently rules are applied. VAR is a tool designed to ensure that consistency, so should be welcomed.
As far as the rules are concerned, Dier’s arm was out at an unnatural angle and blocked the flight of the ball, therefore it was a penalty. This has been the rule in Europe for a couple of years, so its nothing new. Is it right? No, but it is what it is for now.
If the rule is changed, then fine, people can complain about it being a ridiculous decision, but they won’t change it this season, otherwise consistency is impossible. Imagine if in the return fixture the roles are reversed but because the rules have changed, Kane’s header against Lascelle’s arm is waved off and we win 1-0. That would be a worse injustice than anything we’ve seen so far.
So, we stayed in the game, we took our chance where Spurs squandered theirs, we won a point and we move on, hopefully with some better play next time out.
