It took a controversial handball decision on Fede Fernandez for Sheffield to get their breakthrough. However, the hosts were easily the better team tonight. Newcastle surged late but their pathetic first 70 minutes have doomed them to an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at Bramall Lane.
Steve Bruce made no changes after a woeful first half in which Newcastle went down to 10 men. The hosts continued their dominance to start the second half forcing an excellent save from Karl Darlow on a point-blank effort by Jayden Bogle.
After 25 minutes into the second half, the Blades, despite having so much possession, didn’t create anything of note other than the Bogle shot. Newcastle were pinned back but Sheffield struggled to generate anything of real quality.
The hosts found their breakthrough when Fernandez was ruled to have handled the ball after a tussle with Billie Sharp in the box. The referee initially waved away calls from the Sheffield players but awarded the penalty after taking a look at it. Sharp took and converted the penalty.
Steve Bruce made a succession of attacking changes after the goal. First Matt Ritchie came on for a hobbled Paul Dummett while Andy Carroll replaced Fernandez soon after. The combination of the goal and substitutions gave Newcastle more impetus to get forward.
In the 83rd minute, Callum Wilson got another chance. He won the ball up the pitch and laid it off to Jeff Hendrick. The midfielder swung in a cross that Wilson headed straight to Aaron Ramsdale. Jacob Murphy replaced DeAndre Yedlin after the chance.
Ten men Newcastle pushed for an equalizer and the Blades looked far from comfortable but it was way too little too late. Sheffield have won their first match of this Premier League campaign while Newcastle are on a stretch of 8 winless matches in all competitions.

Comment #167Agree that Bruce is out of his depth and taking the team backwards and down.
But no point in sacking him while Ashley still there. No decent manager with any ambition would sign up.
This whole mess, for the past 14 years, is due to poor decision making. We couldn’t even get the deal of the century done. Wouldn’t be surprised for the takeover to be given the green light only for us to go down and the Saudis go elsewhere. Cursed club?

Comment #169I can’t believe Bruce is still saying he won’t walk. He knows how much the fans hate him, can see the players aren’t playing for him and this is apparently someone who supports and loves the club? You’re here for the money and won’t leave because you want a pay off. It’s pathetic and you’ve lost all and any respect and credibility by agreeing to come under Ashley in the first place and now not standing aside so the club can be rescued. If he’s a fan, he’s the worst fan I have ever seen in my life.

Comment #171Bruce says he never walks away from a challenge. What a porkie….he’s resigned from at least 3 clubs. If fans were allowed in I think he may well have gone by now.

We don’t even offer a counter threat now though and almost all of those teams will out run us.
They all have goals and form in them.

Comment #175Tbf to our esteemed leader I think he brought Bruce in purely as a caretaker thinking takeover would go through, hence the 1 year contract, but he’s gonna have to do summick now cos if there’s any chance of it being resurrected Bruce is going all out to derail it.

Comment #177Watching the Liverpool, Arsenal cup game and to a degree the Leicester game
We looked a much better team pressing higher up and trying to attack.
Thought the corner had been turned
Could our idiot of a manager not see that and play the same way
Seems not

Comment #180Think Bruce seen the press and how they were bigging it up as a chance for Sheffield Utd first prem win after their result in cup, and he bottled it sent out a team he thought wouldn’t get beat, just to save himself from the flack if they did beat us. Well guess what Bruceless you cowardly Cnut it backfired get oot of toon.

Comment #184Lol,I’m laughing all the way to the bank on this one,it was a knocking bet!Who else but Sports Direct FC would give these fcukers their first 3 points of the season.Anyone that thought differently is simple. We will beat the drop by a couple of points this season imo but if we don’t get sold at the end of this shitfest of a season it’s the championship for sure next year.To be honest I’d like us to spend about five years in the lower leagues.Thank fcuk we haven’t got 52000 sheep attending the parasites horror show at the minute because that would be ridiculous. The whole thing is a disgrace and embarrassment from top to bottom.

Just read bruces after match comments, just shows how clueless he is, he says he set up to try and play more attacking football with ryan further and sean further up the pitch where they could be a goal threat.
He also vows to NEVER walk away as he claims to have to much respect for the game to do that ?????
Bruce needs to go asap

but it was not a good spectacle.
Been posting on here a good few years and have never seen the levels of anger from bloggers like tonight. Brucie really is not a PL manager. Bloody Shearer told him not to take the job – but he did – idiot.

Comment #197I’m now no longer convinced we can finish the season on 34 points as I calculated a couple of weeks ago. Looks like 31 or so now. It’s anybody’s guess if that would keep us above the bottom 3. Not looking good at all.
