Steve Bruce has given his press conference this morning ahead of Sunday’s match at Wolves. One of the first questions out of the gate was the status of goalkeeper Karl Darlow after his injury last weekend.
Reports this week claimed that Darlow has not suffered anything serious and is available for Wolves. Bruce doesn’t quite go that far but he does confirm that Karl’s injury is just a knock. Here is what Bruce said about Darlow according to Newcastle’s Twitter account:
“Karl Darlow is still sore but he’s made a huge improvement from Saturday. It’ll go down to the wire [for Sunday] and we’ll see how he is. Thankfully it’s an impact injury and there’s no tear.”
Darlow reportedly suffered a pelvic bone bruise in his collision with Marcus Rashford on Saturday. The 30-year-old soldiered on but was visibly not right for the remainder of the game. If he can’t make it on Sunday, then Mark Gillespie will get his Premier League debut.
Here is some more of what Bruce said about his in-form goalkeeper:
“He’s waited patiently for his chance and he’s done very well. We hope he can make it but we’ve brought Mark Gillespie and he’s done well in the cup competitions. We have to see what the next 48 hours bring. Mark is ready if he has to make his PL debut.”
It seems like it will be touch and go for Darlow to make the trip to Molineux. If he’s not ready then he really shouldn’t be risked. Mark Gillespie can fill in with Dan Langley coming in as the backup.
