Newcastle Hang On To End First Half 1-1 Against Manchester United

After getting an early goal, Newcastle were put under pressure for much of the first half by Manchester United. The half ended level with a goal a piece but the visitors had the bulk of possession and chances.

Newcastle started the match in a 4-1-4-1 with Isaac Hayden sitting behind Jeff Hendrick and Jonjo Shelvey in the midfield. Joelinton was on the right and Allan Saint-Maximin on the left.

The Magpies got off to a very fortunate start with an early counter leading to a goal. Emil Krafth’s 2nd-minute cross was knocked into the net by a sliding Luke Shaw to give Newcastle the lead.

Manchester United enjoyed a bunch of possession after the opening goal but couldn’t create any decent chances to test Karl Darlow until after the 20-minute mark.

Bruno Fernandes had a nice strike disallowed due to VAR ruling Juan Mata offside. The disappointment was short-lived as the Red Devils found an equalizer a few minutes later.

Harry Maguire surged forward to beat Federico Fernandez to a corner in the 23rd minute. His header bounced past a diving Darlow and into the far corner.

Allan Saint-Maximin forced David de Gea into a diving save in the 29th minute. The Frenchman cut inside from the right and launched a shot that de Gea had to parry away. The Spaniard hit the post with his right arm and needed treatment but was able to continue.

Manchester United kept the pressure on Newcastle and forced Karl Darlow into action. Darlow had an excellent punch on a cross and then saved another from Aaron Wan-Bissaka that looked to be going in. On the subsequent corner, Jamaal Lascelles cleared a shot off the line.

Darlow continued his outstanding goalkeeping with another terrific save. This time from Marcus Rashford whose 43rd-minute shot bounced right in front of Darlow as he went down to make the save. He was able to swat it away to keep the match level going into halftime.

40-45pt seasons in perpetuity, with a churn of players, unless takeover occurs.

Awful performance all round. Just what we deserve. Bruce has alot to answer. No idea what the tactic or strategy was today.

No WAY ASM would have signed a 6 Yr contract if it meant to be playing under Bruce.

Presumably not taking off the injured Darlow will let Bruce blame him for not keeping out their last two goals..

Fcuking Bruce, scared to play an attacking formation, sorry but a little while ago you were talking about this new 4-4-2 set up we now have.
Playing Hendricks, looked lost, big Jo looked lost, why Miggy and Fraser are sitting on the bench is crazy.

Leave it to us to make a shocking man utd team look good, when it was blatantly obvious we should of been putting the pressure on them, not let them stroll around freely all game.. I’ve really lost my patience with Bruce.. How thick can he be to not to see this man utd where there for the taking… I actually knew it was gonna be a bad game when we took the lead because we would go to everyone behind the ball and hoof it to Wilson or expect Saint Max to dribble the length of the pitch

Only a compete idiot would mess with the good thing ASM and Joe had going last time out – they linked and interchanged so well with Joe starting from the LW and ASM through the middle with lots of fluidity between them.

Throw a trio of midfielders together where none know their roles.

Keep punting it long due to an inability to coach how to handle a press.

Disjointed from the off because of Bruce trying to prove he can be a tinker man, but he didn’t come up smelling of roses, that was a stinker, man.

We have a good squad and it’s been wasted.

“We knew Man Utd were going to come out on the front foot after a bitter defeat.”

“It was 1-1- at half-time, and we were still in the game until the latter stages”.

“Sometimes individual quality changes a game”.

“Leaking three goals late in a game shows that attacking Man Utd is a bad idea”.

    “We regroup and go again”.

I reckon that should just about cover it for Bruce.

    Yup.

Bruce showing them far too much respect because A) he has a soft spot for them and B) he’s stuck in the past and bases their credentials on historical reputation rather than their recent form.

Should have been up and at them, pressing a fragile defence, high energy.

    Dour stuff.
