Miguel Almiron won’t feature for Paraguay tomorrow when they take on Bolivia in their next 2022 World Cup qualifier. The midfielder was outstanding in Paraguay’s 1-1 draw at Argentina last week before receiving a late yellow card that made him ineligible for Tuesday’s match.
Almiron has started the last three matches for Newcastle in a deeper midfield role as Steve Bruce experimented with a 5-3-1-1 formation. With him not playing tomorrow, he should be fresh for Saturday’s match against Chelsea.
There are some interesting comments coming out of Paraguay from Miguel’s agent Daniel Campos. The agent told a Paraguayan radio station that Atletico Madrid was interested in Almiron, though a bid was never made. He also stated that but for Covid-19, Miguel would be plying his trade elsewhere.
Here are the comments as published in The Chronicle:
“Miguel Almirón was being observed by Atletico Madrid but no offer was made. When everything returns to normal, Miguel will take a leap in quality.
“Miguel’s work rate at Newcastle and Paraguay has been great. If it wasn’t for the pandemic, he would’ve been elsewhere. Perhaps he would like to play on a team that has a lot of possession. Maybe in June, he’ll make that jump.”
While these comments seem explosive, there’s been no offers for Almiron just yet. When he signed with Newcastle in January of 2019, he signed a five-and-a-half year deal so there’ll still be three years left on the contract next summer.
Miggy has been the consummate professional at Newcastle. Despite undergoing a rough patch last season before bagging his first goal, he’s always had the right attitude.
There could be some frustration on Miguel’s part with the playing style under Bruce. That’s definitely understandable as it’s been a ‘work in progress’ since Bruce took the helm.
However, he’s very popular with his teammates, and Bruce has raved about coaching him. We don’t see him pushing for a move. However, if an offer does come in that suits both him and the club, that could a different story.

Comment #206The premier league are up themselves I don’t expect any answer.
I think whatever comes off it we will see what there stance is. It will show if they are worried or not about the legal case. If they don’t provide an answer and fob it off then they are definitely not taking it seriously but if they do provide one that makes me think they are concerned.
Time will tell

Comment #220hibbit I think it’s fair to say the whole team is going backwards and has done since Bruce’s arrival.
18 months to not even implant his own ideas is ridiculous and wouldn’t be stood for in any professional manner anywhere.
What makes it worse he has took 18 months to go round and round and then revert back to the old formation the previous boss played.
But don’t worry lads and lasses we are all delusional it’s all in our heads….

Comment #224You have to wonder what Bruce’s goals are. Does he genuinely want to be more than a perennial lower end of the table manager and simply doesn’t have the minerals to be anything other than that.
Alternatively does he deludedly think he is a good coach who just hasn’t had the breaks in the last 22 years and it’s always someone or something other than him who has prevented him achieving any notable success.
Say what you like about the previous manager but he challenged the status quo of players just using us a stepping stone. Now the whole mindset seems to have reverted to exactly that. Bruce is the biggest patsy of the lot. Desperately out of his depth and playing a style only he can hazard a guess at what that is exactly.
Oh the irony of having wide boy Ash as a fit and proper owner who couldn’t have been more negligent in his treatment of NUFC, when people of real ambition and integrity are stopped in their tracks by a corrupt and totally devoid of morals PL.
If Ashley, Charnley and Bruce are set to stay I won’t worry about the future, because there won’t be one.

Comment #225Both Alex and Steve Bruce need to get with the times. We are led by a social media ran world and there’s no escape from it.
But the worst if it is there’s no smoke without fire and I’m sick of pundits and others telling this fan base he is doing a good job, we should be happy where we are blah blah blah.
But it’s a vicious circle as other pundits must listen to other pundits talking like they do and just jump on the band wagon for the sake of it as they are all clueless in there assessment about this club and our frustrations as a fan.

Nailed it in your 2nd to last paragraph.
I’m more upset that Ashley has been allowed to let the club stagnate with no real maintenance of ground and training facilities but its the Saudis who arent fit n proper.
YCMIU
A owner who has no interest in the club he owns is seen as more preferable than 1 who wants to progress the club and area on and off the pitch..
The mind boggles and its no surprise as many call the Epl and Masters corupt

Comment #232I did think Almiron would potentially stay with his national team, why rush back to play out of position in a side with no decreeable tactics, be humiliated and no doubt turned on by a certain section of the fans.

Comment #234Almiron needs to leave. He’s too good for us and would be better in a better team. Hes right though. He needs to playing in an attacking side with more possession. He’s not fulfilling his strengths in this team. Was far more attacking and threatening for Atlanta. He seems afraid to shoot from long range here.
