Pundit Predicts Misery For Newcastle At Bramall Lane

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson has made his predictions for this round of Premier League fixtures. He is predicting Newcastle to lose 2-1 at Sheffield United.

Here is some of Lawro’s reasoning behind his prediction:

Newcastle are on a poor run themselves right now, taking only two points from their past six games and going out of the FA Cup at Arsenal.

I know Newcastle don’t do all-out attack whoever they play but surely they won’t just sit back at Bramall Lane? I wouldn’t understand that, because this is obviously a very winnable game for them too.

I don’t think there will be much in it, but I am going with the Blades here. They are bound to break their duck in the league at some stage, and at least they will have a bit of confidence after the weekend.

I know people will say it was ‘only’ Bristol Rovers they beat, but a win’s a win when you are in a situation like they are.

Lawrenson seems convinced that Sheffield’s FA Cup win over the weekend will spur them on to pick up their first win in the league. The Blades have a tough three matches after Tuesday with games against Tottenham, Manchester United, and Manchester City to close out January.

Bruce spoke about his determination to play higher up the pitch after the FA Cup loss to Arsenal. There was a genuine commitment to do that on Saturday. So hopefully, we won’t see Newcastle sit back at Bramall Lane tomorrow.

Newcastle have scored just once in the past five matches. While Sheffield got three goals (though one was a Bristol Rovers own goal) over the weekend, they’ve managed just 8 in the league all season. So this could be a low scoring affair tomorrow.

Needless to say a defeat at Sheffield United would be disastrous. I don’t even want to entertain that notion right now. So let’s hope Newcastle can put in a performance and keep Sheffield in the realm of the winless after tomorrow’s match.

I’m always good at missing the bus….

We’re all adults so we shouldn’t need someone on here to remind us, I do feel like it would help though. If Neil or Ed can’t, then designating a moderator would be a good idea. It would have to be someone pretty neutral though, otherwise there’d always be some posters claiming bias etc.

As our previous defence coach he must be able to see that the comment “but surely they won’t just sit back at Bramall Lane” is wrong. Its all Brucie knows – ‘defend lump and repeat’

We would sit back against Marine

    The Wife,

The irony in missing the bus because you wait all day for one post and then two come along like busses haha

Oh by the way, I get my first dose of the vaccine on Wednesday morning, so i’ll let you know if I get any weird side effects like an extra arm or something!

If we draw against Sheffield it’s not a terrible thing to have a point. But it’s a pretty shoddy indicator of what’s to come in the following fixtures isn’t it?

Points wise i’d agree with you, 3 points is better for Sheffield. For us though I think it’s the knock on effect if we don’t win, confidence and morale already low will be even worse and we never seem to have a good response. So would be even worse performances going forward as a result.

    Must disagree.

A draw is a disaster as it isnt a straight shoot out between us or Sheff U to go down, so its not like “phew at least they didnt close on us”…as there are 2 other teams in the bottom 3 who CAN close on us if we fail to win.

all a draw does it reduce the chances of us finishing bottom which is irrelevant. not finishing 3rd from bottom is what matters and a draw for us can still end up with the gap between us and the team in 18th closing.

If anyone was prepared to act as a blog moderator they’d have to be on here 24/7 and read every comment.

Who would really be prepared to do that, not me for starters! 🙂

Great to hear we have no interest in a cut price Josh King deal, why on earth would we want him? Can’t score goals for love or money but Bruce is seeking another defender to go with the 8 already on the books, all our resources tied up in a deal for Phil Jones then I take it.???

Thanks Neil and The Wife. As a long time poster, some 10 years or so now, I appreciate your comments and hope some of those posters see sense.

I do engage in non-football chat now and then but there is nothing wrong with it in moderation as long as it is not to the detriment of other posters or taking over the whole blog. Take the night club for example, harmless chat between fans of the same club.

    And finally….

I would think it is someone who has nothing better to do than be on line 24/7, so anyone working is out of the reckoning straight away.
Not many about who would qualify for the job, we already have a moderator anyway , as a few on here already know.

    The Wife,
He gets a very easy ride here from the pundits. Apparently he’s a really nice bloke, was an excellent player in a very successful team and comes from an era when it was the normal for the players to meet in the bar after the game and have a good drink together, I think he’s popular on the charity golf events etc. So basically all the pundits are his mates and just love telling us what a great job he’s doing, I just thought they might be a bit more critical Stateside with the pundits, especially the American ones with them not likely to bump in to him any time soon.

I can`t believe Sheff U are clear favourites for the game considering their form and their position, and then i thought, hang on, maybe it`s not just us fans who think we are shite, the bookies know it too.
If ever there is a chance of me potentially having to replace my tv after watching a match, it will be this game, jeez i hope we turn up.

Think we need a Mod Squad of around 3 or 4 to cover most times.

Also a “report” button to highlight any posts that are deemed unacceptable is needed too, so the Mods dont have to trawl through pages and pages, they can just look at whichever posts have been flagged and judge if they are ok or not.

or just /neil and the wife start banning people for a month at a time. will hopefully encourage old posters to return if they see a more peaceful blog and entice new posters to join in.

Id love to know how many fans see the Blog posts on twitter and click to see what its like and just close it straight away when they read the drama on here. So many news fans we lose as a result of the verbal jousting here.

WLToon, I haven’t watched a single Sheff Utd game this season so simply can’t comment on who should be favourites. One thing I do know is we are extremely poor and lucky to be on the points total we are. Bookies also still strongly favouring home teams despite the gap closing since games went behind closed doors.

36 more covid positives in the PL in the last week. Down from the previous week.

    4th to 7th – 27
    8th-10th – 9.

so looks like if the players stop dicking about and going to parties etc then it can be brought back under control. Though it is early to assume so tbh.

A moderator would not necessarily need to be on 24/7 – just a regular who could read back – or perhaps 2 or 3 for fairness.
They could moderate retrospectively as required.

Maybe get shot of the hearts feature and replace it with a yellow and red card system so you would know if you had been moderated.

We could ask Kevin Vegan for some pointers as he has a vast experience in this area.
