Newcastle Concede Twice In Extra Time And Are Out Of The FA Cup

Newcastle put in an excellent second-half performance as both clubs were unable to find a breakthrough in normal time. However, our missed chances in the second half have cost us as the lads ran out of steam in extra time and Arsenal grabbed two late goals to boot us from the FA Cup.

Martin Dubravka was called into action early. Granit Xhaka hit a volley from just outside the box that Dubravka tipped over the bar. Newcastle were able to clear the subsequent corner.

Newcastle then created a decent chance as Jacob Murphy found space down the right and put in an excellent cross. However, Arsenal’s David Luiz got a foot in to thwart Carroll’s effort and Arsenal were able to clear the ball.

Arsenal followed that with a flurry of opportunities. The first came on a break but Bukary Sako’s effort was straight to Dubravka. Moments later Sako got away another shot that was blocked by Ciaran Clark. Then it was Matt Ritchie with a timely block on a shot by Nicolas Pepe.

Steve Bruce brought Dwight Gayle on for Andy Carroll, who was excellent despite his couple of missed chances, to start the second 15 minutes of extra time. In the 19th minute, Emile Smith Rowe got the breakthrough for Arsenal.

After Ciaran Clark lost possession deep, the youngster controlled a header from Alexandre Lacazzette off his chest. He maintained his composure and guided a low shot just inside the far post. It was a disappointing goal to concede after such a great defensive display.

Arsenal added a second in the 117th minute as Aubameyang tapped in a cross from Kieran Tierney from the left. The lads put in a commendable performance but the extra 30 minutes proved too much as fatigue set in. So we are out of the FA Cup but it was not due to a lack of fight from the boys.

Now the focus shifts back to the league as we travel to Sheffield United on Tuesday for a massive match. We have to find a way to score more goals. The opportunities were there tonight but we just couldn’t find a breakthrough.

We have got through our vert difficult patch of games now and with only 1 point it isnt great. But we have improved our performances since prior to Christmas when we were abysmal.

If we can build on our performance again and come away with 3 points from Sheffield will be a big step forward

Gooners youngsters have pace and an attacking threat. I’m afraid ours don’t. You either have pace or you don’t.

A big step to where, exactly?

Gutted for Clark, he like exhausted but should have just booted it clear.

    I knew Smith-Rowe would score.

Anderson did quite well when he came on. I defend him a bit but Joelinton was poor and Hendrick again pretty rubbish. Carroll played well but should have scored and we’d be in the next round.

Sheff Utd won so will have a bit of confidence from that. Hopefully we can get the 3 points, not sure who will be fit for that one.

Would give Anderson a start over Joelinton. Matty Longstaff will start, as will Lewis. Just hope Wilson is alright.

Squeaky Bum time on Tuesday night…..

I’m not too bothered about getting beat in the FA Cup at least we went out to a Premier League side. We were never going to Wembley with this team – No sparks at all just now.

Sadly Damp Squibs come to mind 🙁 🙁

West Ham bought Haller for 45 million then sold him for 15 when they saw he was useless. Newcastle must get rid of Joelinton for whatever anyone will pay!!
    Totally useless!!!

Jamal Lewis ,Joelinton should be dropped from the squad for new incoming players, both are the worst players to be signed in a longtime.

A lot of the squad have got minutes in recently, that can only be a positive going forward.

Maxi and Fraser coming back in to the fray can only be good. How long they all remain fit under the Bruce is a different matter!

Absolutely delighted with the result tonight by the way, last thing we need is a cup run.Would have been gutted if we scraped through that one,far better to let proper clubs progress.Just need to get 38 points on the board asap and pray for the Arabs to come charging in as soon as that’s sorted.Happy days!

Im not sure how we get any positives from thaf.sheff utd will get there 1st win tuesday night because we have a manager dat hasnt a clue. Hes tryin to sign defenders when we are loaded with them. We hav no centeal midfield and hes focusing on the defence.

Ashley has played a blinder — stopped the club from ‘doing a Leeds’ — and through good financial work, has the club primed for a sale to the Saudis.

I sincerely wish I could delude myself into believing what Mund believes.

Watch out purgatory, here we come…

Im very worried about us surviving this season if I’m honest

    Next fixtures

    Sheff Utd
    Arsenal
    Leeds
    Everton
    Crystal Palace
    Southampton
    Chelsea
    Man United

Im hoping to be wrong but can see us picking up not many points against most of these teams in better form than us

WLtoon, that was the best chant I’ve ever known at NUFC.In them days I used to sell the Geordie jackpot at the turnstiles and we really did have something to shout about then.Admittedly we won nowt but we tried and came close a couple of times, then the parasite turned up!

All everyone supports is the idea of a takeover.

Pity us if it doesn’t happen though.

    Andy Carroll

Proper Geordie gritty and fight today .

They gave man of the match to a player that came on as a sub and should not be on the pitch.

Man of the Match was clearly Andy Carroll.

Danny Murphy is a disgrace .

Dubravka making world class saves and all Murphy could utter was decent save ..when he made one particular outstanding save Murphy utters quietly ” mm good save” . They won’t give us a thing in their meaness and bias ..clearly apparent.

    Grrrrrr !

Sorry but it wasn’t a red at all. He wasn’t driving into the player at all, he simply slipped over the ball and it made some minor contact with his leg – yellow card and a foul all day

Carroll MotM – never stopped trying set a great example, just snatched at his few chances through lack of confidence.

Joe – got to go. I would check his passport, bet it says Nicaragua and not Brazil on it.

Krafth – not Pl level, struggled against Tierney who showed his class.

Clarke – battled well and just a double touch let him down

Hendrick – not enough energy for a midfielder, couldn’t enforce a pub lock in

Dubs – looked rusty, but reliable as ever, not at fault for their goals.

S Longstaff – another one lacking as a midfielder, has stamina, but very few skills

The rest – did just enough to not get barracked

    the Bruce – out

    Online Guy,

I love the passion mate. But which big decisions are you talking about?

It was never a red card.

It was closer to a pen from Clark than a red card for Smith Rowe.

I actually thought the Ref got most things right.
