Newcastle were set up in a 5-4-1 with Allan Saint-Maximin on the left-wing and Jacob Murphy on the right. Joelinton spearheaded the attack. The lads started the match showing some real intent. They immediately won two free-kicks and two corners in the first three minutes.
Things returned to normal after Newcastle’s brief spurt with Chelsea going on the attack. The Blues got the first attempt on goal forcing Karl Darlow into another wonderful save on a low shot by Timo Werner in the 4th minute.
Darlow made another wonderful save in the 8th minute. Hakim Ziyech launched a ball from the right that found Tammy Abraham in front of the goal. His header was parried away by Darlow.
However, on the subsequent corner, Chelsea took the lead through an own goal from Federico Fernandez. The defender knocked in Mason Mount’s cross after being harried by Ben Chilwell.
Chelsea maintained their dominance for the remainder of the half after Newcastle’s early push. Timo Werner should have doubled Chelsea’s lead on the half-hour mark but pulled his shot wide when he was in front of the goal.
Newcastle have been thoroughly outclassed by the visitors at St. James’ Park. Chelsea have had 80% of the possession while Newcastle have had no efforts on target. However, a combination of a lack of ruthlessness by the Blues and Karl Darlow keeps Newcastle’s deficit to just one goal.

Then there may be some hope.
Whilst he’s here and has Bruce with his dire football, we just need to get enough points to stay up.

– #NUFC are least efficient team at advancing the ball
– Most passive at pressing
– Slower this season than last
– Defend like counter-attacking side but don’t counter
This isn’t a special performance it’s how they play.

Comment #54Jail, improve your attention to detail, it’s always your weakness. I don’t despise rafa at all, but I despised his approach in certain games and many of you didn’t have the balls to call it out because of who it was.

Comment #61Munster there’s a 2018 thread you should be posting on. This is the Chelsea game 2020 Steve Bruce, coach, season two. You’re well out of date.

Comment #63ASM is so wasted in the way Bruce always sets us up to play. His CAM poistion isn’t the problem it’s how defensive the whole team is setup to play that he is wasted.
