Newcastle have bowed out of another cup competition this season with a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal. Yesterday’s loss, though, was a far cry from the one at Brentford in the quarter-final of the league cup.
The lads put up a valiant effort and fought for the win. However, they couldn’t keep it up into extra time and Arsenal punished us after some sloppy mistakes. The second-half performance was very good. The chances to win and advance were there but not taken.
So it’s come down to another deflating defeat. Newcastle have not won in seven straight as we head into Tuesday’s crucial match at Sheffield United. The Blades are winless in the league but did advance in the FA Cup with a 3-2 win at Bristol Rovers yesterday.
The highlight of the match for many fans was the introduction of young Elliot Anderson in the second half. Steve Bruce hinted that Anderson could play a part and he brought the 18-year-old on with 10 minutes left in normal time in a tense stalemate.
So that does speak highly of Bruce’s opinion of the attacking midfielder. This is what the head coach said per Newcastle’s Twitter account about the youngster after the match:
“I thought the kid was very, very good. He’s been knocking on the door for a while now so it was good to see. He’s got a big future ahead of him.”
After the match, Anderson spoke to NUFC TV and said the following about his debut:
“It’s a great feeling. To come on against a top club like Arsenal and to play for your boyhood club, it’s something you dream of as a kid.
“I’m just really excited for the upcoming games to see if I can stick around.”
There was a report yesterday that Newcastle were contemplating sending Elliot out on loan to the Championship. So we’ll see if he can stick around and make an impact for the second half of the season which seems to be his preference.
Bruce also spoke about another local lad in Andy Carroll. The 32-year-old put in a warrior-like performance at the front and the back. However, he missed some very good chances that has slightly marred his overall performance.
Here is what Bruce said about Newcastle’s overall performance, and in particular, Andy Carroll:
“When you come here, especially in a cup tie, and are presented with the opportunities that we had then you hope we can take one.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with how they’ve gone about it but we needed to take that big opportunity when it came.
“There’s nobody more disappointed than Andy that he didn’t take one of those chances but I thought his overall play and the way he led the line was terrific.”
Carroll was excellent yesterday and he lasted well into extra time. It’s just a shame he couldn’t put away one of his chances. Though he was definitely one of Newcastle’s best players on the day.
Callum Wilson was sent home with Jonjo Shelvey before the match as a precaution. So we don’t know of their status for Tuesday. If Wilson can’t go, Bruce could be short upfront as Carroll likely won’t be risked after the energy he expended yesterday.

Comment #41We always seem to end games with a much more attacking team under Bruce rather than start with it and put teams under pressure from kick off
Arsenal were there for the taking before they brought on the youngsters who are now their best players
Anderson impressed me had intelligent movement and a strong build moved a bit like Ross Barkley now why can’t we give him a run in the team like Arsenal do? He retained possession and got involved more than Joelinton did

Comment #47Well it wasn’t a classy performance but the lads did fight and show passion. I know, it’s the least we should expect but it’s not always there. However if we play like that every week we won’t go down, especially with ASM and Callum Wilson in the team.
Bruce has lots of options in defence and midfield albeit lacking quality and I’m not sure he knows his best team, but they are good enough to be mid table plus Shelvey is a good player when properly motivated!

Comment #48joe9 reminded me of a young George Foreman,
and walked around the pitch like an old George Foreman.
Then we brought on David Haye with Don King’s hair do.
To make matters worse Murphy looked a bit like Sugar Ray after being in
with “Hands of Stone”.
no wonder we got beat
On a plus the young lad did well,he might have a good future “the kid” (bruce an ism)
Why is it when we get over the half way line we pass backwards most of the time.

Comment #52Cleveleys Bob, good to hear from you again. Bills, some good thoughts there re strikers in different countries etc. Positives are that we are improving a little, pressing a bit higher and AC if he can recover. Oddly enough I think we could actually beat some crowd by 3 soon, if Carroll is fit. Joel is a shocker in this league. Pleased The Dildo Brothers also spunked so much on Haller. Loads of us were envious when they got him. Shows how hard it is to buy a good striker from abroad.

Comment #54hibbit – thanks for the earlier post.
Eating loads of bananas and have been prescribed Mg powder to mix in water three times a day.
Also scoffing loads of Spam. A fantastic product high content of pork/ham. Stinks when you open the tin but produces some lovely fritters for sarnis etc.
Used to eat it years ago and it went out of fashion – but it is really a fantastic product – you can keep it for ages in the tins.

From afar that looked like an easy goal for Carroll, but the ball was spinning and bouncing off the defender. Need to be placed rather than powered and the goal keeper did his job.

Comment #63Just how that Bruce realises that Sheff Utd will have had a little adrenalin rush from winning a match and will be pumped up for our game. Could mean that they might get physical and target the likes of Miggy and Anderson. We need to be on the pace and get 2 or 3 goals up to nullify their attempts to win. More than ever Bruces team selection, substitutions and tactics need to be right on it. This is a definite six pointer.

He made a tit of himself saying he had copies of my deleted tweets, firstly I haven’t deleted any tweets to him and if I had he simply couldn’t have access to them. So that highly offensive tweet he wrote out about me asking him what he had for breakfast was a figment of his imagination and now he wants to brush it under the carpet and pretend he never said it.

Comment #68Time for a change Clueless. Start off on the front foot on Tuesday. Partner Carroll with Wilson up top. Must also have Ritchie and Murphy wide to provide the crosses. Shelvey and Matty must come back into Midfield with Hayden.
Team:
Darlow or Dubravka ,Dummett Schar Fernandez/Clark Manquillo M.Longstaff Hayden Shelvey Ritchie, Murphy Wilson Carroll.Got to bring Elliot Anderson into the reckoning
Subs Anderson, Lascelles,, Almiron, Gayle, and well the rest are a lottery.
Perhaps time to cut our losses on the big money buys Joelinton and Almiron and put the money towards Josh King and Soumare with Delli Alli or Lingard as loanees. Must win against Sheff Utd or we are back fighting for our lives. Doing nothing in the window is not an option

Yet another piece of clickbait garbage
The idea of news is simple, it implies something of interest that is NEW
That piece of litter simply says De Marco is working on a case (that we already knew about) – but it uses 1000 words to relay that information.

Comment #71Must sack Bruce the Clueless if he doesn’t field a side that beats Sheff Utd on Tuesday.
Cashless must protect his “investment” by spending wisely and if that means cutting losses by off loading expensive buys then so be it.
The Cashless/Clueless pairing is certainly not acceptable!
Andy Carroll may be past his best but him and Wilson up top are the best option AC won 80/90 % of the headers against Arsenal and just needs someone to profit from the second balls. He is also invaluable at set pieces to our defence. Can also hold a ball up for midfield support. I’ll now wait for the critics to respond but would say as things stand he’s the best option and his enthusiasm rubs off on the others.

Comment #79SITC – Everything seems to be a statistic these days .
Fact – Arsenal have won 24 of their past 25 FA Cup third-round ties, whereas … Newcastle have lost 11 of their past 12 FA Cup ties against Premiership opposition.
Counts for NOWT.
We must go to Bramhall Lane on Tuesday and win. Play an offensive line up and attack from the start.
Sadly Clueless won’t do that!

Comment #80Hard to tell who will be available for Tuesday.
Dummett and Carroll will likely be on the bench.
Gayle starts for me, hopefully with Wilson.
Matty Longstaff comes in and possibly Anderson starts.
So 532 with Anderson playing in a no.10 role
Darlow
Manquillo
Schar
Lascelles
Fernandez
Lewis
Hayden
M. Longstaff
Anderson
Wilson
Gayle
