Bruce Confirms Reason For Magpie’s Early Exit At Arsenal

Steve Bruce made quite a few changes to his team in the defeat at Arsenal yesterday, 7 to be exact. He had hinted prior to the match that he would shake up the team with so many players in need of a game.

Jamaal Lascelles returned after his struggles with the after-effects of Covid. The captain hadn’t played since the defeat to Chelsea in November. Bruce included him in the starting eleven, however, Jamaal only lasted until halftime before being replaced by Matt Ritchie.

Thankfully, it was just fatigue that forced Lascelles off early. That is to be expected after what he’s been through. Bruce spoke a little about Jamaal after the match saying the following per the club’s Twitter account:

“He came off because of fatigue. With all the problems we’ve got, we left a few at home, and hopefully, they’ll be ready for Tuesday and we can freshen up the team.”

Bruce could name only seven on the bench as both Callum Wilson and Jonjo Shelvey were sent home as a precaution. Some of the Magpies who didn’t make the trip were Fede Fernandez, Fabian Schar, and Javier Manquillo. Both Fernandez and Schar were due for a rest as was Matty Longstaff, who made the bench but didn’t feature.

In addition, there were three players ruled out in Jamal Lewis, Ryan Fraser, and Allan Saint-Maximin. It’ll be at least a few weeks before Saint-Maximin is able to return as he’s yet to get back to training after suffering from long Covid.

Ryan Fraser is back in group training after his groin problem while Jamal Lewis is still nursing a minor knee injury. We’ll see how they get on this week and if they can at least be ready for Monday’s return to face Arsenal as Tuesday’s match at Sheffield may be too soon.

    Regarding Joelinton

Think it has less to do with the #9 and all to do with the price tag he came with.

Whether or not it was really £40M doesn’t matter, that is the number attached to him. He has the pressure on him of being the most expensive player purchased by Newcastle and the manager also has the pressure to select and start him because of that. Players bought for that kind of money should be star players ready to win matches. As West Ham is trying with selling Haller, it is better to move the player on than waiting too long for the player to come good. You take a loss but get the bad air out of the club.

If Bruce is not playing him due to pressure from the top then I suggest that Joelinton must be one of those players who plays really well, amazing even, during training – when there’s no real pressure to get results and it is a friendly environment.

We can see in the matches that he will put in a good effort, and this will always look good in training, but in training he’s not up against first team players who will really get stuck in as they would in a match. Maybe he also fights to stay on his feet more in training than in a real match as he is not trying to con the ref by falling over at every contact or physical battle.

It’s also amazing how he gets credit in matches for winning aerial duels. Yes, he often gets his head on the ball but we rarely win or keep possession as a result.

I don’t have the answers but that is my theory.

Wasn’t there a statement saying Maximin hadn’t suffered from long covid? It was said two of our players suffered bad, one was Schar. Bruce is milking this. he’s pretty much had his full strength team out bar lascelles and ASM who he dropped before covid, and he has chosen not to rotate. If they were that fatigued why didnt he rotate? simple solution. you’d think someone as simple as bruce would be to see that.

    Tsunki,
Try putting one in your basket then entering your post code. Worst Web site in the world. They haven’t got them for sale and should be taken off their website.

Silly me – I thought you were talking about our exit from the cup, which I assumed was down to the fact that they scored 2 and we scored none.
