This is the team Steve Bruce has named for this evening’s match at Sheffield United. Bruce has made six changes from the defeat at Arsenal over the weekend.
Newcastle Starting XI: Darlow, Yedlin, Fernandez (C), Schar, Clark, Dummett, Hayden, S. Longstaff, Hendrick, Fraser, Wilson
Subs: Dubravka, M. Longstaff, Ritchie, Elliot Anderson, Murphy, Almiron, Carroll, Joelinton, Gayle
As expected Bruce has given recalls to a few of the players he rested at Arsenal in Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar, and DeAndre Yedlin. However, we are a little disappointed that Matty Longstaff has been dropped.
Bruce has also kept Karl Darlow as his first choice keeper while Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser make their returns to the team. Both Jonjo Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles didn’t make the squad today with their fitness issues.
This is the starting eleven Blades boss Chris Wilder has settled on.
Sheffield Starting XI: Ramsdale, Bogle, Basham, Egan, Ampadu, Osborn, Lundstram, Norwood, Fleck, McGoldrick, Burke
Well, we should learn a lot about the state of Newcastle United after this one. Sheffield have yet to win in the league after their historically poor start to this season. As luck would have it, they may have picked up some confidence with an FA Cup win at Bristol Rovers just a few days ago.
However, Newcastle need a result with all three points being the obvious aim. We’ve not won in seven matches in all competitions. Hopefully, the Magpies are the ones who get the elusive win tonight.

That leaves five or six million people who don’t really watch us thinking that we were this shite under Rafa.

Comment #42Wow could we be anymore defensive!?
I always say that Bruce ends his games with a much more attacking team usually after he has lost the plot but this is beyond a joke
Its Sheffield United!!!

“A loss today is unthinkable. Shef utd will fancy as do basically every team who play against us.
I predict a hard fought 1-1 draw.”
Fortunately Dennis Twice has restored some balance…

Comment #47I mean in theory Fraser and Wilson could be a good strike force
Longstaff as the no 10 behind them with Yedlin and Dummett on the overlap hemming them in
Lets see how it works out

Comment #48The wife- thanks for your prompt reply – will check out your link later on and I suspect challenge your views. Too busy getting prepared for the game and sorting out some beer at the minute.
You may be aware I am having similar medical issues to Ed and have spent loads of time recently in hospitals in Northumberland. Now in the middle of chemo treatment. Had long discussions with the medical elite, professors, consultants, registrars who are so intelligent I can believe how intelligent these people are. from home grown medicos to people imported from the middle east and far east – we have world leaders here now. I value what they say as opposed to what Tom dick or Harry on the street might believe. Anyway later. Match beckons.

Comment #61Advanced far too easily up our left side there because of Fraser.
Glad he’s in though. A bit of quality in the final third. Should have Murphy on for either Longstaff or Hendrick though.

Comment #63Us in a nutshell.. free-kick with defenders all up, and we play a stupid short routine and lose the ball.. Makes your blood pressure go up.
Feels inevitable we gonna concede.

Comment #80Why are we playing with only two attacking players on the pitch in a disjointed formation?
Matty and Murphy should be on at least for Hendrick and Sean. One winger on the pitch and one ST against a team with no wins in the league.
Bruce handed them all the encouragement they could want. Bit of a mess out there at the moment.
