After a scoreless first half, Steve Bruce replaced a rusty Jamaal Lascelles to start the second half at Arsenal. Matt Ritchie came on which pushed Paul Dummett inside as the left-sided center-back.
Newcastle started the half trying to play further up the pitch. It resulted in some decent opportunities for Andy Carroll who managed to get away three shots in the opening ten minutes. All shots came after Newcastle won free-kicks deep in Arsenal territory.
Carroll only got one of the shots on target. The third one was a golden chance that the striker should have buried. Jeff Hendrick’s shot landed to the Geordie in front of goal but he pushed his effort wide.
In the 63rd minute, Martin Dubravka came to the rescue as Pepe’s cross found Joe Willock at the back post. Willock headed the ball into the ground which gave Dubravka time to make a diving save.
Steve Bruce made an attacking change in the 68th minute by replacing Emil Krafth with Jacob Murphy. After the change, Arsenal had a decent spell but were only able to get away a few long-range efforts which all sailed over the bar.
Bruce made his third and fourth changes after 80 minutes. It was the moment Newcastle fans have been waiting for. Elliot Anderson came on for Joelinton as DeAndre Yedlin replaced Miguel Almiron. Jacob Murphy pushed up the pitch as Yedlin moved to left wing-back.
Late in normal time, Andy Carroll had another excellent chance. On a break, Murphy’s cross found Anderson in the box. The youngster’s shot was blocked and landed to Andy Carroll. However, Andy’s shot was saved by Leno who then gathered the ball.
The Magpies were much improved in the second half as they committed to playing higher up the pitch. Andy Carroll had two great chances but unfortunately couldn’t put either away. The lads have put in a tremendous effort so let’s hope they have enough in the tank for extra time.

Comment #41Whats dat clown bruce got against gayle now he shud have been on from d start. He shud also be tryin him out with wilson. Those 2 upfront wud scare any defence. Pace to burn. Bruce just hasnt got a clue. We have so much pace and he wont use it. Almiron frazer maxim almiron gayle wilson and he prefers to sit back tryin to use rafas tactics .

Comment #42Carroll has to start up top with Wilson. But he has to be told not to drop deep like he did last time they played together.

Comment #43Players who don’t look like they will make it in the PL: S. Longstaff, Murphy, and Krafth.

Comment #44I thought Anderson did well. First team start. Confident, actually could have been our match winner. Didn’t do himself any harm.

– Andersen debut
– Minutes in the legs of Lascelles, Dubravka, Dummett, Hendrick, Carroll, Krafth
– Positive 90mins and had the best 2 chances
– Only focus now is the league
Negatives
– Murphy and Yedlin were very poor in my opinion left us so exposed
– Poor 30mins of extra time

I believe Bruce is concerned about Wilsons injury and wanted to make sure Gayle is available to start on Tuesday

Comment #48That was more their best 11 than ours. I think we performed quite well for the 90mins.
Just lost our legs in the extra time

Comment #49I’ve yet to see a local talent who has strength or pace. Key if you want to make it in the PL. Gene pool lacking.

Comment #50The one thing which looked good about Anderson was the willingness and sharpness to get into the box.

Comment #51Carroll Mom for me . put it about kept running and putting them under pressure.Shame he didn’t convert at least one of his 2 chanes but brilliant save from Leno on the 2nd.
Overall didn’t deserve to lose 2-0

He did look average paced across the ground, that makes him quicker than the Longstaffs though.
He missed a chance, it happens to all players, as Tsunki pointed out though, he had the presence of mind and energy to be there in the 1st place for the pullback, something we rarely see from our supporting forward players. Aside from that he was decent on the ball.
Not getting carried away with him at all, he’s just turned 18 a few months ago and is coming into professional football under Bruce and his staff, so he’s up against it anyway.

Comment #53Tierney showed what a good left back looks like. Lewis needs to up his game as he currently offers nothing.

Comment #56Well at least we can now concentrate on finishing in 17th place to keep Ashley, Barnes & Bishop happy.
Rinse and repeat each season until we do get relegated.

Comment #57Our decision making on the break is lacking. Probably because we don’t do enough of it.

Comment #59Not such a bad showing overall…
I mean, for the current beta club that Newcastle is. A real plucky effort against an alpha going through the motions.
Pats on the back all around for losing: again.
I wonder if Keegan still watches Newcastle games. (I’d like to think not)

Comment #60Our lads looked knackered in extra time, still gave it a go but outplayed, so no disgrace in that defeat.
Big Andy showed he’s still good enough, should be starting and was possibly our best defender in the 1st half.
MOM for me.

Comment #61To be honest we matched Arsenal tonight until the last 10 mins of extra time and actually we had the better chances in normal time.
If we play with that passion we should be ok, especially with Maxi and Wilson to come in.
But please Bruce, leave out Joelinton!

Comment #62Clark played very well, yet again.
Why do we persevere with Joelinton. Not good enough.
Andy Carroll….. turned back the clock…..played well.
Truth is, Kraffe, Murphy, Sean Longstaffe, Hendricks, Yedlin, not good enough.
Fingers crossed we survive relegation.

Carroll would score both chances 9 times out of 10.
Don’t know why we’re worried about playing Sheffield Utd., they played today as we’ll just a few hours earlier!

The lads played well.
Didn’t disgrace themselves.
What a bunch of losers you lot are
Arsenal were in third gear
Aston villas kids didnt disgrace themselves to a very good liver pool side
Nufc are annual losers when the draw is made for cups everybody wants to play us we are useless
The owner the players and that nomark Bruce
Doesn’t it tell you anything about the team when a sicknote thick streak of p@@@ up front in the twilight of his shitty career can be motm for many of you
This is a player who would not get near the top sixes third team and the rest of the teams second string
Roll on April and get this club and its loser fans back in the championship where it belongs it has stunk out the epl long enough
Oh and let’s wait for the comments on why thick andy could help the England team out
I mean who needs Harry Kane and rashford when big Andy stars for newcastle

Comment #65Fair play to the lads they give it a go specially in the second half of normal time and could have won it, i dont like to lose but can except defeat as long as we give it ago and at least try to win the match which they done tonight. Big Andy Carroll did indeed look like the player he was years ago, he was brilliant when back helping the defence, and played a great game when we were attacking, for me he was without doubt the man of the match, we should play both Wilson and Carroll up front, although big Andy might not be fit to play against Sheff Utd on tuesday with such a short turnover. You’re right we are perpetual losers because of the owner. Before him we were close and but for him we would have had success by now!
Poor players, poor facilities, poor coaches. But the spirit they shoes tonight should keep us up and pray there’s a takeover cos there is no point on supporting this regime!

Comment #67Whose lovechild is Joelinton to warrant so many starts and so many minutes while consistently offering nowt? Literally, nowt – and his body language is pathetic, too. Painful to watch him going through the motions of supposedly pressing the opposition and when he gets a pass, its like watching pinball. Carroll’s effort must have embarrassed SleepyJoe. We must have the only Brazilian in Europe who couldn’t trap a bag of cement. Seriously, it must be in Bruce’s contract that this plank starts.
