Newcastle Concede Twice In Extra Time And Are Out Of The FA Cup

Newcastle put in an excellent second-half performance as both clubs were unable to find a breakthrough in normal time. However, our missed chances in the second half have cost us as the lads ran out of steam in extra time and Arsenal grabbed two late goals to boot us from the FA Cup.

Martin Dubravka was called into action early. Granit Xhaka hit a volley from just outside the box that Dubravka tipped over the bar. Newcastle were able to clear the subsequent corner.

Newcastle then created a decent chance as Jacob Murphy found space down the right and put in an excellent cross. However, Arsenal’s David Luiz got a foot in to thwart Carroll’s effort and Arsenal were able to clear the ball.

Arsenal followed that with a flurry of opportunities. The first came on a break but Bukary Sako’s effort was straight to Dubravka. Moments later Sako got away another shot that was blocked by Ciaran Clark. Then it was Matt Ritchie with a timely block on a shot by Nicolas Pepe.

Steve Bruce brought Dwight Gayle on for Andy Carroll, who was excellent despite his couple of missed chances, to start the second 15 minutes of extra time. In the 19th minute, Emile Smith Rowe got the breakthrough for Arsenal.

After Ciaran Clark lost possession deep, the youngster controlled a header from Alexandre Lacazzette off his chest. He maintained his composure and guided a low shot just inside the far post. It was a disappointing goal to concede after such a great defensive display.

Arsenal added a second in the 117th minute as Aubameyang tapped in a cross from Kieran Tierney from the left. The lads put in a commendable performance but the extra 30 minutes proved too much as fatigue set in. So we are out of the FA Cup but it was not due to a lack of fight from the boys.

Now the focus shifts back to the league as we travel to Sheffield United on Tuesday for a massive match. We have to find a way to score more goals. The opportunities were there tonight but we just couldn’t find a breakthrough.

I have to say i used to like Gary Lineker, but he is really starting to anoy and irritate me now with all his sly little digs at Alan Shearar at every opportunity, its been going on now for a few years, i love a bit of craic and banter as much as anyone, but for me its been relentless the way he tries to undermine and belittle Shearar and Newcastle at every possible opportunity.

For anyone interested and made a comment on the subject

I wasn’t saying sign Josh King in place of Gayle I was saying sign him to give us more options and retain Gayle.

Some jumping the gun and misconception in evidence .

It did not escape my notice that it had been mooted that Gayle was on his way South, Bournemouth and Fulham being mentioned.

Gayle aint exactly ” Der Bomber” (played for West Germany, long story)

S Longstaff will not make it in the Premiership,he’s as slow as a week in
Jail and has next to no redeeming features at this level. His brother however could end up being top drawer as long as Bruceless doesn’t get the chance to ruin him over the next 18 months.NUFC in its current form would suck the talent from anybody,it’s anti football, anti ambition and anti climax. Its a shambles from top to bottom. We need 38 points and a takeover because the squad is shite.

    Hard lines the lads.
And yes a bit of praise for Bruce.
Not happy about Anderson pushing people over for no reason. Unnecessary.
I know he’s young but unfortunately most footballers just never learn.
    Rooney is a prime example.

We had a chance on full time (90 mins) to steal the game but couldn’t get the ball in the net.
    But overall result as expected.

    Relegation scrap from now on.

I’m not getting this Matty Longstaff praise thing.
For me he is the same as Sean, just smaller.

They both just run about in circles trying their best to get in the way.
Neither are good footballers, they just interfere with play.

Is it fact that they are local and came through the excuse of an academy that get folk excited?

Matty will dine out for the rest of his life on that goal v Man U, Sean will pay the bill.

Underdeveloped, overhyped – sell them to Hoffenheim and buy them back for double the following season.

    Anyway, back to the match.

We tried hard away from home against a decent Arsenal side. Took the match into extra time which I never expected and I felt sorry for Clark who had a decent game until that hiccup. Carroll was my MoM.

Ashley, Barnes & Bishop will be pleased that we can now concentrate on finishing 17th.

With up coming matches that is no given.

    Bruceless out!

Danny Murphy, nasty player, nasty pundit, always snide remarks about our fans, talked about Arsenal players all through the first half, even going to the injured player while Newcastle had the ball. I don’t know why we bother, these pundits are all alike.

I think Sean will go on to be a good player but unless there’s a takeover and he has better players around him and in a winning team sadly not for Newcastle.

Hope I’m wrong and he achieves all his ambitions with us .

Matty needs to find his best position and role..needs to Watch David Battys game as creativity is not Mattys forte ..Sean ..Garry Speed ..see how it’s done.

To be fair – he did apologise and his excuse of being up in the gantry, open to the elements, 3 degrees for 100 minutes could cause a slight lapse of concentration for a moment.
They then laughed at him for mistake, and he laughed at himself.

    Give him a break.

It would help if we got Frazer, and Maxi back. We need some one with a bit of quality to get the ball up the pitch. I thought Hendricks wasn’t too bad, didn’t know Longstaff was on the pitch, the ball passed midfield most of the time. Second half much better, could have should have scored, the story of our team.

Aye, didn’t think we’d get to extra time to be honest at the outset. Big Andy must be gutted, another day we run out winners in normal time!

Few issues with the Bruce set up however. So you start Andy yet you don’t start Yedlin, Murphy or Ritchie and Andy ends up doing his best work for the team in defence for most of the 90.

Odd set up for expansive front foot footie!

    Mr T,

I’m glad you’re back posting and I’m glad you’re doing OK.

We’re not in a relegation position (in previous years at this time we have been)

Right now, we have quite a buffer….will that change? I don’t know.
I suspect we’ll be comfortable (from relegation) without threatening to break into the top 10

Don’t think we played badly at all considering Arsenals squad was very strong and we missed key players. In that 2nd half we should’ve finished the game and nobody could say we didn’t deserve it but class shone through in extra time and the better team eventually won.

Andy Carroll looked like a man possessed and honestly even though he missed our chances, that’s the fittest and best I’ve seen him since he left us for Liverpool years ago. He was virtually unplayable and looked very lovely throughout so that’s a huge plus for us and that goal against Leicester seems to have fired him up so MOTM for me and fair play to the lad.

Sean Longstaff, not even going to go there I’m done with that lad. He’s nowhere near league one standard.

Elliot Anderson on the other hand looks like a real player. Stick him behind Wilson and Carroll with ASM and Miggy on the wings and we might have something but knowing Mr kebab at half time Brucey ballsack we’ll probably revert back to our trusted 9-0-1 formation against bottom of the league on Tuesday and never see Anderson again.

Like someone mentioned above though, we have looked much improved recently even though we’ve not picked up wins.

Well said and spot on in you comments ‘re Dorty Morphy.

Never a good word ..and when he is forced into one about Newcastle because he’s live on air and does not want to be outed as grudging in any positivity towards us he almost says it under his breath and usually utters the minimum of praise that makes it sound like we done something well but is a mistake and lucky.

Bring a few young guns in ..scares the established players into more than picking their wages up in a wheelbarra and stirs their pride..its like a metaphoric kick right up the arse.

    Carltoon,

I totally agree with you on getting on our players back.

I remember reading a lot of comments on this blog that we only beat crystal palace because they had their captain and most influential player out.

Isn’t that exactly what we’ve been going through for the last six weeks or so?

Honestly, sometimes I read the comments on this blog and think am I reading NUFC supporters or NUFC haters.

During the game I fully understand that passion gets the better of people (I never comment during a game personally, I would prefer to watch).

But the amount of negativity and vitriol between games baffles me.

Anyway, rant over (tin foil hat on) 🙂

    Ny Mag,
The difference being we had a bad first half to a season and got better, we’ve had our best start for six years and seem to be getting worse and worse. Carver took over in late December once on 28 points and very nearly relegated us. We have to rely on this clown getting another five wins and around four draws from twenty matches.
