Toothless Newcastle Fall 1-0 To Sheffield At Bramall Lane

It took a controversial handball decision on Fede Fernandez for Sheffield to get their breakthrough. However, the hosts were easily the better team tonight. Newcastle surged late but their pathetic first 70 minutes have doomed them to an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at Bramall Lane.

Steve Bruce made no changes after a woeful first half in which Newcastle went down to 10 men. The hosts continued their dominance to start the second half forcing an excellent save from Karl Darlow on a point-blank effort by Jayden Bogle.

After 25 minutes into the second half, the Blades, despite having so much possession, didn’t create anything of note other than the Bogle shot. Newcastle were pinned back but Sheffield struggled to generate anything of real quality.

The hosts found their breakthrough when Fernandez was ruled to have handled the ball after a tussle with Billie Sharp in the box. The referee initially waved away calls from the Sheffield players but awarded the penalty after taking a look at it. Sharp took and converted the penalty.

Steve Bruce made a succession of attacking changes after the goal. First Matt Ritchie came on for a hobbled Paul Dummett while Andy Carroll replaced Fernandez soon after. The combination of the goal and substitutions gave Newcastle more impetus to get forward.

In the 83rd minute, Callum Wilson got another chance. He won the ball up the pitch and laid it off to Jeff Hendrick. The midfielder swung in a cross that Wilson headed straight to Aaron Ramsdale. Jacob Murphy replaced DeAndre Yedlin after the chance.

Ten men Newcastle pushed for an equalizer and the Blades looked far from comfortable but it was way too little too late. Sheffield have won their first match of this Premier League campaign while Newcastle are on a stretch of 8 winless matches in all competitions.

Well Ashley, Barnes & Bishop. How much has your £4m investment in our coach cost NUFC?

I wonder exactly how much anyone will offer to buy a team that is increasingly looking like dropping into the Championship. Certainly NOT £350m. I’ll have pint of whatever Mr Ashley’s drinking if he feels that is a fair valuation.

If, Mr Ashley, you are banking on pocketing a few million from the failed takeover you might be left with egg on your face and a hefty legal bill to boot.

How long will it take for the pension funds etc that invest in Sports Direct to look at how you run a company wholly owned by yourself. The facts do not make for pleasant reading. Relegated twice and mis-managed by a series of cronies of Mr Ashley.

When the crowds are eventually allowed to re-enter football grounds how many will come back to St James’ Park. Next season we will probably drop to less than 30k and a lot less if we are relegated. I can’t see there being a rush to buy season tickets for the 2021-22 season can you.

So can you imagine the best scenario where NUFC survive for another season to fight off the drop again in front of a half empty stadium. What a message that will send out about the quality that Mr Ashley provides.

If relegated, and with no guarantee of ever returning to the Premiership, TV revenues will plummet with a much reduced source of advertising too.

Would a professional investor be happy to allow Ashley, Barnes and Bishop control over their money given that they seem totally inept at running Mr Ashley’s own company NUFC.

Neil please give the true fans on here the opportunity to give their opinion that Bruce should be sacked. I bet the poll would show about 99.9 % in favour.
Ashley and Co need to get the message loud and clear.
And there should be no compensation paid to someone doing a sh1te job. Wouldn’t happen in any other industry.
We should also be banned from televised matches as we are failing to provide entertainment to viewers

There are simply no excuses anymore.
This is corporate negligence at every level.
    The owner is a disgrace.
    The Manager incompetent.
    The coaches of little use.
    The training facilities outdated.

If Ashley bought Bruce in to hold the Fort until the take over happened and a new manager was appointed then the time is up.

Bruce May try to excuse the result with the sending off, but if he had not set the team up so defensively then Fraser would not consequently have been at such risk. After all, although his match fitness contributed, both cards came from trying to steal the ball and relieve the amount of opposition possession. A team of battling championship players who have fallen victim to every other team they have faced since before the beginning of this season. What happened to the higher pressing Steve?
Why does he not believe in the capability of his own players above those of other teams?

    CH,

I`m not saying Ashley will allow Bruce to take us down mate, i mean he won`t sack Bruce until the other teams below us are breathing down ours necks, but i suppose by that time it will be too late, so your initial comment is right.

The man wants out and is in the process of trying to ge the club sold and if this was any other normal season with no takeover looming I’d totally agree and we have seen as much with the McLaren era.

With all that in mind surely the thought is crossing his mind as Bruce is damaging his investment every single day he continues to be here. He isn’t a stupid man far from it and he is a ruthless individual so for me he has to be considering it before the damage has been done and there’s no going back and no 340M in Ashley’s back pocket.

Perhaps the best option would be to clear the lot out and start again afresh . I think Cashley is hanging his hat on this happening with a takeover. But is the takeover ever going to happen. Not if we are relegated so MA act now and be decisive for once instead of gambling with the clubs future.

i tweeted Mehrdad and Jamie and asked that if the takeover is in any way reliant on us being a PL team next season then please get in touch with Mike and move Bruce on. As if he stays its a 50/50 call on whether we survive or not.

Think i need to stop drinking and tweeting….

The football is garbage. Most of the players are garbage. The manager is garbage. The owner is worse than garbage. This club is a shell which is dead from the neck up. It self imploded years ago and the pieces are tasked with avoiding relegation at any cost. The game tonight was typical. It matters not whether we play Liverpool or Darlington. We put 11 in the box and defend for 90 minutes hoping for a 1 nil or nil nil. Totally embarrassing and very boring. Its the antithesis of football.
We are a club floating around the plughole every year until we fall down the hole.
    It is no longer watchable.
Bruce is so lucky there are no fans. Big Sams treatment would be tame.

Apart from anything else he’s just an enthusiasm black hole.

Don’t know what’s worse at times like this, the dour, defeatist soul that is Bruce, or the chipper, smirking, oblivious McCalren.

I’ll go with the former because it’s just so pervasively negative and rubs off on to everything. McCalren’s smarm at least inspired anger, Bruce is just life draining.

If tonight’s performance and outcome against a team chasing there first win all season doesn’t speak absolute volumes to the hierarchy above that something needs to change.

Now if Bruce set up and we went for it and first half was unlucky and then we had Fraser sent off and had the same second half I’d be saying now “bit unlucky with the sending off” but there was no attacking intent from the whistle and I was trying hard to see what Bruce tactics was other than setting up not to get beat.

    Cummmmmon Ashley see footin sense

Mund I was rather hoping that the Blades would score in the opening 10 minutes. I was really looking forward to seeing his Plan B. As his only answer seems to be bringing on Big Andy for last 15/20 minutes.
Surely any fool could see the value of playing Big Andy with Wilson together against both Arsenal and the Foxes. Indeed playing him at Brentford would perhaps have seen use in the Semi Final.
I know AC is past his sell by date but is probably one of our best options as things stand, No one likes hoof ball but its more acceptable than the garbage presently served up

Fraser couldn’t wait to get in the bath.

Schar tried hard to follow him off.

    Wilson stranded and chasing shadows

    Midfielders outnumbered so retreat

5 at the back told to not get forward

How long before they start to get niggles and tight muscles

Playing so crap, when we get relegated what other teams would want them.

Someone needs to stand up and say NO, I won’t play like this.

Logically thinking in my eyes there’s no other option. I know he can’t go and sign up a manager for the next 3 years but surely there is an interim manager who could come in place for the short term.

Anything is better than Bruce as he has proved nothing but being totally inept of his position.

It’s Ashley tho isn’t it and he doesn’t do logic he does what he wants but his thinking in this matter has to be different with all circumstances considered
