Bruce Rules Out Additions ‘At The Top End Of The Pitch’

Since the transfer window opened, Steve Bruce has downplayed expectations for January. Though he has admitted that targets have been identified and if he feels they improve the squad he’ll try his best to bring one or two in.

Newcastle have been linked with a few domestic loans. There were recent reports that a deal in principle has been agreed for Manchester United fullback Brandon Williams.

However, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah looking to be headed to Bayer Leverkusen, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may opt to keep the 20-year-old behind as cover.

That is what talkSPORT’s Alex Crook thinks may happen. This is what Crook said about the knock-on effect of Fosu-Mensah leaving Old Trafford this month:

“One of those affected could be Brandon Williams, the United defender who is wanted by both Southampton and Newcastle.

“I wonder if United would be so willing to let him go now that Fosu-Mensah is set to depart because that would leave them a bit short of cover at full-back.

Crook’s comments come off the back of an interview Steve Bruce did on talkSPORT earlier. It was during this interview that Bruce reiterated his stance for this transfer window. He again said a couple of targets are ‘bubbling away’ but he’ll only bring in a player that improves the squad.

This was Bruce’s familiar answer when asked about this window:

“We’ll see. If there’s somebody there who can help us, we’re always actively looking and one or two things are bubbling away.

“But I cannot see it being a busy transfer window for everybody.”

Bruce did, however, add something new during this interview in that he has ruled out moves for any attackers this month. When asked about the reported interest in Bournemouth forward Josh King, Bruce was adamant that he was not a target while also revealing his lack of concern about the ‘top end of the pitch’.

Here is Bruce’s response when asked about Josh King:

“No, No. At the top end of the pitch, we’ve invested a lot of money, so no, we’re okay in that area.”

If Bruce can be taken at his word, it looks like he’ll concentrate on the defense and midfield for this window. This could also mean that Elliot Anderson, who made his debut over the weekend, could be called upon more in the second half of this season.

I would take anyone with a bit of tactical nous.

Cant believe we are hoping that the manager with the second lowest win percentage in premier league history is going to keep us up.

Well said my friend, even if Bruce was sacked he will only be replaced with another yes man dinosaur of the scrapheap that no other club is interested in, its just rinse and repeat, the clowns running the circus dont know any other way.

I think we need about 35 points to be safe ,lower than usual, lucky for us, but i`m not sure we can achieve that with this nugget running the show.
Maybe one of the dummies in Fenwicks window would be a better option tbh

Sheffield Utd’s last 7 home league games (most recent first)
    Sheffield Utd 0 Everton 1
Sheffield Utd 2 Man Utd 3
    Sheffield Utd 1 Leicester 2
Sheffield Utd 0 West Ham 1
Sheffield Utd 0 Man City 1
    Sheffield Utd 1 Fulham 1
    Sheffield Utd 0 Leeds 1
anyone who thinks this is an easy match because Sheffield Utd only have 2 points is mistaken. last season Sheffield Utd were winning by 1 goal this season they losing by 1 goal. fine margins.

Aye it`s all so predictable with Ashley, never any big surprises which gets the fans off their feet with anticipation or excitement.
The club remind me of his tat sports shop. I don`t step foot in the place, and won`t ever until he has gone.
I`m itching to go back but won`t give him a penny of my money on principles mate.

I don’t see SB being adventurous / experimental in a must not lose match, so the line-ups we’ve been touting are unlikely to materialise.

Come on Steve, prove us wrong and go for it! 7-0 to the Toon!!!

Wor B I understand where your coming from, a big part of the problem with Bruce is he is to conservative and negative, in my opinion he doesn`t send the team out to try and actually win any matches, it more a case of not getting beat if that makes sense, i think this is one of the most important matches of the season tomorrow night, and it could shape the rest of the season going forward.
