Newcastle put in an excellent second-half performance as both clubs were unable to find a breakthrough in normal time. However, our missed chances in the second half have cost us as the lads ran out of steam in extra time and Arsenal grabbed two late goals to boot us from the FA Cup.
Martin Dubravka was called into action early. Granit Xhaka hit a volley from just outside the box that Dubravka tipped over the bar. Newcastle were able to clear the subsequent corner.
Newcastle then created a decent chance as Jacob Murphy found space down the right and put in an excellent cross. However, Arsenal’s David Luiz got a foot in to thwart Carroll’s effort and Arsenal were able to clear the ball.
Arsenal followed that with a flurry of opportunities. The first came on a break but Bukary Sako’s effort was straight to Dubravka. Moments later Sako got away another shot that was blocked by Ciaran Clark. Then it was Matt Ritchie with a timely block on a shot by Nicolas Pepe.
Steve Bruce brought Dwight Gayle on for Andy Carroll, who was excellent despite his couple of missed chances, to start the second 15 minutes of extra time. In the 19th minute, Emile Smith Rowe got the breakthrough for Arsenal.
After Ciaran Clark lost possession deep, the youngster controlled a header from Alexandre Lacazzette off his chest. He maintained his composure and guided a low shot just inside the far post. It was a disappointing goal to concede after such a great defensive display.
Arsenal added a second in the 117th minute as Aubameyang tapped in a cross from Kieran Tierney from the left. The lads put in a commendable performance but the extra 30 minutes proved too much as fatigue set in. So we are out of the FA Cup but it was not due to a lack of fight from the boys.
Now the focus shifts back to the league as we travel to Sheffield United on Tuesday for a massive match. We have to find a way to score more goals. The opportunities were there tonight but we just couldn’t find a breakthrough.
