Bruce Unlikely To Recall In-Form Defender From Loan This Month

Yesterday, Steve Bruce revealed that strengthening the attack was not a priority during this transfer window. He was asked about links with Bournemouth’s Josh King when he said he said he felt Newcastle were ‘okay in that area’.

While Newcastle have been linked with a few forwards, the majority of our reported targets seem to be at the back of the pitch. Though it now seems increasingly likely that a couple of them, Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori and Man United’s Brandon Williams, will not be allowed to leave this month.

Over the summer, Newcastle were in talks with Arsenal over a year-long loan for defender Rob Holding. In fact, some reported that the deal was practically all tied up. However, Mikel Arteta pulled the plug and kept Holding at the Emirates.

That decision has turned out well for the 25-year-old as he’s already matched last season’s total of 18 appearances. However, this time he’s a regular who starts the majority of Arsenal’s matches.

Newcastle were unable to find another recruit after Holding’s deal fell apart. We’ve struggled at times keeping our backline intact with so many injuries and also the Covid outbreak impacting a lot of our defenders.

With all this in mind, Steve Bruce was asked yesterday about Florian Lejeune, who is playing very well on loan with Alaves. This is what Bruce said about a possible recall for the Frenchman as published in The Chronicle:

“The purpose of it was to go and play. He’s playing week in, week out so I’m led to believe.

“Of course, we’re kept updated on him. It would be nice for Shola, our loans manager, to go and see him but with the problems…the feedback is he’s doing OK.

“He’s fit and he’s healthy, which is the most important thing, so I think it’s important that the kid still plays games.”

Lejeune has impressed in Spain so far. He is a key member of the Alaves squad already making 16 starts this year. He’s closing in on surpassing the 22 total appearances he’s had the previous two injury-riddled seasons on Tyneside.

The important thing, as Bruce states, is that Florian continues to play after two serious knee injuries ruled him out for much of the last two years. He also seems well suited to the Spanish game and has vast experience in La Liga with his time at Eibar.

So it may be best to not interrupt Lejeune’s loan spell by bringing him back to Newcastle this month. He’ll have one year remaining on his contract this summer and his future can be sorted out after what will hopefully be a full season of football with Alaves.

    magicmac54,
He’s been out of his depth at PL level for a long long time now, I’m not even sure if he has Warnock type abilities at Championship level anymore. It’s an old argument that these type of managers aren’t given chances at a big club because they’re not foreign, it’s not, it’s because they’re not good enough. He inherited a team on the up, fair enough he got dealt a bad hand losing Rondon and Perez and getting Carroll and Jo, but a situation he seemed delighted to accept at the time. In 18 months and £100M he’s turned a well drilled organised team in to a shambles that has no direction or style of play, getting made up each week depending on the last result. How many gloated that he had more points than Rafa, of course he did, he took over a fully functioning team, if he’d taken over from, Pardew, Carver or Mclaren we’d have been relegated last season and would be struggling in the championship right now.

I was a little surprised as well. From what i’ve been told by colleagues and what i’ve heard, I think it’s because the main goal is to give the first jab to as much of the population as possible, rather than use stock to give out 2 jabs to a smaller size of the population. That’s the thinking I believe anyway.

    Magicmac

He sounds worse each time he speaks to the media, like a bumbling idiot who doesn’t even know what’s happening with his own players! I’m sick of his ‘hope’ comments and his ridiculous comments about Lejeune and the Darlow and Dubravka situation is embarrassing! On paper we should beat Sheffield, with Bruce managing us…..it’s total mystery every game!

About Lejeune; ” He’s playing week in, week out so I’m led to believe.”

Comments like that just go with his all demeanor of not knowing what he’s doing. Whether it’s just the way he speaks or he genuinely is unsure, it’s either unprofessional sounding or unprofessional practices.

I think we can only really have genuine hope when Bein is 100% back on in Saudi. At the moment it isn’t yet fully but everything crossed that it will be soon. Ironically I don’t think human rights will come into it at all and the Fifa guy has no problem with state run clubs, ie city and PSG. Now just need the PL to show a bit of backbone and not be dictated to by the big 6.

Those comments from Bruce about Lejuene pretty much sum him up can guarantee he’s not watched a single game of his would he even know he was majestic against Barca and Madrid?

Instead we will end up with Phil Jones who is woeful he’s a bit like Bruce living off previous glory picking up a wage for hee haw

If the results tonight go well and we score a hatful of goals we could be above Wolves with a game in hand on them.
Alternative scenario is that we end up below Burnley.

Only one option fro Bruce to plan for, the other puts us and him very deeply in the do do.

Rotonda, I know people won’t be happy for me mentioning it either. But we still need to know 100% that PIF are still interested too. It’s all definitely good positive noises and signs but we’re still relying on PIF still being at the table. I personally believe they are, but as far as i’m aware there’s still nothing out there to definitely prove that they are at the table still.

Not trying to be a Debbie downer, as I do believe it’s positive noises right now and that the deal is still on to be done.

One of the important factors in the Saudi/Qatari deal is that Qatar (BEIN sports) in particular are dropping ALL legal cases against Saudis and Saudi companies and I suppose this includes the appeal at the WTO about illegal practices and piracy.

With all this legal stuff gone from the background, a more positive way forward is possible.

Note, I’m choosing my words with care 😉

I guess you covered all boxes there in your post about Bruce, do you have any theory Jail why there is such a shortage of quality British or Irish managers these days? Most of us can remember a time when there were a lot of brilliant British or Irish managers in the game. PS i hope you get good news today and you get the all clear to start back to work fella.

Adam, I believe the word from Saudi is that, they are still interested but won’t submit an application again, until they get a “guarantee” of a pass. So, without a guarantee they’re still out of the picture. Take whatever you want from that, I suppose it depends if you’re a glass half full or half empty sort of person?

Bruce hints that he may pick Dubravka over Darlow for tonights game. If he does this its shows he has no man management skills at all. No way can he drop Darlow the way he is performing. Dubs will understand not being picked.
If Darlow is dropped it sends completely the wrong message to all fringe players. The same goes if he picks Lascelles over Schar, Fernandez and Clarke tonight. Totally wrong decision unless one of the 3 are genuinely injured.
I’ve got no idea what the colour of the Sky is in Bruce’s world but it’s certainly not the same colour as ours ….aaaghh

It’s a huge development in all this and it will be fully reinstated over time and that will pocket the PL and beiN more money in the tune of around 250M.

Making some kind of peace with Qatar was the only way to start making things move forward and that’s been done now with what’s transpired over the last couple of weeks.

cleveleysbob, yeah i’ve seen people say similar and articles, journalists pieces, twitter etc etc say they are definitely still at the table. Just as far as i’m aware there’s nothing to suggest they’re waiting for approval or still interested from any like official source or anything. I think it’s just because i’m used to takeovers failing and disappointment with the club over the years, that i’ll always be slightly skeptical haha I do think it’ll happen though and just have to be patient and wait it out, all being done secretly and quietly etc

I agree about the situation of goalkeepers he should keep Dalek in rather than Dr Robotnik up until the moment he makes a mistake. 😉

However providing he is fully fit I would have no hesitation putting Lascelles back In for schar at least we definitely need someone who can actually defend set pieces in the air we come unstuck several.times with the missing man on the spot.

Magic, I know you asked Jail, not me, but if you’ll allow me my short observation on this, I think the problem goes back to Alex Ferguson. He, with a well drilled largely home grown squad + astute “star buys” from overseas did a brilliant job winning almost everything imaginable over a 20+ year spell. This led to the mistaken belief that all U.K. coaches knew what they were doing with a lot getting jobs all over the place and mostly failing. There were a couple of stand out exceptions in SBR and Roy Hodgson who did really well overseas and brought that expertise back to the UK, but they were the exception, the rest just got their reputations on the back of Sir Alex’s shirt tale and unfortunately some are still hanging around including the knacker we are stuck with currently.

Saudis haven’t gone anywhere they are quietly waiting to return.

Since the Saudis released the statement of pulling out they have been approached from various clubs around Europe asking for investment but they have all been turned away with PIF saying we are only interested in Newcastle United.

When PIF released the statement it was because of the constant dragging of there names through the mud and the fact it was never going to be approved under those circumstances.

They pulled out and said to the consortium it’s down to you now! Come back to us when you have a guaranteed seal of approval and we will return.

PIF and the Saudis have took great admiration from this fanbase and the way we fought back and showed our love for the deal and how much we wanted the Saudi involvement.

As soon as there is a clear path they will be back

Adam, I think I read somewhere, either from Ashley’s camp or the consortium, that they’d been in touch with PIF and that was their response, “in if guaranteed a pass”. I think the demand from the PL that Saudi Arabia be listed as an owner, also has to go away, but I expect the legal challenges to blow that issue out of the water.

In reference to the debate about Lejuene, he is a cultured and classy footballer, and would be an assist to any team who want to play attractive football and play out from the back, but thats not the type of footballer Bruce would be interested in as we all know, it would have to be an old school plodder like Phil Jones, i guess if Philippe Albert was still playing for us he would be looking to push him out the door also.

I would say that Bruce’s comments about Lejeune show that the lad is out of the picture, his disinterest shows he had no intention of tracking his progress or re-integrating hm into the squad. And drafting beaker from the Muppets to fill in as standby? That’s what we are now is it?

I think a lot of the problems with British coaches is development from a young age we focus a lot on physical attributes rather than tactics or technique and this shows with a lot of the managers like Bruce and Big Sam

A lot of foreign coaches come from leagues where they have had not a lot of money so have to develop players and style! Also a lot of them have to play young players or players picked for them which is something the likes of Bruce etc all moan at

Look at the likes Pochettino, Klopp etc all chuck youngsters in at the deep end but properly prepare them and have done even when they were in charge of smaller clubs

I’m not debating any of that mate, but where has that information come from? Has it comes from reliable sources or is it twitter talk and journalists? Not saying it’s right or wrong just interested in where all that information is coming from. As it’s extremely positive if it’s from good sources.

    Cleveleysbob

If it was from Ashleys camp then I wouldn’t debate that at all as that’d be good enough for me! It makes perfect sense so the Saudis don’t risk losing face again; only going back when it’s a guarantee. Fingers crossed the whole ‘Saudi being a director’ thing is something being worked on in the legal case. I imagine it’s something that can be ironed out relatively quickly by both parties, providing the premier league are willing to though.

Jail if you havent seen an improvement recently in terms of how we played v Liverpool and Arsenal then i’m not going to bother . We didnt set anything on fire far up the pitch, but we have improved a little. Thats whats keeping me going anyway. A defeat and its 100% relegation struggle, although I think it is already.
