Newcastle midfielder Matty Longstaff has played just 29 minutes this season. The local lad missed the first couple of months of the campaign with a thigh injury before making his debut as a second-half substitute in the loss at Southampton.
Matty has yet to get onto the pitch since but did make the bench for our big win last Friday at Crystal Palace. With there being up to five unnamed Magpies having tested positive for Covid-19, he could play a part at Aston Villa on Friday.
However, once Newcastle weather this latest storm, there needs to be a plan for the 20-year-old. The promising youngster has barely featured for Newcastle over the past 10 months. Since February, Matty has just 3 substitute appearances in the league. That’s just not enough first-team football for him to develop.
The Chronicle has cited a report from The Sunday Mirror that Derby may look to land Matty on loan in January. Derby are in the midst of a takeover from the Bin Zayed Group, which unsuccessfully tried to purchase Newcastle in 2019.
They’ve also recently appointed former-Newcastle boss Steve McClaren as technical director while parting ways with manager Philip Cocu. Wayne Rooney is currently the interim manager of the last-placed Rams.
While we have obvious doubts about McClaren, this could be a decent move for Matty. He needs first-team football and could get that at Derby for the second half of this season. With him signing only a two-year-deal this past summer, Longstaff needs to be playing to show what kind of longer-term deal he is worth.

Comment #1I only put the Hendrick comment in last night to see if would get a response from any night shift lurkers as he does have a total Marmite element about him.
Only a couple of early morning bites though! 🙂

Comment #10I noticed one or two posts about Hendrick being played out of position as the reason he hasn`t done well.
In my view even in his best position he is shite, totally anonymous when playing CM, which is supposedly his strongest role.
M Longstaff may be on his way to Derby on loan, which could be a good exercise for the lad, some real game time etc, i hope he does well.

Comment #12I can’t see Raul Jimenez coming back from that injury, especially with all the publicity about head injuries and dementia etc.
Great shame as he is a superb striker!

Comment #15I know you’re all thinking it but apparently, NUFC would need to have less than 14 players available before the Villa game would be cancelled.

Comment #16if we won the FA cup we’d be dining out on it for 10 years. Arsenal won it in Arteta’s first season and it’s forgotten and they’re failures!
