Newcastle Hang On To End First Half 1-1 Against Manchester United

After getting an early goal, Newcastle were put under pressure for much of the first half by Manchester United. The half ended level with a goal a piece but the visitors had the bulk of possession and chances.

Newcastle started the match in a 4-1-4-1 with Isaac Hayden sitting behind Jeff Hendrick and Jonjo Shelvey in the midfield. Joelinton was on the right and Allan Saint-Maximin on the left.

The Magpies got off to a very fortunate start with an early counter leading to a goal. Emil Krafth’s 2nd-minute cross was knocked into the net by a sliding Luke Shaw to give Newcastle the lead.

Manchester United enjoyed a bunch of possession after the opening goal but couldn’t create any decent chances to test Karl Darlow until after the 20-minute mark.

Bruno Fernandes had a nice strike disallowed due to VAR ruling Juan Mata offside. The disappointment was short-lived as the Red Devils found an equalizer a few minutes later.

Harry Maguire surged forward to beat Federico Fernandez to a corner in the 23rd minute. His header bounced past a diving Darlow and into the far corner.

Allan Saint-Maximin forced David de Gea into a diving save in the 29th minute. The Frenchman cut inside from the right and launched a shot that de Gea had to parry away. The Spaniard hit the post with his right arm and needed treatment but was able to continue.

Manchester United kept the pressure on Newcastle and forced Karl Darlow into action. Darlow had an excellent punch on a cross and then saved another from Aaron Wan-Bissaka that looked to be going in. On the subsequent corner, Jamaal Lascelles cleared a shot off the line.

Darlow continued his outstanding goalkeeping with another terrific save. This time from Marcus Rashford whose 43rd-minute shot bounced right in front of Darlow as he went down to make the save. He was able to swat it away to keep the match level going into halftime.

    Why are people thinking we can go from relegation fodder to beating Utd? We got assaulted by Brighton ooooh they’ve got Harry Potter rays manager play good football. It’s BRIGHTON FFS, they are the teams we should beat. I’m confident we will win 1 more game this year.

    At least we have the better stats
    We score one goal in two minutes
    It takes them 96 minutes to score three, that’s only one in very 33 minuted

    Yippee

    Darlow played great until his injury. Groin?
    Hendrick = passenger.
    Joelinton = passenger.
    Fraser = on too late.
    Almiron = does Bruce even KNOW he’s in the team?

    If this doesn’t prove that Bruce is a dinosaur of a football coach, nothing does.
    Totally useless!!!

    Got to sack Bruce after that performance. Shouldn’t be losing to Man Utd at home. Almiron should be starting every game. Schar was miles better than Hayden in the second half. Could get relegated this season. Krafth and Lascelles are awful. Bruce needs to go.

    Bruce could not make a decision to replace an injured goalkeeper and paid for it. What a joke. We can’t defend, we can’t attack. We can barely play a recognizable form of football.

    Yedlin should be starting. Gives us more of an attacking threat down the right. Don’t rate Lewis. Willems was much better. We need a whole new midfield and another 2 strikers plus a left and right back.

    Poor performance. Poor selection. Given Man U’s troubles so far, we should have been at them and pressing from the off.

    Darlow superb. Didn’t deserve to have conceded 4 against his name. A few of ours ran out of steam which cost us, but a lot of that was caused by our set up today.

    BBC Web site had a heat map visual.

    Our penalty box was red
    Theirs was green

    Bruce doesn’t know that’s where goals are mostly scored to win matches

    Sheffield Wednesday are bottom of the Championship. Lasting legacy there.

    When so many of our usually-reliable players ( ASM, Wilson, Linton, Hayden ) ALL have poor games, its definitely the formation that’s at fault

    Defending for our lives against a shi* manu team.

    Bruce really needs to look at a hard look at himself. No Premier league club will ever look at him after us. He’ll be lucky to get a job in the championship.

    With Manure there for the taking and Bruce sets us up scared sh1tless! Then when he could change it up with Hayden injured he brings on Schar and goes extra defensive! Useless twat! Darlow injured no worries he can continue for another 20 mins.

    The last 3 goals were nowt to do with Darlow being injured. Great finishes, sloppy defending and tired legs failing to track back and work.

    Needed to get fresh legs in the centre of the park at about 60 minutes, and we didn’t.

    They sometimes say Bruce is a great man manager. Well he certainly ISN’T a football manager.
    I want to hear his excuse for not at least bringing Almiron on sooner.

    Bruce is a clueless manager no tactics wrong selection no formation no shape players running around like headless chickens and it shows that they don’t even know what they must do on the pitch. I can tell you one thing under Benitez this wouldn’t of happened the players kept there shape and knew there responsibility. Makes me upset watching my team play like this under an idiot of a manager we have BRUCE OUT!!!!!

    The game was crying for miggy in for hendricks and Fraser in for joelinton at 60 mins so we could push on.

    Bruce: let me put fraser in at 78 and miggy at 88….
