Last week Newcastle were reported to have an interest in Juventus center half Daniele Rugani. Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that Newcastle could make a move for the 26-year-old, who has become surplus at the 9-time defending Serie A champions.
Rugani made just 10 league appearances last season. In the first two matches of this campaign, Rugani has yet to get onto the pitch despite Juve boss Andrea Pirlo playing with three central defenders.
The former Italian international’s name has resurfaced on Wednesday as a potential target for Newcastle. Sport Witness is citing a claim from Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla that Newcastle are about to launch a loan bid for Rugani in the next few days.
Newcastle are looking for another center-back and almost secured a year-long loan for Arsenal’s Rob Holding earlier in the window. However, Gunner’s boss Mikel Arteta nixed the deal which left Newcastle scrambling to find another body in defense.
While we currently have five players who can play center-back, both Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett are out injured while Fabian Schar just made his season debut at Newport on Wednesday.
For whatever reason, Newcastle have been left short at center half since last season culminating in right-back Emil Krafth and midfielder Isaac Hayden having to provide cover at the position far too often.
According to Pedulla, Newcastle are preparing to make an offer for Rugani with an option to buy. Juventus recently turned down a straight loan bid from Valencia for the defender.
There are no specifics in the report as far as what the future fee would be or if Juventus would consider such a proposal. However, if Newcastle can get the Italian in on loan it would be some excellent business this late in the window.
