It’s an expected result at St. James’ Park with Newcastle falling to Chelsea. The second half was slightly better but once again the Magpies created very few chances and lose 2-0 for a second time running.
Newcastle emerged from the tunnel making one change with Jamaal Lascelles being replaced by Fabian Schar. The captain suffered a knee injury late in the first half.
Newcastle looked improved to start the second half. However, in the 53rd minute, Fabian Schar was pickpocketed by Timo Werner who was through on goal. The German centered a pass that was intercepted by Fernandez saving Fabian’s blushes.
The lads continued to hold their own at the hour mark with some decent buildup play but still could fashion nothing to threaten Edouard Mendy in the Chelsea goal.
Chelsea then doubled their lead in the 65th minute as Timo Werner carved through Newcastle on a counter. The German played Tammy Abraham through and he slotted it past Darlow to make it 2-0.
Steve Bruce was preparing to bring Miguel Almiron for Javier Manquillo on at the time and made the change after the goal.
Newcastle came very close to bringing one back when Sean Longstaff launched a thunderbolt from outside the box that rattled the crossbar in the 72nd minute. That was just Newcastle’s fifth shot of the afternoon.
Steve Bruce made his final change withdrawing Saint-Maximin for Andy Carroll in the 74th minute. He replaced Joelinton upfront as the Brazilian went to the left and Almiron on the right. Murphy had moved to wingback when Almiron came on.
Newcastle basically went into damage control to see out the match. The second half performance was improved from the first forty-five. However, that’s not saying too much as Chelsea completely dominated the first half.
Newcastle again offered little threat in the attacking third managing just 1 shot on target. We’ve now lost two straight with a stretch of winnable matches coming up. The next month could be make or break for Newcastle.

Comment #1I worry Fernandez going forward. Pretty sure he’s been out most used defender since the beginning of last season. Looks so tired physically and mentally with the amount of mistakes he’s been making. Bruce managed to kill Lejuene’s career with us in the space of a week, I’d be surprised if the same doesn’t happen to Fede. Needs taken out for a few games.

Comment #4I reckon it’s the mental and morale collateral Bruce is most culpable for. Whoever hired him should drive off with him.

Comment #5I don’t know why I bother doing an analysis of the game as it’s the same shit different day.
Why didn’t we start with the same intensity in the second half??
Honestly I just don’t understand what Bruce is trying to achieve.
I think we should try Wilson and Big Joe up top when we can as one big striker and one on the shoulder type striker is a good partnership, well it’s a far better option than Wilson and Maxi.
Another awful showing

Nearly 18 months
Over £100m spent
3 windows, all of which he was happy.
Tried his preffered 442 a few times with disastrous results.
Any decent manager would have implemented his ideas and philosophy on the team by now.
How long will it take to see any progress?
Or does he have no ideas or philosophy?
Taxi for Bruce, wheres Jib when you need him?

It was gaining some form first few games, then for whatever reason Bruce change it up. So frustrating.

Comment #15He took off ASM for Carroll. That was effectively giving up.
Improved second half? I wouldn’t say so though we had 2 good chances which were complete failures in basic technique from Joelinton and Hayden (though one would’ve been ruled out). We still couldn’t actually form a cohesive move.
Joelinton is possibly the worst Premier League signing ever if the reported fee is true (I don’t believe it is, I think it was inflated to stop criticism of not spending).
Bruce has got to think about resigning after having his team put in that performance- he should be embarrassed.
They looked like strangers and didn’t know what they were supposed to do.
An utter failure of scouting and coaching. We are the worst team in the league.

Comment #22Chelsea don’t even look that great — they have strong individual players — but look very vulnerable at the back. Chelsea will struggle for top 4 based on that performance.
Still, it was enough to brush us aside. Sitting back played to Chelsea’s strengths when it was obvious they had problems in defence.
Surely Bruce can see playing 5 at the back detracts from attacking, and isn’t fit for the purpose of keeping goals out — so what’s the point carrying on with it? Back to starting from scratch: again.

I can see us losing all those games if this is how we set up on the pitch, Robbie Earle ex Wimbledon now a broadcaster in the states.
When asked, what have you learnt from Newcastle United, his reply, it’s really hard watching a Steve Bruce team, Nail whacked so fcuking hard on the head Mr Earle.

Brucie really should not have been offered the job.
Plus crap signings – most of which have never been top players – second raters at best.
Wilson might, just might make it as a centre forward.
Bargain basement types will not progress any team.

Comment #30Chelsea do have some really good, great players, but that wasn’t the difference between the two teams, the difference was basics, passing, movement, effort willingness to try, our players ain’t terrible but the coaching is obviously lacking in every department, the sooner the coaching staff are overhauled from Bruce downwards the sooner we will start to be a team, simple as that, no point buying or selling anyone in January until the management is changed

Comment #35Another crap day at the office for Bruciesaurus.
Not only has he dropped Miggy to the bench, it looks as though he has pissed ASM off too, quite a few of the squad look on a downer, i think it will take a miracle to get the players spirits up, so basically we are screwed.

Comment #36It’s not about Fernandez, Schär or Laschelles. Bruce has completely destroyed our defensive solidity. He completely destroyed the structure of the team; period. For that matter whoever is in Bruce’s team may end up looking like a clown. No wonder Almirón is trying to bail out. He sticks around under this idiot and his career is destroyed.

Comment #39People like Nufcursed and WLtoon sound like the clueless pundits. Rafa didn’t play terrible football to get us promoted we actually looked really good both defensively and offensively however we had the best squad so that was to be expected. In the PL we had one of the worst squads so he started by making us extremely difficult to beat and we seemed extremely well organised. That is compared to now when SB is playing extremely defensive but we still look so open. He then started adding to the team with the likes of Rondon and we had the defensive base but we started to look very threatening when we went forward. By the time he brought Almiron in the team was so well drilled and going forward we looked very good. In that last half season we looked so strong in both directions and every fan was so optimistic of what we could achieve by adding 1-2 quality players and building. Anyone who could not see what Rafa was building is clueless.

Comment #40Well I must admit that I wasn’t expecting anything from todays match.
It seems that Bruceless was of the same opinion. Sadly he will take a 2 nil defeats as a positive instead of looking at why his tic-tacs didn’t work.
Can we expect any more points in 2020? Seems unlikely.
