It took a controversial handball decision on Fede Fernandez for Sheffield to get their breakthrough. However, the hosts were easily the better team tonight. Newcastle surged late but their pathetic first 70 minutes have doomed them to an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at Bramall Lane.
Steve Bruce made no changes after a woeful first half in which Newcastle went down to 10 men. The hosts continued their dominance to start the second half forcing an excellent save from Karl Darlow on a point-blank effort by Jayden Bogle.
After 25 minutes into the second half, the Blades, despite having so much possession, didn’t create anything of note other than the Bogle shot. Newcastle were pinned back but Sheffield struggled to generate anything of real quality.
The hosts found their breakthrough when Fernandez was ruled to have handled the ball after a tussle with Billie Sharp in the box. The referee initially waved away calls from the Sheffield players but awarded the penalty after taking a look at it. Sharp took and converted the penalty.
Steve Bruce made a succession of attacking changes after the goal. First Matt Ritchie came on for a hobbled Paul Dummett while Andy Carroll replaced Fernandez soon after. The combination of the goal and substitutions gave Newcastle more impetus to get forward.
In the 83rd minute, Callum Wilson got another chance. He won the ball up the pitch and laid it off to Jeff Hendrick. The midfielder swung in a cross that Wilson headed straight to Aaron Ramsdale. Jacob Murphy replaced DeAndre Yedlin after the chance.
Ten men Newcastle pushed for an equalizer and the Blades looked far from comfortable but it was way too little too late. Sheffield have won their first match of this Premier League campaign while Newcastle are on a stretch of 8 winless matches in all competitions.

No plan A, no plan B etc
We are going down unless Fulham and West Brom have very bad second half of seasons.
We have some good players but we have the worst coach in this league

Comment #4Prior to the game I thought the calls for the manager to be sacked, if we were defeated, over the top and beyond expectations. But now I am fully on board.

Comment #6Bruce has to go after this, simple as that end of story. he has to be man enough to hold his hands up and say look I’m simply not good enough to manage Newcastle and walk away like a man with at least a tiny bit of pride, bring shearer in as a manager, he is miles better than anything on offer at the minute, he would get this team playing proper attacking football and with his status the players would surely look up to him. anything is better than this clueless buffoon and his negative depressing defensive tactics, the players clearly don’t want no part of it.

Comment #7Ron . Everyone is sick of his excuses and Ashley should see this and sack him to protect his investment and indeed the takeover if there is one. Saudis won’t want the club if we are relegated . They’ll probably turn their attention to Leeds Utd – a progressive club?

Comment #14I think every poster would of taken a defeat, even a hammering tonight if it guaranteed Bruce`s sacking, but it won`t, and that is what makes tonight`s result even worse, knowing that useless twat will still be in charge indefinitely.

Comment #15Carver football was far superior to this.
Just put two fekking strikers on and let the lads organise themselves on the pitch, they’d do a better job.

Comment #17WE have very few strengths at the moment but the last 20 mins showed we can be assertive , aggressive and offensive with Carroll partnering Wilson and Ritchie and Murphy wide providing the ammunition. WE must play to these strengths. Newcastle supporters way;d much rather go down 4-3 with a good team performance rather than punished with this crap served up every week.

Comment #20We still have players like atsu, dumett, yedlin, murphy, and a load of other players that we have had for years in the championship lingering about in our club who are simply not good enough, we have way too many bang average british players, longstaff is not good enough, shevley isnt good enough, hayden isnt good enough, hendrick, all slow, defensive and poor players, the midfield needs to go, we havent had a proper midfielder since cabaye ffs

Comment #22I have a theory:
There is a takeover looming – but it is dependent on us staying in the premier league – Bruce has been told – STAY UP AT ALL COSTS.
So, dunderheed decides the best possible route is play ultra safe, don’t concede and try to snatch a goal when we can.
Same plan for every game – until safety is guaranteed.
BUT, he can’t even do that.
Can anyone think of another reason to set up and play this way???

Comment #23You would think even now Ashley must be considering the removal of Bruce!?!?
Look at how we were set up from the go it was shocking and I can’t stand this standoffish attitude the players have whether coached or not, get stuck in ffs.
The most worrying thing looking at the players under Bruce is they are playing with fear every single one of them except for Wilson, Darlow, Fedes, Schar and Hayden the rest of them look like terrified YTS kids.
The great Mr Kesuke Miyagi once said:
“Cannot, must not! It’s ok lose to opponent! Must not lose to fear!”
“You stay focused. Daniel-san, you best karate still inside you! Now time let out!”

Comment #34If Ashley thins Bruce can keep this club up by setting up and playing like this then he too is deluded. If two players who cost £60M + cant even get a game as sub against the bottom team then they should be sold even at a loss and reinvest the money raised in someone who really wants to play for this club at half the cost who can perform twice as well. WHU have done this with Haller . They grasped the nettle. If Gayle isn’t considered good enough sell him. If we can get say £15/20 M for Sean Longstaff on hope value then sell him. We have 4 good keepers now. Perhaps we consider selling Dubravka or Darlow and raise say another £15/20M by doing so. We must get a proven striker and a strong midfielder like Soumare.
Speculate to accumulate Mr Ashley if you really want to sell your club. AND start tomorrow by sacking the Clueless Dinosaur.
That’s me done now till we have new owners and a new manager

Comment #35Even Rafa didn’t set us up that defensive, despite having nowhere near the attacking options that Bruce has, and against a team like that.
How do you pick Hendrick in the 11, when you’ve got any one of Almiron, Joel and Murphy to play instead. Incredible
541, at Sheff Utd, with Paul Dummett at LWB after so long out and playing 120 minutes at Arsenal 3 days ago, when he could have started Ritchie. Wow!
Ashley isn’t competent, probably isn’t even really paying attention, so it won’t happen, but Bruce should certainly go for that performance, and for the previous 18 months leading up to it. Should never have been near shouting distance of the job in the first place.
Ashley will be the death of the club, if this takeover doesn’t happen.

I honestly don`t think Ashley has a clue whether we are playing shite or not tbh,
He probably has even less of a clue than Bruce, not his fault by the way, he does not profess to be a football coach, just a tight fisted multi billionaire who hasn`t got a foggy about the game.
I agree with a couple of posters on here who think we will have to be a couple of points above the drop zone before Ashley changes things, sad i know mate.

Set up like Mice vs Men, thats Bruce for you against the worst side in the league ..we have just taking over the mantel, its now Newcastle United thanks to one useless Steve Bruce.
Ashley should not let this manager back in the ground or anywhere near the training ground .
Ashley should now not make the same mistake he made with McClaren and let it drag on any longer ..
Bruce should be sacked in the morning if not tonight .He’s absolutely useless
Sack him now Ashley and avoid a Wally with the Brolly repeat.
