Newcastle Concede Twice In Extra Time And Are Out Of The FA Cup

Newcastle put in an excellent second-half performance as both clubs were unable to find a breakthrough in normal time. However, our missed chances in the second half have cost us as the lads ran out of steam in extra time and Arsenal grabbed two late goals to boot us from the FA Cup.

Martin Dubravka was called into action early. Granit Xhaka hit a volley from just outside the box that Dubravka tipped over the bar. Newcastle were able to clear the subsequent corner.

Newcastle then created a decent chance as Jacob Murphy found space down the right and put in an excellent cross. However, Arsenal’s David Luiz got a foot in to thwart Carroll’s effort and Arsenal were able to clear the ball.

Arsenal followed that with a flurry of opportunities. The first came on a break but Bukary Sako’s effort was straight to Dubravka. Moments later Sako got away another shot that was blocked by Ciaran Clark. Then it was Matt Ritchie with a timely block on a shot by Nicolas Pepe.

Steve Bruce brought Dwight Gayle on for Andy Carroll, who was excellent despite his couple of missed chances, to start the second 15 minutes of extra time. In the 19th minute, Emile Smith Rowe got the breakthrough for Arsenal.

After Ciaran Clark lost possession deep, the youngster controlled a header from Alexandre Lacazzette off his chest. He maintained his composure and guided a low shot just inside the far post. It was a disappointing goal to concede after such a great defensive display.

Arsenal added a second in the 117th minute as Aubameyang tapped in a cross from Kieran Tierney from the left. The lads put in a commendable performance but the extra 30 minutes proved too much as fatigue set in. So we are out of the FA Cup but it was not due to a lack of fight from the boys.

Now the focus shifts back to the league as we travel to Sheffield United on Tuesday for a massive match. We have to find a way to score more goals. The opportunities were there tonight but we just couldn’t find a breakthrough.

Looking at the fixtures a few weeks back most of us thought we wouldn`t pick up many, if any points, over those run of games, and we haven`t , can`t see what all the fuss is about really.
As long as we beat the teams down there with us we will be ok, trouble is , there are no guarantee`s we will.

    NY,

Ranting aside! (We’re all ranters mate)

I see both the House and Senate Sergeant at Arms blokes at the Capitol are getting the push as well mate.

They jump before they get pushed as they know the policians need to hang folk for optics.

Problem I have with it all is, when they do their planning/emergency response meetings prior to an event, who’s in charge?
Must be the Mayor otherwise the tails wagging the dog is it not?

NYmag, I never post during the match either, mind this is the first one for ages that I’ve been able to watch. I really think Carroll would be better as a defender, was very good at the back today, and he never stopped running.

Whether it was accidental or not it caught him halfway up his leg and was a potential leg breaker, let’s see if any of our lads get away with anything similar in future games.

    Jail,

I’ve always said, Bruceys CV did not warrant him becoming our manager.
I have no say (and neither do you) who is appointed and who is sacked.

He’s going nowhere (we both know that)

So, as a supporter I want both him and the team to do well.

That means I’m not gonna call him names and I’m not gonna slag our players

I implore you to all go back and watch the tackle and try say honestly that was a red.

It was obviously not. I agree we get the rough end of the stick on a lot of calls but geez the ref actually had a great game and like someone mentioned before Clarks trip in the box was more of a pen then that tackle was a red

I understand we’ve been relegated twice and lost big revenue on each occasion, and I understand that we are losing big revenue now because of covid, and I understand that Ashley will only spend if the club has money to spend, particularly now, when he’s looking to sell, but we are such an “ordinary team and club” now after 14 years of this owner, which is remarkable given the size and fanatical nature of our support, iconic stadium, major northern City it sits so proudly in the centre of, home to the city’s only club, magnificent strip and long storied history, and yet this owner can’t even give us a side that can run around competitively, create the opportunities and score the goals to make us worth watching, ever.

I get the concept, of Ashley in, to get him out, as he is the only person than get this takeover done, but honestly, it can’t come quick enough now. We battled, but that was a tough watch, and that’s exactly all we have to offer. You compare the natural resources this club has, to the football we’ve played under this owner, and you can see nothing else but how terrible he’s been.

Uncertain.Unfortunately in the uk the majority of broadcasters and written media outlets no longer report any truth in their news reports. As far as they are concerned the UK is a vipers nest of racism.Of course, as all right minded people know, the UK is one of the most welcoming and diverse society’s in the world and has been for thousands of years. It has became increasingly obvious to the vast majority over at least the last ten years that the media in the UK is run by woke leftie snowflakes that despise the UK and all the good it has done for the world.I suspect that the troubles in the states at the minute is a result of media propaganda trying to paint your good citizens as evil racists when just like us nothing could be further from the truth.

Speaking of rants: can anyone tell me how the team selected tonight was ever going to win?
Only one player with pace (headless Almiron), our best defender was our striker, and the commentary team thought we should be happy to be 0-0 at half time!
I’m sorry but cup games have to be won ie someone has to score goals. FFS we don’t get anything for a 0-0. That was probably the slowest, defence minded team that could have started, how could we win???
Obviously Tuesday’s more important, it was clearly a case of the old “Ashley, forget the cups” mentality back in as PL survival is vital to his Sale chances. Let’s hope he gets his wish!!

Oh, and did you notice the praise that AC got for his work “in our penalty area” – he was our only Striker on the pitch!!! Shouldn’t he be in their penalty area. (I know, simplistic view but I’m bloody angry). As Jail said, we got a decent start and are going backwards.

    Jail for Ashley

I can understand where NY Mag is coming from to be honest, he has said Bruce would not have been his choice of manager, but he just doesn`t want to slag the manager or players of and thats fair enough, some of us including myself will let of steam about Bruce, but as ive often said on here Bruce is only a symptom of all the problems at Newcastle, we all know Ashley is the root cause of all the problems at our club Jail.

My take on watching the game..That Arsenal team is the worst I have seen. Both teams were dire, with plenty of effort, but these are two premiership sides??
I think Gayle should be sold and Rondon should replace him, plus we need somebody of quality in midfield where we are rubbish..
It is worrying also that Joelinton is getting game time, he should be nowhere near a football pitch..Perhaps Bruce has been told he must play him but he is a waste of space taking up someone’s place..

Captain very good post as always, i also cant for the life of me understand how Joelinton gets so many games, is Bruce being told by Ashley he must be picked, something strange is going on as he offers nothing on the pitch, we might as well indeed be playing with 10 men everytime he plays, i know some guys have defended him on the blog at times, but surely they must now have lost patience with him, in my opinion he is a total waste of space not to mention a waste of so much money.

    Wor Bill

    Well said earlier.

Over the ball..studs showing ..hurt Sean and brought him down foul dangerous play.

Do you think Joey Barton would have stayed on the pitch if it was him with a tackle like that ..no chance as his reputation would have prejudiced any decision ..it was an Arsenal player so he was let off by a referee and a var official who were looking for a reason not to send the Arsenal player off. Slow mo , real time , and the fact they were studying the hack for 5 mins tells you that it looked bad and was bad.

The player used foul means to stop our man ,,studs showing and Over the ball is dangerous play and in the book it’s a sending off even if the intention was there and it was worse than the intention

OFF . It’s in the book, clearly stated .

Arsenal got away with it an won the tie because of it that’s how they get to cup finals , period.

It’s a sending off if the intention was there to stop a player by foul means , studs showing and over the ball.

It turned out worse than just showing his studs, it was over the ball and is dangerous reckless out of control play .

It’s a sending off just for the first part if you go by the book.

Hendrick was slightly better today. Hayden is better as a centre back. Carroll surprisingly has a bit of pace. Murphy can be a good player on his day. Can’t fault Clark for that mistake. Ritchie was very poor today. Poor crossing. We need a left back like Tierney. Gets forward all the time.
